Agreed. I generally try not to compare the DC movies to Marvel movies, because they are so different that it's silly to compare. And you also have several decades of DC movies and shows with these characters, so that is a whole other layer to consider.

What I'm loving about the DC franchise so far is the lack of a formula. Each movie feels like it's own film, whereas the Marvel movies have taken the approach of fitting everything into one big picture. That has hurt Marvel more than helped, in my opinion. But again, they are doing what they do.

I am going to try to rewatch the DC movies this weekend. BvS especially. Then we can discuss with it fresh in our minds.

(1,098 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Maybe... but can you really say that the Marvel movies started getting better after The Avengers? Iron Man 3 was just bad. Thor 2 is a movie that I know I've seen, but usually can't remember. I guess you could say that Winter Soldier was okay, but Civil War was an incoherent mess. Really, if you took Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy and possibly Ant-Man out of the picture, the whole franchise would be a disaster. That's two and a half movies out of fourteen or fifteen, right?

I do expect people to like some of the DC movies more going forward. They'll probably not like Justice League (and if they do, they'll praise Joss for fixing the movie), but Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, Cyborg... there are so many flavors to choose from here, so I expect people to find something that the like in the bunch. I just hope that Warner Bros doesn't feel a need to dumb down the DC movies in order to please Marvel fans.

723

(1,098 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Probably.

I'm having a hard time with a lot of the reviews, because they talk about lack of coherent plots or characters in the other movies, which immediately makes the review useless.

Just tell me, does it have more to offer than the crap that Marvel's been putting out lately? Doctor Strange and Civil War were horrible.

724

(1,098 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

I'm looking forward to it. I find it funny to see people and ads going on about how it's certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Didn't we already decide not to pay attention to that site? I mean, the last Ghostbusters movie was certified fresh too! smile

No, I think that using Trumpisms when referencing Nazi-like organizations or evil alien invaders is sloppy writing. And I am baffled that 8 years of prime Obama material went completely unnoticed by these writers, but I don't actually expect them to hold their King to the same standards as an American President.

But I have fun, and these lines would be fine with me if they existed as weak spots in otherwise solid shows. But they don't.

See, I'm not really offended as much as I just think it's bad writing. To take subtle jabs at Trump that are hollow, trying to make him seem like some part of an extreme movement to take away rights and all of that... it just tells me that these writers get their news from Comedy Central and have no idea what they're actually talking about. There's no meaning behind it. There is no clever message. It's hollow, which is the problem that I've had with these shows since the start. They have no soul and no purpose.

Ugh. I was going to give AoS a chance this summer, but now I remember why I dropped the show. It's like watching a mouse on a wheel. Cute for a while, but it ultimately goes nowhere and gets boring. Then it craps all over the place and eats its young, because mice are disgusting.

727

(1,098 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Yeah, the sounds of people eating makes me want to shoot myself (I think this is an actual condition with a name, but I forget it), so I don't need more of that in a movie theater. smile

The reviews for WW have been great so far... but all of those reviews also go on about how the other DC movies sucked, so I can't really put much faith in those reviews. Wonder Woman doesn't have the baggage that Batman and Superman have with audiences, and she is an overall happier character, so maybe the movie just has a better chance of pleasing everyone.

Question: Should Power Girl appear on The Flash or Arrow?

The alien thing has already been addressed, right? Would it be cool to see an Earth-1 or 2 version of Kara show up, rather than havin Supergirl cross over whenever they want to use Melissa on the show?

The funny part is that a lot of men have purchased tickets to these women-only screenings, and it may be against the law in some states to keep them out based on gender. So this is more publicity than a realistic women-only screening.

Of course, the screenings are raising money for soulless, corrupt organizations, so the other side still gets to laugh too.

I wish them the best of luck with this strategy. It would have been funny if they'd scheduled some men-only screenings as a response, but this seem like doubling down on a political battle that nobody really asked them to fight.

All of their crap is overpriced, so I've never gone to their theaters anyway.

I really don't go to the theater much either. I used to go to some of the Marvel stuff, usually when one of my brothers was in town. But they're just not worth the time or money anymore. The DC movies have me excited enough to see them in the theaters though, and then I watch the longer versions five more times when they come out on blu-ray.

Sometimes I wonder if you even read what I type.

I'll make this bold, so it will catch your eye and maybe you'll actually read it... I don't care if they have a women-only screening.
Or a black only screening. Or a white only screening. Or a Black Lives Matter only screening. Or a white straight male only screening. I'm saying that it's bad for business, and works against what the film's creators are trying to accomplish in the first place.

You want to know the crazy truth about the world? Everyone suffers. Everyone is discriminated against. Everyone is judged the minute they walk through the door. Just look at your posts about me, making countless assumptions about what you think my life must be like, without actually knowing (or caring to know, really) any facts about the claims you're making. One might even call that... racial/gender profiling? Want to throw in my religion and sexual orientation, just to cover all of our bases? God, my life is easy. Ain't nobody ever had it easier than this guy right here.

Systemic and institutional mistreatment? Such as?

(should we move this to the political thread? Because I feel like we're about to start talking about police shootings, the wage gap and marriage equality. Also, I might press you a little bit on that whole "name one place that's just for white men" subject, because you totally avoided it)

734

(1,098 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Show me one place that's exclusively for white men. Seriously, one. Just one. And it has to be one that's actually accepted by society, because the KKK headquarters is obviously a different thing.

I'm so tired of this "white men get to do whatever they want and get away with it" crap, because it is crap. We're all supposed to play along with that narrative, just to make other people feel better about themselves, but it's getting old. That said, politically speaking, I fully support the theater's right to have a women only event. I think they should be able to hold whatever events they want, whether or not they offend whatever group they're excluding. Personally, I'm over this giant game of Offense Bingo that everyone is playing. It's reached a point where, in some cases, people are literally dying because people are afraid of offending the people who are murdering them. It's insane.

Sorry. Mini rant. It's been a long week.

Anyway, I wasn't talking about this subject in political terms. I was talking about it in business terms. When you start deliberately excluding groups from your business, for whatever reason, you run the risk of damaging your profits. This is exactly why we don't need laws demanding that bakeries make wedding cakes for gay couples. Because the gay couple will just go give another baker their money and give a bad review to the shop that wouldn't make their cake. That will potentially cost that bakery money in the long run, even from straight couples.

It's the circle of business life.

I don't know that I agree with that. Looking at the cast list right now, I see some actors who are more famous than others, but many that have been somewhere on my radar for quite some time. The actors that I knew of before this series are:

Jason Isaacs
Doug Jones
Sonequa Martin-Green
Anthony Rapp
Michelle Yeoh
Kenneth Mitchell
Rekha Sharma
Rainn Wilson
James Frain

I think that if I were to look at the Enterprise cast, the most well known actor there is Scott Bakula, and maybe some recurring characters who appeared on other Star Trek shows. With Voyager... I don't know that I'd ever heard of any of them before, though Robert Picardo had already been in a lot of stuff. Kate Mulgrew was well established by then too, but I'd not heard of her.

When it comes to theatrical actors, I don't place them on as high a pedestal as others do. I've seen a lot of stage actors who just can't make the transition to camera work. They're really two different talents. It's like calling someone a "writer", but obviously there would be a difference between a novelist and a lyricist. So the stage work doesn't really matter to me as much as previous screen credits.

736

(1,098 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Sigh. Alamo Drafthouse has scheduled a women-only screening of Wonder Woman. This is stupid on so many levels and for so many reasons.

We're trying to show that a female superhero can be as appealing as a male superhero for everyone, so making her "for women" kinda defeats the purpose.

Discrimination is going to be bad for business. Unless this becomes that theater's "thing". Women only, men only, white only, black only, etc. Maybe safe-zone screenings can be their schtick.

This is just one theater, and has nothing to do with the studio. I'm not saying that they shouldn't be allowed to do it, but it is a stupid move.

Sony is still involved with the new Spider-Man movie, right? Its made with Disney, but they're still the main studio, aren't they?

Anyway, Marvel has made billions off of half-assed movies and shows that are kinda-sorta connected, but not really. So it's probably not a big deal.

Riverdale is the first of my "catch up over the summer" shows. I'm two episodes in right now. It's funny, because I thought the show had been on all season, so I was expecting 22 or 23 episodes. It seems weird that the show only has 13. I feel like I've been seeing commercials for it for much longer than that.

I don't read the comics, so I don't know the characters. What I can say so far is that the show is pretty interesting. I like the dark vibe of the series, which you wouldn't expect from an Archie series. Since I don't read the comics, I don't know whether or not the show actually needed to be related to Archie. If the tone is dramatically different, couldn't they have just made it a whole new thing?

Right now, two episodes into the series, my biggest complaint is the fact that Archie is in a relationship with his teacher. I'm over this trope on TV. It was edgy on Dawson's Creek, but now it's on every show that's set in high school, and it's getting to a point where it seems an awful lot like we're accepting this sort of behavior. On Pretty Little Liars, it's played as a true romantic relationship, rather than a form of abuse. The whole thing is really disgusting to me. I'm sure that kids love watching this stuff and imagining how mature it all is, but it's not. And we shouldn't keep telling them that it is.

But as I said, I'm only two episodes in. For all I know, the show does this story properly and shows the teacher as being manipulative, and completely in the wrong here.

They both seemed to be working for Chase because he got to them first. There wasn't much detail on any of it.

I hope we get a good reason for why Black Siren is evil next year. Is this a Killer Frost situation, where she can be saved? Or was she evil before she ever got her powers?

Captain Boomerang's switch did make sense to me, because I was sitting there, wondering why he was working with Oliver in the first place. When he switched back to the bad side, I was like "Well... yeah."

Arrow finale -

Overall, I liked what they did with the episode. It was pretty much what the 100th episode should have been. It felt like the end of the series that we have been watching up to this point, so I'm curious to see if they take things in a different direction next season.

It would have been nice if they had gotten Caity Lotz to come back, but I guess that would have required a lot of explaining.

I'm glad that Malcolm is dead. I hope he stays that way. His character is just nonsense at this point.

I had a hard time understanding Evelyn, and even Black Siren. At one point, alt-Laurel seemed to feel something toward the people whose doubles she knew back home, but then she shifted back to being eeeeevil without much explanation. However, I did enjoy the battle between so many familiar characters on both sides. Nyssa vs Talia was cool. Slade coming back as an ally is awesome. I could see him becoming a member of Team Arrow, or at least coming in for the big events.

Olicity... gag.

The cliffhanger... Okay, this is a good place to discuss one problem with Adrian Chase. He was a good villain, don't get me wrong. I definitely think that he worked as the villain for this third season of the show, and closing out whatever chapter of Oliver's life they're now closing. However, there were times when he was a little too much of a McGuffin factory. He seemed like some supernatural force of evil that knew what Oliver was going to do, no matter how unusual it was. By always being one step ahead of Oliver, right up until the credits rolled, made Oliver look less capable than he really is. There was no way to explain some of the things that Adrian did.

So yeah, he was a good villain for Oliver to fight, and it's even worse because he actually won in the end. However, it was hard to believe in him as a character. He was more of a representation, or a supernatural creature of some sort.

Now that cliffhanger. They quite possibly just cut the budget of the show by a ton! But let's face it, most of those characters lived. I think Malcolm might really be dead (Malcolm and Crowley in one week... is it Christmas?) but Black Siren, Rene and Dinah will definitely be back, because they've been signed as regulars. Which means that everyone else probably lived too, unless they decide to kill off Slade or William's mother, just for the heck of it. So, how do they survive?

If I were Felicity, I'd probably have just found a way to contact Cisco and have him Vibe the whole team out of there, but that might be too simple.

Kinda makes you wonder why they didn't just kill him a couple of weeks ago though.

Seems like at least one death will stick. Mark Sheppard will not be returning as a series regular next season.

I like the actor, but this is long overdue. I am pretty sure that you could edit out 90% of his scenes without losing any plot over the past few years.

Misha Collins has suggested that Castiel has a future, but we don't know if that means that he will be a regular. Personally, I'd rather see Mary, Jodi or Claire promoted to series regular.

I know that Julian was there, because Barry shook his hand. I think Tracy might have been, but I can't really remember.

The thing to remember is the newspaper. The headline still mentions the Flash disappearing after a crisis, and it's clearly a picture of Barry. So, I don't think that this is that. Unless Barry goes into the future for this crisis, and his "disappearing" is just him going back home to the present. Still, it would mean that his going into the speed force wasn't a take on the comic book storyline where Wally becomes the Flash.

I have not been following Supergirl. Since there are so few other shows to watch, I was considering trying to catch up when it hits Netflix next week, but everything I read about it sounds so bad. I just don't think that I can. I might try to force my way through Agents of SHIELD, but we'll see how that goes.

Did they explain why they wouldn't just send Mon-El to one of the other Earths that Kara is now familiar with? It seems more logical than him flying away in a space ship, if they ever want to see each other.

Well, The Flash finale has aired...

You called it with HR dying, which is sad.

I am outraged that they got rid of Barry! This was obviously done because the studio didn't want two Barry Allen's at one time, so they got rid of him, just like Amanda Waller. We should start a petition! Wally is a bland character who can't carry the show!

I'm kidding, of course. We all know that Barry will be back... Right? The real question is, how does Wally have powers? If Savitar is wiped from the timeline, shouldn't his deeds be undone?

How do we think Barry will return? And do you think they will move on from Star Labs, or just fix it up? Will Caitlin ever come back to the group? With she take the cure and get her hair back to normal?

Deep Space Nine did it best, I think. Those stories are still very relevant, and I talk to people who saw completely different real-world parallels in the show. I can still watch that show without thinking that it's hilariously dated. Even the concept of sanctuary districts doesn't seem far fetched.

Off the top of my head, I haven't been happy with Trump's willingness to settle on a half-assed Obamacare repeal, just so he can say that he got it passed. I would rather see a longer process with a better result than a quick process that makes more of a mess.

Also, I didn't like the situation with the Turkish guards beating protesters in the US and thought that Trump should have stepped up and taken a firmer stand on that when it happened.

I think he has failed to pull his team together and communicate with his own people, which results in different people speaking without knowing all of the facts.

I'm sure there are other things, but I'm watching something while I type this, so my brain isn't all here.

Once the President decides to hand over information, it's no longer classified. He has the ability to declassify information if he wants. For example, if Obama wanted to share information about British nuclear weapons with the Russians... actually, he did do that. Which seems worse to me than Trump telling the Russians about an ISIS plot to put bombs in laptops.

Why are people so shocked and upset about this sort of thing, unless they haven't been paying attention until now?

Trump has done and said any number of things that I disagree with, but as far as I can tell from the evidence that we have, he hasn't broken any laws or done anything that justifies impeachment.

It's going to be weird to suddenly not have a million shows to watch. I'm going to have to learn how to knit or something. smile

If they do choose to go with social commentary, I hope they're smart about it. We have a lot of shows preaching at us right now. If Star Trek starts hitting me over the head with Black Lives Matter, I'm turning it off. However, if they want to have a nuanced exploration of racial tension and all that, it could be interesting.

Justice League was always supposed to be a different tone than BvS. BvS represents a low point for characters, and a lot of desperation. The end of that movie was about finding hope and purpose for Bruce.

I think a lot of people around the internet have been writing fanfic about some behind the scenes drama, and calling it reality. There have been stories about struggling and so many reshoots that the movie has essentially been remade twice, and none of these things have any foundation in reality.

Hey, Supernatural is over for the year. The Flash and Arrow have their finales this week. You know what this means?!

A bunch of free time that can be put toward watching BvS (the extended version) again!

Yeah, I think that the Men of Letters storyline felt more developed, and that resolution felt more fulfilling. The nephilim story felt half-baked and kinda useless from the start. The kid is the President's son, genetically speaking, but... does that matter? Why? It just seems like a story that's there because they needed something "supernatural" and this was just them going through the motions of doing that.

I do hope that he makes for a good villain. Maybe they can make him interesting by not making him eeeeevil from the start. Maybe we (and Sam and Dean) actually like him at first, but he slowly starts to make choices that turn out badly and becomes a threat. Possibly not even on purpose.

First, I want to say that this is incredibly sad news for the Snyder family. I can't even imagine what they must be going through, and I hope that I am never able to grasp that level of pain. It's truly horrible.

Second, to address the movie... as Snyder said, it's just a movie. I already see people making little comments here and there about the situation, and it's disgusting how people could use his pain as a way of trolling him.

I don't like Joss Whedon. I don't think that he fits with this franchise. I believe that it's beyond his abilities. I think that he is full of himself. However, I get why they chose him. Despite the spin that many articles are putting on this, Joss won't be "fixing" the movie or making it his own. He will be following a map that was created by Snyder, and will be shooting a few scenes that Snyder wanted added. This is still Snyder's movie. Joss Whedon was most likely chosen because he is already working with DC/Warner Bros. and has been through the process of discussing the overall franchise direction. They need a director quickly, to film a few scenes. There is hardly the time nor the cause to go through a lengthy interview process. Jenkins is probably focused on the release of Wonder Woman, Wan is filming Aquaman, and Whedon was available. He got this job because he was there, and that's fine.

If he does try to make this movie his own in some way, it will be the end of him. This is a job where he is essentially helping out during a hard time, not building his resume.

The happiest, maybe. If only because she is still alive. However, she is with Lucifer. How long does she last there?

I do wonder who exists and how, in that other world. Michael and Lucifer needed Sam and Dean in order to go through with their big apocalypse. So, what would their roles be on that other world? Still, I'm not sure that I want to be there long enough to find out.

I do think that Sam and Dean need to work endlessly to get Mary back though. The risk is no greater than when Sam was in the cage. It would be weird if they gave up. However, it doesn't necessarily need to happen in the premiere, since Samantha Smith isn't one of the leads.

There was a rumor a while back, suggesting that these might be some sort of ancient Klingon variant. If that's true, there may be hope. I won't be holding my breath though.

I will probably not watch the pilot right away. I'll just wait and binge the season during a free trial of the CBS thing.

756

(267 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Leaving Mary wouldn't make sense to me. I don't see how Sam or Dean would ever stop looking for a way to get her back, just like they've done for each other a bunch of times. She's family... And not Adam.

On top of that I don't get why they would bring her back, set her up, and then just get rid of her. She is a solid character who opens a lot of doors.

757

(267 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Still processing my thoughts since I just watched the final two episodes. Here's where I am so far...

Hour one -
I think they could have focused on the MoL story alone and made this the season finale. Having hunters assemble with Sam taking the leadership role was cool. Dean had some powerful scenes too. Overall, I think the Men of Letters story was strong and worked, but they need to learn the method by which Kripke worked within his budget. They try to go too big and fancy sometimes, like with the modern MoL base, and it ends up looking like a 1990's Sci-fi Channel set.
Solid hour.

Hour two -
Honestly, I could do without this whole arc. Lucifer shouldn't have come back. The baby story has been done already. The alternate world looked cheesy.
That said, the setup is really interesting. There is potential for a soft reboot now, since so many crutch characters are gone. I'm surprised that Rowena was killed off camera, but it worked.
I want these deaths to stick, but there were so many of them that it's all begging to be reset. Ideally, next season would have Sam and Dean find a way to save Mary, and then the show would move on. However, I worry that everything that happened in this episode will be a waste of time.

My brother suggested that Mary will interact with alternate versions of those dead characters next season, but I really hope that (like Hell and Purgatory) we don't spend very long in the alternate universe. Hell, I'd rather see Mary end up on the Flash than spend multiple episodes in that world.

Depending on how this goes, the episode was either a huge step forward, or a big waste of time.

Overall, it felt unpolished in parts. Some directing decisions were questionable. Not horrible, but this arc wasn't my favorite.

Right. But as for right now, we can't take possible comments, three times removed, and pretend that they're facts.

I'm not saying not to question. I'm not saying that I like, support or trust Trump. I'm just going on that wacky concept of innocent until proven guilty. Trump doesn't have to prove that he didn't do these things. Others have to prove that he did.

If this were an O'Keefe story, you'd be telling me how flimsy it all is, and you know it. You'd be demanding the unedited videos, and even once they were released, you'd be unwilling to accept evidence from a source that you don't trust. Where is that demand for evidence now? Every single one of the big stories that Project Veritas broke had more substantial evidence than this. The accused, on video, in their own words. So far, the only real first-hand account that we have of anything here is from Trump.

761

Reactions are out, and Wonder Woman seems to be well liked. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. On the one hand, people say the same about the Marvel movies which usually aren't great. And are they just saying this because they have to support the female superhero?

On the other hand, the movie looks legitimately good. It could just be that this character doesn't already have a dozen other films and series by which the audience will compare her. She could be benefiting from the "fresh" element that drives people to like the Marvel movies.

Either way, I can't wait to see the movie... Figuratively speaking. I will wait a little while to see it, because theaters full of annoying teenagers on summer break drive me nuts. When did parents stop teaching their kids basic theater etiquette?

It smells more like a poorly briefed staff to me. It's a big failure. Even a bunch of liars will try to tell the same lie most of the time. Just look at... Every other President. I think his staff was speaking without a clue, and Trump was speaking without a thought.

The link you posted was interesting, and raises a lot of questions. Unfortunately, those questions will never be answered, because we are reading someone's impression of a conversation that he had with an over-venting friend, during which he failed to attain some important facts. If true, this story implicates Comey (damn his stupid name for messing with my auto correct!) as much as Trump.

There are legitimate questions to ask, but we can start with the answer we want and work our way back from there.

And again, Comey is a weasel who blatantly and unapologetically thumbed his nose at his oath to uphold the law. We have to keep that fact in mind here. We aren't dealing with a saint versus a madman. We are talking about a corrupt sellout versus a madman.

763

(3,520 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

James O'Keefe didn't just tell someone about a portion of a video that he saw once. He releases videos. Some of them I find interesting. Some I do not. Again, it's not about putting me weight behind any person. I'm not a Sarah Palin fan. I think she did some good things early on, but she got a big head. I like her compared to McCain, but that's like saying that I prefer Trump to Clinton. It doesn't mean that I necessarily like either.

The fact is that we don't have a Comey memo. We don't even have a full telling of what's in that memo, if such a memo exists. We have someone else's interpretation of a fragment of a retelling about an event that Comey apparently didn't see as a big deal... if it happened at all. Therefore, I can't take that half-baked concept of a memo and consider it evidence. I consider what we have and weigh it accordingly. As I said, I think that Trump's team isn't working well together, but that doesn't make anything he's done illegal. Did he give the Russians information? Maybe. Was that illegal? No. He's the President. It's only a scandal because it's Trump.

As endearing as it is that you find it to be your responsibility to assign me some easy-to-digest ideology that you can quickly dismiss, your assessment of what you think I believe is not an accurate representation of what I actually believe. I think Trump is scum and has probably broken a million laws in his career as a businessman. I think that if he's breaking laws now, odds are, he's smart enough to not strong-arm the FBI director who is taking notes during their conversation, and who is leading an investigation into corruption. I think that if that happened, Comey probably would have reported it, because not doing so is a crime.

When did it become a bad thing to actually want to see evidence? There were any number of accusations and rumors surrounding Obama that I didn't get on board with, because those reports lacked actual evidence. What you guys are doing is taking a rumor about something that might exist, but for which we have no proof, and holding it up as though it's a solid piece of the "get Trump" campaign.

To be clear, I don't want Trump as President. I would love for him to be replaced by someone who was more capable of doing the job. If an investigation comes up with evidence of wrongdoing, I'm all for him being booted. I'm just not willing to believe anything that anyone says about him, just because it sounds like something I'd imagine him doing. And while he's in office, I think that the constant undermining of his role as President is doing none of us any good. Sabotage and shadow governments are a very dangerous precedent to establish.

I'm basically just asking if evidence actually matters anymore, or if it's more important to get rid of someone that you don't like.

The fact is that at this point, there is no evidence to suggest that Trump actually tried to interfere with an investigation. We say "Comey's notes" are third-hand tellings from anonymous "sources", based on documents that may or may not exist, about an event that possibly didn't even happen, and if it did, could have been a completely innocent comment.

Basically, at this point, they're as relevant as a figment of a reporter's imagination. We can't even take them into consideration, because we can't even see what they actually say.

I'm sure that Trump's not happy about it. I'm sure that he's tired of the democrats and the press trying to discredit his election (which they're absolutely doing). And I think that Trump and his team need to work on their communication, because they often contradict each other. People who need to be in the loop don't seem to be in the loop. I get that Trump has no love for the press, and I don't blame him, but he needs to have a coherent message for the American people. Right now, he doesn't.

That said, I don't think that Comey's firing is the smoking gun that people are hoping for. The man was bad at his job and deserved to be fired a long time ago.

Tom Cavanagh will probably be with the show forever, but any number of his characters could still die. HR could die and be replaced next year, in keeping with the pattern. Harry could come back more regularly. It's a weird situation, because we always know the behind the scenes reasons for why characters aren't really in any danger, so we never really feel that tension when watching a show. But with the Wells characters, we really don't know!

I think the writers have shown impressive restraint with the Harry character. We know that Tom is a regular on the show, so Harry could be in every episode, if they waned. However, keeping him away and only using him a few times this season has made him feel like a legitimate guest star. When he shows up, you feel like you are seeing an actor return to the show.

The same thing happened with Sara in season 2. I'd go weeks, wondering when she would reappear... then I'd realize that she was still in the flashbacks, so Caity Lotz hadn't actually gone anywhere.

Okay, I have a question. Say there's no evidence of Trump messing with the election or working with the Russians, or any of that stuff that people have been going crazy over. Undoubtedly, there will still be speculation and all sorts of anonymous sources full of mysterious references to documents that we will never see, but let's say that there is no actual evidence.

Now say that despite this lack of evidence, political machines manage to turn these accusation into an impeachment and boot Trump from office (this is hypothetical, so don't ask me to explain how).

At that point, do you celebrate Trump being gone? Or do you protest the corrupt and underhanded method by which it happened?

Hypothetical question aside and moving on to a different topic, I think that the media is getting dangerously close to "boy who cried wolf" territory. One minute, people in the media are throwing around words like "treason" and "impeachment", and the next, they're backing away from such words, because there's no actual evidence of wrongdoing. They really should hold back on the speculation and outrage machine-fueling until they have something factual to report. I've seen so many stories today with comments like "President Trump is denying allegations...", when the real story is that there really wasn't a story when the press ran with it.

I think that there may very well come a time when there is something legitimate to report on Trump, but members of the media, from "legit" journalists, to late night comedians have been so gung-ho, focusing on one narrative and one endgame since election night, that there is a real risk of people ignoring a real story if it should actually arise. The bias is already undeniable. The lack of professionalism is obvious. We're getting to a point where, as Trump once said, he could shoot someone in Times Square and get away with it, because he's told some version of the truth more often than the press has.

Makes me wonder if this isn't a strategy of some sort. Is Trump making the press look crazy, so anything they say later won't be taken seriously?

I don't know... I get that they have to update the look of the show, but they went out of their way to assure us that this was the Prime universe and not the Kelvin universe, and yet it looks remarkably like the Kelvin universe. The Klingons look like they were changed just for the sake of changing them. They're not improved. They look kinda stupid.

I guess we can't comment on much of the plot yet, but the show has to walk a fine line here, or it will look like another half-assed fan film. I don't get why they feel a need to keep going back to a pre-Kirk era, when they could easily set a series post-Voyager. They've had enough time that they could set up any story they wanted. Open on a debris field, and slowly reveal that it's actually all that remains of Earth! The Federation is in shambles. Numerous enemies are taking advantage of the situation! How do we move forward?!?!

Or whatever.

Which means Supernatural vs Gotham.

Sigh. It's been a while since I had a real conflict! I will probably save Gotham for later, since there isn't a whole night of interesting programming on FOX there. Supernatural and Arrow work well together, though I'd swap timeslots if I were in charge. Supernatural is a darker show... Scooby-Doo episode notwithstanding.

http://ew.com/tv/2017/05/18/supernatura … r-episode/

Both shows were pretty strong this week. Arrow had been a lot better this year, which is nice. I think they should just move on from Olicity though. Seriously. It didn't work.

With The Flash... I would have probably sent Iris to Kara's Earth, which goes against everything I believe in as a TV fan, but it is what it is. Harry couldn't help her, and she wound up sitting in an alternate STAR Labs, right next to the machine that brings people to other worlds. At the very least, vibe her to another part of that world! But yeah, a world with superpowered alien allies would have been more preferable to loner Harry, who didn't even have his speedster daughter around.

I do have to wonder though... why not get Jesse? And for that matter, where was Julian? This is the big day that they've been building to, and they didn't even have all hands on deck?

As for who died, I think Iris had to be the one who was stabbed. There was no time for HR to change places with her. However, there has to be a twist, right? Did they find a way for Iris to be stabbed, but survive? I don't know. If it ends up being a switch, where HR died in Iris' place, I just don't think that it makes sense.

My main concern is, how much of this is a legitimate concern, and how much of it is narrative, made up by people who are upset that Hillary lost the election? We have a lot of people throwing around a lot of words that they don't seem to know the meaning of, acting as though all of these rumors are undeniable facts, but the truth is that we have very little, if anything, to work with when it comes to actual facts.

If Trump rigged the election in some way, I'm all for tossing him out of office and into prison. However, at this point, that sentence is a lot like saying that if Trump murdered a family of six and ate their bodies in order to hide the evidence, he should pay for that. Or if Trump is a unicorn poacher, he should be set adrift in space for all of eternity.

There is obvious corruption going on, from a lot of angles. Hillary should have been indicted, but she wasn't. Comey is a weasel who should have been fired long before he was. I have a hard time viewing the rabid "impeach Trump" crowd as anything but a bunch of crazies, because they're certainly not concerned with justice. I have no doubt that a lot of republicans would go along with whatever it takes to get rid of Trump, because they want people like Ryan or Pence to have more power... but that's not remotely close to what the actual voters wanted. The democrats wouldn't approve of Trump saving a puppy from a burning building at this point.

There's a big mess here. Sorting it out will probably be impossible. Most of the people involved are in the wrong.

We don't know anything legit about the Comey memo, except that if Comey took anything Trump did as an attempt to sway an investigation, he was obligated to report it. He didn't.

A lot of what we are working with here is wishful thinking and anonymous sources. There isn't any actual evidence so far. So discussing an impeachment at this point is just an attempt to get to the result you want, whether or not Trump actually did anything.

As I've said before, Trump isn't the one (or the only one) acting immature and foolish, nor is he the one (or only one) putting our entire system at risk over pettiness and greed. What we learned from those released emails is that Hillary and the DNC actually took steps to manipulate the election. Should I assume that everyone is equally outraged by that?

Are we talking about discovering the truth here, or are we discussing finding any excuse to get rid of Trump? If it's the first option, people are putting the cart before the horse. If it's the second option... Have fun with that.

I was debating whether this was a Marvel comment or a political comment. Finally settled on political.

I was reading an interview with the producers of AoS on TV Line (a site which is growing insufferable quickly) and they made a comment about the actor who plays Fitz wanting to wear his hair a certain way for this alternate reality storyline (or whatever it is. I haven't seen it yet). They joked that he is a Nazi now, based on the hair. So I looked it up, and saw that it's actually a pretty traditional hairstyle, so I was confused by the comment.

More Googling showed me that this is actually a thing now. Hipster millennials are freaking out because of this "Nazi" hairstyle that they suddenly realized they were using. Some people are trying to push the idea that it's some secret symbol for white nationalists.

Seriously. The derangement is getting out of hand. Having a man's hair cut short on the sides and longer on top isn't a Nazi thing. If they wore the style, it's because it's a pretty old style for men. The actual styling changes from person to person. Some just have messy spikes on top, some have a center part, some have the neat side part with slicked back hair... But the actual cut is pretty standard. Mostly because it's simple and doesn't require much fuss.

People need to stop looking for Nazis as though they're Waldo. They're not exactly a secret society that's known for being subtle. The hairstyle thing is ridiculous.

I hate when someone actually tries to have a debate or discussion on an issue, and they're just shouted down or ignored by the people who have no idea what's going on. If you actually believe in something, why would you be afraid to have someone question it?

I was sitting with a couple of people a few years back, and the topic turned to the white man coming in, murdering Indians and stealing the land. As usual, those people were conflating hundreds of years of complicated history into a single event, so I just said "Well, it was a little more complicated than that."
Both people looked at me as though I had just broken a law, and said "No it wasn't."

End of conversation.

Anyone who fears discussion or examination of a topic can't really believe in what they're saying. Sometimes I even agree with an overall opinion, but I can still allow for a gray area.

It all boils down to the face that people suck and I should stop interacting with silly humans.

I rarely use it on my phone, but it's been known to happen. My tablet hasn't worked in a while, but I used to use it all the time while working out.

I just don't see how this could possibly be good for Netflix, or even really what the point is. I am on a Windows machine right this second... and it's far more capable of pirating anything than my rooted Android phone is. Is all computer/mobile device support going to disappear? I just don't see the point to this.

It's true. It's become entertainment, in a way. People have their teams, just like with football. They cheer when their team scores, and they throw a fit and call the ref an idiot when they don't get their way. It has nothing to do with any actual issues (in fact, I've seen some loud Hillary supporters who I'm pretty sure don't realize that they're actually conservative in terms of beliefs). It's just teams. You never question your team. You never consider cheering for something that the other team did.

The real world has been suffering ever since the line between entertainers and politicians was crossed. I don't mean entertainers who become politicians, I mean treating politicians as though they're entertainers. Rubbing elbows with actors and musicians at swanky Hollywood parties, because they're all rich and famous, with huge egos. You eventually blur the lines between Kimye, and the people who control the nation's stash of nukes. Issues that should absolutely be debated and discussed in great detail are reduced to which team you're on. Too many people have no idea what they're actually supporting. You see people who support something when they're told that Hillary Clinton said it, and then turn around completely when they see that Trump actually said it. You see government officials saying that they'd support something if Hillary's name were on it, but it's criminal for Trump to propose it.

It's all disturbing.

Roaming Millennial recently posted a video on YouTube that caused a stir. In it, she makes the case against vegans (not veganism as a practice, just the actual vegans) who tend to have a d-bag complex. The point of her argument isn't that being a vegan is wrong, it's that those d-bag vegans aren't going to do anything to further their cause, because nobody likes a d-bag.

I agree with her, and I don't think that it's limited to vegans. I think that people who are concerned with the environment have the same issue. Whereas most people would agree that we want less litter and less smog, just for the sake of living in this world, and that we'd all love some sustainable alternative source of energy, the environmentalists tend to go a little crazy, betting all their chips on man-made climate change. They enter an unnecessary battle with people.

The same idea is true with many other activist groups as well. If they cared more about the change they want to see, and less about the cause that makes them feel like they're a very special warrior of justice, the world would be a much less dickish place to live. Nobody wants to eat lunch with the crazy Christian who is telling everyone that they're going to Hell. Cuz that guy's a dick too.

Netflix has decided that anyone with a rooted Android shouldn't be able to use their service anymore, so it doesn't even show up in the Play Store for anyone with a rooted phone.

Considering that this is a pretty standard function, and one of the primary draws of Android in the first place, I don't see how this goes well for Netflix. It's not like people are going to throw up their arms and decide not to root their phones or tablets anymore, just because Netflix doesn't work. If anything, they'll just side load Netflix, which gives the company even less control than they had before.

This looks a lot like shooting themselves in the foot to me.

Surprisingly not bad. I'm not sure if I think that it can last many seasons, but the first season is worth watching. They did go a little bigger than necessary though. It could have been a smaller, more subtle story.

It is really surprising that the show was renewed. The process of having fans rally and influence this sort of reversal has really gotten faster than when I was a kid. No letters. No hot sauce campaign. I guess this is good. The faster it happens, the less likely they are to lose actors, etc.

It's weird. I didn't see a new post alert for this thread, so I didn't know about this until I looked at NBC's schedule. I was thinking about the fact that they only had one show that I had any interest in (This Is Us), compared to maybe seven or eight at FOX. Then I saw Timeless listed for midseason and it took me a second to get what happened.

And this was right after I recovered from the shock of seeing The Exorcist on the FOX schedule.
