Scott Rasmussen finds 4% of the electorate is likely to be Never Trumpers supporting Biden, a percentage which reversed would result in a tie.  Further evidence that Biden's center-left "I'm Trump's opposite" strategy, that has cost him some on the fringe of the African-American/Latino vote, has picked up more than enough white college, seniors, women to win this.

Cool concept.  ST:TNG was very good at character-driven episodes that delved deep into the past of said character.  Sliders quite frankly was terrible at it.  Which is why reading your idea, my initial thought was, well that wouldn't work on Sliders!  But in reality it's because we just never got to see it.  I think Tracy really wanted to do it with Arturo's jealousy of Quinn but JRD fought it.  A deep dive like that is exactly what the premise for Counterpart, which I really enjoyed.  It's definitely something that a "modern" Sliders iteration would likely go into, especially since acting against green screens is so common now.  I have a feeling the production team back then weren't keen on doing it much, so the doubles were usually off screen.

I feel like all of these "models" behave as if I were to say it's going to snow in Syracuse, NY, in the last week of January.  The other thing is, they ALL have been wrong on occasion.  This campaign features an incumbent well under water on favorability, approval, with independents, I could go on and on.  There's a pandemic, his approval on handling it is horrendous.  Have these models faced this kind of hurricane before?  There's no way, maybe during the Depression, which none of these models go back to usually.

PS: On tonight's town hall's, Trump mainly argued with the host, while Biden kind of gave run on answers.  I did think Biden hit on a number of good ones, such as Trump's use of the Justice Dept as his personal law firm.  Most notable from Trump's was his babbling refusal to disavow Q-Anon.

PS 2: I saw a clip from a debate tonight in Iowa, for the Senate seat.  Joni Ernst apparently doesn't know the current commodity prices on crops!!!  The Dem Theresa Greenfield got them correct.  This is Iowa after all.

Current estimates are that we may see 150-160 million votes, well above the 137 million that voted in 2016.  Enthusiasm from likely voters is through the roof.  Meanwhile the Supreme Court once again stopped census takers, and the GOP proceeds with its cabal to pack the federal courts.  If those estimates remain, turnout would easily exceed 60% perhaps as high as 65%.  60% has not occurred since Kennedy/Johnson, while 65% hasn't happened since the days of Teddy Roosevelt!  I cannot possible see how that benefits Republicans nationally, as they traditionally get trounced in high turnout elections.  In fact, the % of likely voters who say that the outcome of the election is very important is higher than it's been in decades.

As for the election night, it's likely many states like Wisconsin or Pennsylvania will not be close to done counting.  However, Arizona, Ohio, Florida, Texas probably will.  Even if they are super close or Trump narrowly prevails in say Ohio, you can make demographic/exit poll comparisons to the slower states.

Besides the fly on Pence's head, the story was women felt Harris won 70/30, while men were split.  It's really telling and you can easily see how those numbers are very very close to the national polls seeing a split with men, and historic gap between the two with females.

I saw the Don Jr. thing the other day.  The children are scared of Daddy Donny, they won't do squat.  Eric Trump was forced to testify the other day in NYC.  It's the legal and financial fallout which Don Jr. is most afraid of.  Ivanka doesn't care because Kushner has his own money, she's taken care of.

Well the only shot Romney had in 2012 was if Obama was swept away IN that hurricane!  One, obviously me LOL, could argue the ghost of RBG has haunted Trump and most of his White house and campaign staff.  2016 if any one thing put him over the top it was Jim Comey's October non-surprise surprise that doomed Hillary.

As for this moment, look, it's been 7 months we've been dealing with COVID-19.  Public perception on who they trust (anybody but Trump), and measures they wish to be taken (the opposite of Trump's) have not changed.  We're talking 60-70% agreement which includes a decent slice of Republicans.  Is his recovery going to suddenly convince tens of millions of people that he was RIGHT all along?  I cannot fathom that, as TF you say, they done screwed up, again.

To use another hurricane analogy, Trump is the old couple who refused to evacuate when the state told them to, and the National Guard had to go in and rescue them.  Religious or not, rich or poor, black or white, people recognize a dummy when they see one.  Trump would have to return to the campaign trail, and behave.  They'd have to conduct at least one more debate, where he'd have to behave.  Can he do this?  Moreover, will he WANT to do this?  I think no.

Get Out the Vote, canvassing, voter registration drives, ehhhhhh, does it make that much of a difference?  I've listened/read prominent political strategists with eons of experience who don't think it does.  At least, not in a Presidential election that is competitive, which is by virtue a "high turnout" election.  So you're not going to really be able to turnout much more than the "high."  The theories go that people who regularly vote in high turnout elections are going to continue to do so, and don't really need to be found in person.  Those who regularly don't vote, still won't.  Several battleground states allow same day registration anyway, for new voters.

On Trump's thinking, he doesn't think he CAN win over new voters.  Like I said, he is pretty clear he's probably going to lose, so like you said, he's trying to "change the electorate" through suppression, litigation, and legislation.  Good luck with that Don.

PS: Hope Hicks has coronavirus, and Trump may have to quarantine for several days, meaning no rallies!

Well turning off voters is not "great" for Biden though it's disastrous for Trump if the polls are 1/2 accurate.  As I said many times, Trump really has nothing but disgust for most of America, always has.  Given it won't vote for him, he's REALLY disgusted!  That's without even bringing up Putin.  There's been a steady stream of former Trump White House (particularly National Security and health) officials announcing their support of Biden.

He's being outspent everywhere, really laughably at this point.  Republican Senate candidates are flailing, many now being outraised and spent by formerly unknown Dems big time.  One has to imagine the October stampede from the GOP to confirm Barrett will only pour fuel on the fire.  This happens every election, people have mostly made their minds up, and what you get is this period in October where they largely decide to vote.  In 2016, the hesitation was on Trump, was he a legitimate choice?  James Comey largely helped them to say yes.  This time around, all the doubt is on Trump, people are incredibly sick of his antics.  I only hope that it results in this mass disavowing of Trump, and the polls wind up being trounced by 3-4 points all over the place by this anti-Trump fever.

He's the most recognizable brand in the world right now.  All he'd need to do is say the word, and investors would line up to pay for it.  He'd be able to attract and afford whatever talent he wanted, and people would tune in.  I don't know if he'd get the entire Fox News audience, but he'd get a huge chunk of it.  Every MAGA would tune in whether Trump was on or not.  Cable companies would pay up the wazoo to get it in their lineup.

A Trump Network would probably be the most profitable thing that Trump ever did.

Well as I said, the guys who own networks like OANN or Newsmax are billionaires already, so they can afford to cut Trump a big check.  There's the thing though, again, he's a phony.  His fans love how he bashes reporters for 15 minutes. or his soundbites from the rallies.  That won't sustain a TV network.  He'll put even his ardent supporters to sleep, this wouldn't be like the Apprentice where ol' Don would appear for 10 minutes, mouth a bunch of lines written for him, and say "you're fired!"  People love the myth of Trump, the actual orange babbling dufus, not quite as much.

Biden couldn't say more than two words to Trump before Trump shouted him down and Biden doesn't have the Elizabeth Warren severity to put Trump in his place. Biden could have spoken about it when addressing the camera, a maneuver that confused and baffled Trump into silence because he doesn't seem particularly aware of the viewers at home at this point -- but Biden chose not to attack Trump while talking to the people, instead trying to connect with them and leave Trump out of the conversation. Had he criticized Trump while looking into the camera, Trump would have interrupted him further.

Biden is just not a confrontational speaker in a debate. His gift is emotional connection. And he wouldn't have been able to criticize Trump for more than a few syllables at a time and he won't unless future debates can mute a speaker who doesn't respect the rules by shutting down their audio feed while filtering out their voice in real time.

Biden was unprepared for being heckled nonstop, I think we all were.  My advice to him is to make a HUGE point in then next debate that he's the ONLY candidate who trusts the American institutions of democracy.  Even more importantly, only he trusts the American voter.  Trump does not, he wishes to derail democracy and lives in fear of the voter.

He's not dropping out.  He's petrified about January 21, 2021.  He'll be served up to the Manhattan DA and New York Attorney General on tax evasion and other fraudulent Trump Org business dealings.  Possibly even the Southern District federal prosecutors (if he's not pardoned) on the Stormy Daniels fraud.  He'll be open to the creditors who shall be calling his 400 million dollars in loans, for which he has no way to pay.  Bankruptcy, selling off assets, etc., is all in his future.  He and his family are screwed when he loses.

I've read that Fox News has been quite anxious about Trump losing simply because they don't want him to start a competing network.  The reality is that won't happen.  Trump has no money to do that.  At best maybe he would be given a platform on OANN, though their reach is small and production quality is laughable.

The mistake during the debate was not bringing up the taxes AND Trump's pathetically bad business record.  That NYT article was the worst thing that's likely happened to him as President.  He is exponentially insecure, especially when to comes to his finances, and those revelations absolutely igniting Trump.  May well have been a big reason he was a lunatic last night.  The second thing he HATES is being called dumb, because he is.  When Biden said his approach to COVID had to be smarter, Trump did a literal "WHAT DID YOU CALL ME??"  Then proceeded to have a meltdown about being questioned if he's smart.  If I'm Biden, I spend the next 2 debates questioning his business losses and intelligence.

568

(3,504 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

This happens every cycle, a Republican candidate does poorly so his supporters blame the moderator.  The money is raised is important, but I'm not sure where they can place it right yet.  Though the polling is not of the highest quality, Biden is now TIED with Trump in South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Iowa, and even ALASKA!!!  ALASKA.  Senate races are tied in many of those states now.  This is the type of disastrous sinking of the GOP ticket which Republicans feared in 2016, but didn't materialize, but did sink them in 2008.  Five weeks to go, but Trump could not have done his or his party any worse last night short of chasing after Biden/Wallace with projectile vomit.

569

Trump's strategy at this point is to stop voting.  Delay the mail, suppress the vote via GOP Governors, mail ballots are fraud, not counting after Nov. 3rd.  And now last night.  He does not want people to vote.  This is what autocrats do, the ones who then claim they won a "vote" by 90 points, because the populace is too afraid to vote.  All we can hope is that he is in fact defeated, because I truly cannot imagine what this maniac will do if given another 4 years.

I'm going to attempt a sane commentary on the complete INSANE event I witnessed tonight....Trump is (if you give any credit to polling) trailing. Did he help his case with undecided voters? I cannot see how. I felt many of his comebacks were actually pretty good (though again they are dubious), but that's not what viewers will take away. They'll take away only that this was a complete fiasco of chaos. Trump didn't allow the viewer to let what he was saying sink in, before railing on something else, arguing with Chris Wallace. If I had to grade it, Trump "won" on COVID response, and law and order, but lost the 2nd half on white supremacy, ballots, and frankly Biden whacked him good on the Hunter attacks. Al Gore took a dive in polls for being a weirdo then a robot, now Trump will be lampooned as a lunatic. The reality is the country lost. Completely a mess, and now people are saying cancel future debates.

PS: If there was a drug test pre-debate, Trump would have surely lost because he must have taken a suitcase of speed.

Well like I said, the oddball write-offs may seem innocuous but plenty of people have been hit with big time fines/bills from the IRS for them.  Will that happen with him in office is another story.

To me the bigger story is the fact that his accountants didn't simply write-off these massive losses for tax evasion.  Nope, Trump had in fact LOST hundreds of millions of dollars on incredibly moronic investments.  He spent 100's of millions on golf courses to feed his ego, but they don't make much money.  He has hundreds of millions in loans that are coming due within the next few years.  How is this idiot paying them?  From what?  His businesses lose money like a waterfall.

While he's still President, it's unlikely the IRS, or more importantly, his creditors will come after him.  And then you see why he's willing to lie, cheat, and steal this election.

572

(3,504 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Trump's supporters are irrelevant, this kind of story might sway some people on the fence, but it's really more of the same.  The irony is that Trump's use of Net Operating Loss, depreciation, and other means to lower his tax burden are not unique to him.  Most of the 1% do this, avoiding staggering $$$ of income taxes that the rest of us have to pay for.  There's not really anything illegal done, although he signed two bills (his 2018 tax cut and the CARES act earlier this year) which allow people like him to further use NOL to skip taxes basically indefinitely.  The system is a joke.

The source of illegality would be if Trump inflated his assets to obtain loans, which is another story.  However, while many probably laughed at details such as writing off Ivanka's makeup artist or Trump's hair stylist, those meager write-offs are highly questionable, and often what investigators can hammer you on for tax evasion.

Lastly, the best part of the story is that it's egg on Trump's face, which will drive him totally up the wall.  He flips out when his manhood, wealth, and intelligence are mocked.

573

(3,504 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

I'd rather not think about a looming street war that might be on the horizon.  Trump's campaign cannot legally procure state legislatures to "ignore" the popular vote and draft electors as they see fit.  The Constitution DID allow this, but EVERY state and D.C. have laws on the books to prohibit such a farce.  They would have to draft new legislation and get the governors to sign it, and good luck on any of that happening.  Specifically Pennsylvania, no shot.  Trump's plan is to declare victory on November 3, and then start screaming about throwing out ballots that haven't been counted yet.  Again, good luck with that initiative because there's very few elected officials (even GOP) who are anxious to get into that fight.

575

(3,504 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

I'm just not sure that Democrats have the support internally to upend the system.  Adding justices, I do not see that as incredibly likely.  Passing D.C. statehood to expand the Senate I'd assume may be on the table though.

Anyhow, Murkowski and Collins have said no confirmation vote before the election.  Presuming if there is a vote, and those two vote against, which is not assured, you'd need two more Senators to say the same thing and Mitch is stopped.  The putrid hypocrisy from Lindsay Graham or Marco Rubio on this topic is obvious, having defended the election year BS re:Merrick Garland 4 years ago.

I'm not betting on anything at this point.  I think both Republican Senators and Trump are going to question whether McConnell's rush job will have significant effects on November 3rd.  I do feel that if they do not have the confirmation before it, the amount of backlash during a lame duck may well be even worse.

They list all the maps out.  290 would include Biden winning Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, all states he is ahead on average above the margin of error.  That does not include Florida, North Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, George, or Texas, all of which Trump leads or trails WITHIN the margin of error.  Nor are most of the maps giving those states to Trump, most of them are simply "toss ups" right now.

That means if the polls stand, and wind up being accurate within 2-3 points off the RCP average, as they have been in every election besides 2016, Trump will lose and lose "bigly."  In fact, you could argue that Biden's margins are actually very close to the polling from 2012 in which his former boss won easily.  Obama's polling was actually underestimated in the RCP averages that year in several states.

So again, unless the polls are once again, grotesquely inaccurate like 2016, Trump will lose.  That's without even talking about his laughably bad approval rating (-double digits), unfavorables (-double digits), and Biden's favorables (+5).

581

The national polls are exactly where they were pre-COVID, with Biden up at least 7 points, which is a deficit well beyond the Trump "silent majority" and would make even an electoral college win for Don statistically impossible.  This does not of course rule out rampant cheating on the Trump campaign's part, though honestly how much affect could that have?

Trump spoke to Woodward because he was annoyed by his last book.  Remember Trump is OBSESSED with mainstream press, and how they write/talk about him.  He reads newspapers constantly, to see exactly what they write, he is morbidly insecure.  He decided, since he IS a stable genius, that if he were allowed to have input on a new book, it would come out far better.  He truly believed he would simply talk, Bob would listen, and write it all down verbatim.  Which as we know, is exactly what happened, except that, Trump was the one doing the talking!  He just simply does not believe what he says is wrong, even though, as the tapes prove, Trump knows he is lying.  It disproves the trope that DJT is so stupid that he fouls up at every opportunity.  No, in fact, he has purposely lied and misled from the pulpit every chance he's had.

The ABC Town Hall, which at the end of the day, I doubt many will actually have seen, since anything Trump does has shitty ratings.  That being said, his backers often praise him for appearing before "critics" only to be made a fool of.  They then retreat to the Fox News mini-universe where nothing is wrong and all is good.  His campaign agreed with the suggestion that he do a FOUR HOUR podcast debate with Biden hosted by Joe Rogan.  Can anyone imagine the nonsense he'd spew for that long?

I'm going to veer off for just a moment into Informant territory.  How weird is it that there was an officer-involved shooting in a swing state the week of the Republican National Convention?  Seems like just about perfect timing for Trump.  I don't think Trump's team is capable of keeping that a secret, but it certainly helps the GOP at the perfect time in just about the perfect place.  Hmm.

It's random, but the violence from the legit radical left is nationwide right now.  They're just invading city after city and burning shit down.  It all works in Trump's favor though because he and the right-wing will harp on it for months.  Portland is out of control.  You have supposedly BLM protestors demanding people's homes, restaurants, and mobbing people who have nothing to do with any of this.  Yes it's isolated and of course blown out of proportion by social media, but it all works to Trump's "law and order" (for anyone but his family) narrative.

Like the Kayne West campagin, I'm sure the skinhead Spencer endorsement was another offshoot of the Trump "win at all costs" campaign.

So you slide into San Francisco, and find people sitting inside bubbles:

Of course, a pandemic is a logical conclusion for such a thought, but what if it’s something else?  What if the idea were a way to examine the more metaphorical idea of “living in a bubble”?

We’re largely there now, and all sides are guilty of it.  Most surround themselves with only people who agree with them; they only watch and read news they agree with; some even only frequent establishments that will be populated by people who think like they do.

“Bubble world” would take segregation to its extreme.  Segregation of thought.  Segregation of ideas.  And the Sliders would fall into hot water for making the mistake of simply talking to somebody.

Kinda has a New Gods For Old feel to it.

DeJoy is not going to budge.  Some union workers are reinstalling sorting machines anyway, while others cannot because they've found critical parts damaged or missing!

What were thoughts on the DNC?  I felt they did a good job highlighting real people and having them speak rather than just the pols we don't want to hear from.  Additionally, Biden and Harris presented strong, focused speeches that blew a cannon ball through the Trump claim that Joe is an invalid in adult diapers.

Quick thoughts from this stupid DC Fan day or whatever.....

Synder Cut JL - This is like when you play the same video game over, make different choices, and get new cutscenes, right?

The Batman - As I often bickered with Info over, just too dark, sadistic, graphic, violent, etc. for me.  I truly don't understand the need for these films.  Leave the gore for horror and violence for war movies.

Wonder Woman 84 - Glad to see it's still got humor in it.  The film though will rise/fall based on the villainous performance of Kristin Wiig, and that is probably too tall an order.  She's just not "menacing."

Suicide Squad Roll Call - What was the point, had no footage?

And so have to be honest, at least WW84 looks like fun, and The Suicide Squad is a combat adventure.  The other two, blehhhhh, I mean, they're joyless.

The lawsuits and Congressional actions are still on the table, as none of them are taking DeJoy's word for it.

Further, the bipartisan Senate panel finally released the Russia investigation report, which found that Donald Trump's underling Roger Stone DID conspire with Julian Assange/Wikileaks to release the stolen (by Russia) John Podesta emails the night of the release of the Access Hollywood tape.  Trump lied about having nothing to do with this.

It also concluded that Paul Manafort was a counterintelligence threat who was working with a Russian handler of sorts.

Not sure what will come of it though if you recall Amb. Sondland in the Ukraine mess?  Like DeJoy, he was just a big Trump donor who was given a job like this as a result.  Like Sondland, I truly do not believe DeJoy has the stomach to defend Trump to the point of putting his own butt on the line.

I've finished the series.  Overall I was not a huge fan of season 7.  I think the story was mucky and disjointed, and honestly could have been told in 3 or 4 episodes rather than 13.  The finale was I would say a very satisfying conclusion, very much in the way that long series used to be concluded in the 90's.  It was a marvelous series that I shall miss dearly.

One number to keep in mind is black voter turnout, which was 5-6% higher for Obama than Kerry or Clinton, who both lost.  In Wisconsin in 2016, the turnout was like 20 points lower, which doomed Hillary.  So between Biden and Harris, you'd figure those voters will be voting, not to mention how badly Trump disgusts them.

And now this:

I’ll admit there’s a kind of mad genius to it, but the strong emphasis is on “mad”.  This will not stand; Congress and the courts can’t allow it and should not allow it.  This would make irrelevant our three branch system of government; we would truly have an authoritarian government if this is allowed.

There’s also the probability that companies will hoard the cash instead of letting employees keep it:

https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-p … ash-2020-8

The madness here is that it’s scorched earth.  Trump is going to turn both Democrats and Republicans in Congress against him.  Further, it’s madness to just do away with payroll taxes provided by the middle class.  How are Medicare and social security supposed to survive if you cut out a significant chunk of their revenue?  Granted - social security is going to fail anyway, but why accelerate it?  This just created a massive talking point for Democrats as they can tell the elderly that Trump is trying to take away their benefits by crashing the system; and they really won’t be lying about what he’s trying to do.

The only “genius” here is that Trump knows the orders will fail, and he just wants to be able to say he tried to help people and Congress stopped him.  Its cover for failure to make a deal.  It’s an attempt to turn a negative against him into a positive.  Will it work in his favor?  Odds are against it, in my opinion.  I think it will cause him more damage than good.

He's a grifter my man, the Sham-Wow guy, it's really that simple.  His plan is to divert billions from FEMA (with hurricane season coming) to pay for 75% of the $400 while BROKE states must pay 25% but he gave them no more aid.  His payroll tax shit is just plain putrid.  The Republicans against Trump are already preparing an ad blitz, where Trump ADMITTED he will eliminate that tax if re-elected.  That means he is FOR the abolition of Social Security!!!  Madness!

In other news, Joe Biden was out biking with secret service.  He wore a mask and no helmet (come on Joe), but another shot to the "he's too old" line from Trump, who would wipe out if he attempted to do the same.

This story takes the cake though....

White House aides reached out to South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem last year about the process of adding additional presidents to Mount Rushmore, the New York Times reported.  According to a person familiar who spoke with the Times, Noem then greeted Trump when he arrived in the state for his July Fourth celebrations at the monument with a four-foot replica of Mount Rushmore that included his face.  Noem has noted before Trump's "dream" to have his face on Mount Rushmore, the Coolidge-era sculpture that features the 60-foot-tall faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.  According to a 2018 interview with Noem, the two struck up a conversation about the sculpture in the Oval Office during their first meeting, where she initially thought he was joking. "I started laughing," she said. "He wasn't laughing, so he was totally serious."
