You've read Starlette! You know that I am capable of enjoying myself through some completely bonkers storylines. But every story needs a foundation... a heart. Sometimes it's enough to just have a really solid cast to keep a series coasting through nonsense (as with The Flash and Arrow), but Supergirl has miscast so many characters that none of it comes together.

Right now, Supergirl is still the worst. The story is crap and the cast is wrong. LoT has horrible writing, but a cast that is at least capable of creating gold, should the scripts ever arrive in workable condition.

The premiere was pretty solid. I like that it is human-based and not some vague CGI and the threat of an apocalypse. It is the result of everything thst the guys have done up to this point, which is neat. But I agree that the MoL method isn't as realistic in the US. They would have to have implemented it across Europe in order for that to make sense. I kinda doubt that it was as effective as it was made out to be. I wouldn't be surprised if the Men of Letters higher-ups have been infiltrated. Why else would they do nothing as the world came within seconds of being destroyed on several occasions?

Mary was well written too. She isn't just some kick-ass hunter, she is a complex character. A hunter, but with no love of the life. I could see her story going in a few different directions. I hope she doesn't get killed off. Maybe she could eventually even have another family  it gives the show a chance to expand the Winchester/Campbell family and have a character's life evolve. For some reason, it doesn't seem like they're allowed to do that with Sam and Dean.

I don't think that Daredevil dragged nearly as badly as Jessica Jones did, but I agree that they could probably all do with less. Maybe not set a strict number of episodes. Let the writers map it out and see how many scripts they end up with before they set a number for the season.

I don't think that there is a reason that they *couldn't* do 13 episodes. That's still not a huge number for a TV show. Maybe it's got less to do with the number than the way they're going about plotting the series. Maybe Jessica Jones could have helped a client along the line, or something. If Veronica Mars can do a full network season, Jessica Jones should be able to do 13.

I agree. Oliver's appearance was a little strange. I think they could have had the scene with Oliver in the beginning and maybe sent someone else with the new guy. Maybe Thea, or Curtis. Maybe someone from The Flash, like Cisco could have been brought in by Oliver. It was just weird to have Oliver there, but then he's just gone. It probably could have been fixed with a simple line of dialogue, like "Just give me ten minutes to get clear before you leave" or something like that.

I thought the premiere was horrible. Usually, the show is just a bunch of crazy comic book fun. It's never been particularly good or deep, but there have been enough moments to make it work, and the cast brought it together. This episode didn't have any moments to make it work. They basically crapped all over Albert Einstein, as part of this trend to rewrite real life history in fiction, for the sake of political causes. I'm all for having fun with history, but this went too far. Then they scattered the team, seeming to set up a season of trying to track everyone and bring them back together... but five minutes later, they were all back together. Months had apparently passed for them, at least, but they carried on conversations as though an hour had passed. And it didn't even make sense to track them down the way they did, because there was no way o track Ray to that spot at that moment.

There was no story here, just a bunch of chaos, hoping to hide the fact that there was no story. And they took characters that had been pretty solid at one point, and turned them into idiots.

I don't see this show lasting much longer, honestly. The sad part is, I'm not sure that Sara could even go back to Arrow, because they've turned her into someone else entirely.

I watched episode 1 of Luke Cage. It was pretty slow and boring. I will give it a few more episodes to grab me. I was disappointed, because he was a high point on Jessica Jones. There was a weird disconnect between his role on her show and how he behaved on his... Then again, he wasn't even consistent through the one episode I've watched of his show.

The directing was pretty weak too. I have heard a lot of good things about the show, so I'm hoping that it picks up.

I have to say though, whoever decided to cast a well  known actress (Alfre Woodard) in two different roles within the MCU, in the same year (!) should be fired. Are they even pretending to be connected anymore?

That's the image of conservatism that the media sells. The redneck southern folk who ain't never seen a black person before and wants to beat the crap out of gay people... the image of people who claim to be religious, but do everything evil in the world. Who would shun their child for getting pregnant.

The media portrays conservatives as small, hateful people. The truth is that there is a wide range of conservatism. First of all, not all of it even involves social issues. Many conservatives are simply fiscal conservatives. People who want less federal government poking into our lives, and more personal responsibility/local government oversight where needed. Which is really just the way the country was founded. States largely did their own thing in a lot of ways.

But even among social conservatives, it's rare that you're going to find the ugly people that you see on TV. I mean, did Sarah Palin send Bristol off to a nunnery when she got pregnant? I've known plenty of black conservatives, gay conservatives, and conservatives of all kinda. Again, it's about less government and more independence when it comes to living life.

Most of the TV writers have a comedic view of anywhere that isn't New York or California. Their idea of Texas is usually a joke, and their view of Christians is usually just as absurd.

It's funny. I sometimes watch YouTube videos of foreign people talking about their experience visiting the US, or interacting with Americans overseas. There are people who are genuinely shocked to visit the southern states and see black people and white people talking to each other, or gay people joking around with "rednecks".

This disconnect between fiction and reality is done on purpose, just like many "us vs. them" images that are spread around. Keeping people from seeing each other as human beings who might just genuinely have a different point of view. Today, you'll often see people dismissing anyone else's thoughts on a subject by saying "You're not (fill in the blank), so you couldn't possibly understand." It's just a way of avoiding having to hear another point of view. You're not the same race, so you don't get an opinion. You're not the same sex, so you don't get an opinion. You're "on the wrong side of history", as though anyone has ever been able to predict that one.

It's a peeve of mine. Instead of interacting with people, everyone surrounds themselves with a million Facebook friends who are exactly like them, and accuses everyone else of being Hitler. And the idea of context is completely gone. What a person actually means with their words doesn't matter as much as how those words can be twisted.

Donald Trump's popularity represents frustration that people feel. He says what nobody is supposed to say, because the world has become a pampered toddler where even adults need to be shielded from thoughts that might make them have to use a sad face emoji. The thing about Trump is that he's been both a democrat and republican over the years. The one constant is that he's always been a d-bag. Who knows what he actually believes at any given moment?

That said, I think that some of Obama's words have been just as harmful and divisive. He is just played up as being righteous and progressive as he does it.

You probably didn't need me to go on this long rant. smile

I think it's really sad, what they've done to the Sara Lance character. She was really cool on Arrow in season 2. Now she is a joke. She used to be strong and cool. Now she's their sex kitten who is incapable of intelligent thought. They probably tell themselves that she is like the macho Kirk-like figures in old fiction, but in the form of a woman. But she's not. She's an excuse for girl on girl action, while looking like a fool.

Maybe she should have stayed dead.

I appreciate that. I still have to vote though, and at this point that vote will be about choosing the lesser evil. Looking at what is likely to happen with the Supreme Court, etc.

At the very least, anyone who votes this year should feel dirty and sick about it. I have a family member who voiced her enthusiasm after early voting, saying that she has never been more certain of her choice. Those types of comments make me really nervous about the state of humanity this time around. Anyone who doesn't see the flaws in their candidate is just not keeping their eyes open.

But I won't judge. I will probably have to vote with my eyes closed, nose pinched, and maybe drunk.

My brother went swimming with his Note 2 a few months ago. He managed to fix it... but then went swimming with it again a couple of weeks later. It didn't survive that one.

He upgraded to a Note 4, which he found on eBay and he seems to really like it.

My two other brothers have an S6 and an S7. My sister in law has the S5, and my father has the S5 Active... I guess we are a Samsung family. So I've had a chance to look them over. Honestly, I loved the Note 7, when I saw it in the store. I think it is a bit poetic that the phone sunk because of the battery, since so many Samsung fans used to love their changeable batteries. It is a shame, because the phone itself is really, really nice.

If I ever do upgrade, I think I'm going to want some of the more recent features, like Samsung Pay. But I don't see myself being able to afford anything like that in the near future, so my S4 will do fine.

I did just set up wireless charging. It is really cool, except I wanted to use it on my nightstand, since my phone is my clock at night. The problem is, the phone stops charging when the battery is full. Then it drops down a percent or two, and starts charging again. When it does, a bright notification comes on the screen and the phone makes that sound that they make when you plug them in... And this continues until you just take the thing off the charger... Which would be fine, if I didn't have the screen on all night so that it could serve as a clock.

But wireless charging is cool during the day. ☺

I was going to update my S4 with a custom ROM. Unfortunately, it's boot locked, so I don't have that option.

Maybe I can get a Note 7 for cheap!

I don't think that Kasich could beat her. Hillary was never going to play fair or be nice, and he couldn't take her on. He would look weak and forgettable. Ryan, I have to doubt as well. He's seen as a sellout by a lot of people in the party. Many don't even want him to have the job he has at this point.

This time around, I think it was always going to have to be someone that wasn't seen as part of the establishment. After McCain and Romney, people were too frustrated to go for someone like that again. Trump got support because he says a lot of things that people have been waiting for someone to say for a very long time (in between his being crazy). I think Cruz was also as popular as he was because he's always been willing to challenge the establishment (which is why they don't like him). It had to be someone from the "outside".

1,213

(3,520 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

I agree. The establishment disagreed with what the people wanted. So, rather than endorse a candidate that the people would get behind, they stomped their feet and refused to grow up until it was too late. We started it with far too many candidates, most of whom never stood a realistic chance, and most of whom stayed in the race for far too long. The establishment hates Ted Cruz, but he was the candidate that the people were leaning toward (others had their following, but obviously didn't have enough).

The more the establishment tried to impose their will on the people, the more the people rebelled. It turned into a giant mess, which is a shame, because we had a really solid candidate this year, but he got tossed in favor of a sideshow.

The same thing happened with the democrats, but with a different method of screwing over their people.

The problem is that many of Hillary's crimes are directly linked to his crimes. She threatened his victims and used her power and her connections to shut them up.

There are many more crimes to go after, but nobody seems to care about breaking laws or endangering national security. For some odd reason, people can brush that aside. But her threatening rape victims plays against her feminist image. That could be more damaging.

Fanfic is fun, in that you don't have to think quite as much or take it quite as seriously. If I see an error in Buffy Season 8, I shrug and move on. In one of my books, it drives me insane. It is genuinely relaxing to write something that doesn't matter sometimes.

Fanfic could open doors in terms of building a following that could potentially follow you to your original work.

Fanfic is also good practice. I haven't written in screenplay format in years. Writing fanfic could help me get back to that.

Also, I have some really good ideas for Supergirl!

But right now, I have a book coming out in a few weeks, three more to edit and prep in that series, and a whole other book to edit and release after that (this one started out as a Supernatural idea, in a way. So I kinda took your advice!). So I don't know if I will ever have time to write just for the fun of it.

Which leaves my website in a coma. Maybe I can use it as a training facility for people who want to write. Starting with fanfic is a good strategy. I could be like Oliver Queen training newbies!

I don't believe that NBC worried about the video being released. They have known about it for at least a couple of months. They planned to release it themselves, and edit around their own guy (one might call that a heavily edited video... Actually, it still is). They waited specifically for the purpose of effecting the election.

Anonymous might have proof of Bill Clinton raping a 13 year old girl on "rape island", according to a video that they released. The idea of Trump and the Clintons being in on this together sounds crazy... But there is another connection. Jeffrey Epstein. Google his name with either Clinton or Trump and you find allegations of pedophilia related to both men.

It could be conspiracy. At the very least, it is interesting to note.

NBC knew about the tape, but held it until closer to the election, to have an impact on the election. This means a few things...

1. They are actively trying to get one candidate elected and are willing to withhold information to do it.

2. They had no problem with what Billy Bush said or did, and he is being punished for show.

3. Depending on when they knew about this tape, they could have prevented the Republicans from making an informed decision about who they wanted as a candidate. Certainly, an earlier reveal could have changed the name on the ticket, especially if they knew before the convention. So this isn't even just about taking down Trump. It is about pushing Hillary.

I agree. On my personal Facebook page, I don't discuss politics (I use the page as a means of keeping up with my acting stuff. A lot of my friends are actors... Bringing politics to the set would do me no good at all). I see both sides, but I rarely see them talking in a civil fashion. I have always loved the push and pull of debating issues, where everyone can argue, but it isn't about hating each other. That is just gone now, and I think that this culture didn't just happen by mistake. I think that a people divided are easier to control and manipulate. People literally get offended if you present a *fact* that they don't want to hear. They believe lies, which are known lies, because they're holding their person up as some sort of idol.

I hate Hillary Clinton. I think she is a psychopath (literally, not as a figure of speech). Donald Trump is nearly as bad... Possibly as bad a person, with a .001% chance of not completely destroying the country. My horse was out of this race a long time ago, so now I have no good options.

Our whole system depends on people questioning our leaders. It depends on journalists giving us facts and holding politicians accountable. None of this is happening anymore.

Arrow --

Maybe it is because I watched seasons 1 and 2 over the break and I'm not coming off of season 4, but this season feels pretty right so far. Felicity is back to normal, finally. I like her with the new guy. Oliver is kicking ass again and only gets beaten when he wants to. The trainees aren't dominating the show. Thea and Quentin are being put to good use.

I don't know where the Diggle story is going. Honestly, the "evil army men" trope is a bit stale and disrespectful at this point, but it isn't too bad story-wise. I just want him to come home and find a way to get Sara back. It'd be weird if he remembered her for some reason, though I imagine that Barry wouldn't survive that situation.

So far so good.

A lot of the reports of Project Veritas videos being edited were false. They released both edited and unedited versions, but the media only reported on the edited videos, just so they could use the term "heavily edited video". As though their own reports aren't heavily edited anyway.

For a while, I've been trying to think of something interesting to do with my SomplaceThatIsElse website. The problem is that I don't have a ton of time for things like fanfic these days...

But I had this idea that is interesting to me. I don't know if I have time, but I'm always watching shows or movies and thinking that there was a ton of potential in there, but the creators failed to deliver for whatever reason (Supergirl, Civil War, etc). So I was thinking that it would be fun to actually rewrite some of these projects and try to make them better. There could even be episodes of Sliders that sucked, but could have been reimagined into something good. Then there could be a poll to see if the "better" version was actually better than what was originally produced. And it wouldn't just be me writing this. I could open it up to other writers who think that they could do better than someone else.

It would be a fun little challenge/competition element to add into the fanfic world... but without prizes.

I don't know. It's just an idea. Like I said, I don't really have time to run such a thing. But it'd be fun to see if a bad TV show or movie could have been good in someone else's hands, or if those complaining are all talk.

So, I was just watching Project Veritas videos of Clinton campaign staffers openly saying that it's okay to rip up Republican voter registration forms, and to simply not give them forms to allow them to vote through the mail (while pushing the option for Democrats). One was even discussing grabbing a woman's ass (he'd have to do it at least twice in order to get fired!)

These are a couple of blatant crimes. On video. So, where is the wall to wall news coverage? Where is the outrage? Where are the investigations into voter fraud? Why do people care about disgusting talk from Trump, but not actual deeds by Hillary's campaign?

Of course, it probably goes back to one of the latest leaks from Wikileaks, showing Hillary's camp coordinating with a few dozen prominent journalists on the announcement of her candidacy and how the press would frame it. The fact is, they simply won't report anything negative about her. And this is not the way things are supposed to be. The journalists should be holding candidates accountable, not working for them. That is the function that "freedom of the press" was supposed to serve. Now we just have a machine that churns our lies to the people.

And to be clear, I wouldn't want them to hide anything about conservatives either. Politicians should answer to the people. But that doesn't happen anymore. And this is what's wrong with the system. They're changing the rules for what politicians should be allowed to do in office, and they're changing the rules for how they are to be held accountable. It's wrong.

1,229

Yeah, they completely resolved Barry's issues with his mother's death... and then they had him go back and change it. It was a very strange and unnecessary move.

Technically, we're probably on timeline 8 or 9 by now. The original, the Eobard (our Prime), Central City crushed under a big wave, Central City not crushed under a wave, Pied Piper is good now, everyone gets blown up by Vandal Savage, everyone survives Vandal Savage, Barry saves his mother, Barry tries to repair the timeline.

None of this is counting Legends of Tomorrow.

I liked Fringe. When they did this, it was huge and it was risky, but they pulled it off, and the show was still good. The problem here is that Barry's selfish actions didn't just result in the death of Dante, it resulted in erasing baby Sara from existence. That is something that I really don't think was necessary, because unless the speed force steps in and fixes what Barry has broken, he essentially killed a baby.

And the way they've explained this situation only confuses matters. If Barry creates new branches in the timeline, the others should all still exist. But that doesn't seem to be the way they want to play this. They want to play it as irreparable damage, so his little diagram wasn't accurate. It's not a branching off, it's more like recording over an old tape (one which Cisco should still be able to see, by the way).

I'm not even clear on when the show takes place right now. Did Barry return to the time he left, or did he return to three months later?

1,230

(1,683 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

This week's Flash pissed me off a little.

I get that they wanted to give Barry a hard lesson and make him regret what they did. Killing Cisco's brother did that, without his being directly responsible. However, what happened to baby Sara... That is messed up. Barry erased Diggle's baby! As a viewer, I'm not cool with that. And he seemed to get over it pretty quickly.

This whole storyline is destabilizing something that worked really well. It is uncomfortable to watch. So, Barry is in this new timeline. Does that mean that the others ceased to exist? Or does Sara still exist out there somewhere? And if she does... We are just ditching the other timeline and following the new one on all of the show's?

Honestly, it would have been funny if Barry erased most of the last two years of Arrow. But why the baby?

See, I don't get how saying "jail her" or calling Bill a rapist is living in the sewers. Hillary Clinton is guilty 100%, without a doubt, of crimes which would have anyone else in the country either thrown in prison or possibly even tried for treason. Acting as though it is silly, reckless or somehow gossipy to point this out is simply a refusal to acknowledge the truth.

And there is at least as much evidence to convict Bill of rape as their is Bill Cosby, if not more. Again, screaming the truth has become the only option, because what other option is there? Neither one of those people will pay for their crimes. They get away with it because the laws of normal citizens do not apply to them.

I'm sorry, but I can't vote for Hillary. Voting for her is not a vote for decency, or maturity. It's a vote for someone who does whatever she wants, because she is above the law. She lies, cheats, steals, kills, and absolutely nothing happens to her. She threatens her husbands victims and their families in order to cover for his misdeeds, and she is held up as a champion of women everywhere. She wouldn't just be a bad president. She is evil. She is a psychopath, with no regard for human life. With no understanding of basic right and wrong.

And don't get me wrong. The idea of voting for Trump makes me sick to my stomach. I don't think that he is qualified. I don't think that he is stable. I think that he has a whole slew of psychological issues, but being a psychopath is not one of them.

This election is a game of Russian Roulette. Side with Trump, and you're playing with a revolver. Side with Hillary and you're playing with a semi-automatic.

There is no decency here. There is no good option. right now, I'm thinking in terms of cutting off limbs in order to save the patient's life.

The problem is, Hillary Clinton threw the Constitution out the window decades ago. Yeah, she isn't as openly embarrassing as Trump, but she could be far more damaging to the country in the long run.

Trump may very well be impeached. That would probably be a good thing (though it would leave us with Pence). But if Hillary wins, none of her crap will be challenged. She will never be impeached.

Neither one of them are fit to be president. Neither are good people. Neither will be good for the country. Both of them make me sick. But the only choice that I have at this point is to vote for the person who makes me slightly less sick. Trump's list of Supreme Court candidates looks better to me than what Hillary would do. Some of what he says (in between making a complete f---ing fool of himself and our country) is more viable than what Hillary proposes.

I may have to get really damn drunk before I go to do it (which is odd because I don't drink)... but I don't have a choice but to vote for Trump. The impeachment option just makes me feel a little bit better about doing it.

I'm not opposed to a happier Clark. I think that there is room for different takes on the character. I don't see the DCEU version as being as broody and dark as you see him (he was smiling at the girl in Mexico when he saved her, and then frowned when he turned and watched the building still on fire), but he is a more serious take on the character. I don't expect the TV version to be like that, because the show aims for a lighter tone. However, the writers don't know how to create real, layered characters. Clark and Kara seem to come from a world where people are born with traumatic brain injury. Their smiling and winking and jumping up and down isn't looking like optimism to me, it's looking awkward and fake.

To contrast, Barry Allen is always smiling. He's always joking around with the people he's close to. He enjoys being the Flash. He is a light and fun character, but he isn't acting like an idiot. On top of that, the childhood trauma echoes through his present life. It doesn't weigh the show down, but it is always there.

These criticisms go for Clark and Kara both. I just don't get why they have to take characters with so much to offer, and reduce them to bubbly little high school kids. This series reminds me of the old Superman movie in a lot of ways. It's goofy. It's uneven. It's miscast when it comes to many characters. The writers aren't taking it seriously. They're just regurgitating their idea of what we've already seen before. They're not creating, they're trying to mimic, and they're failing. Superman and Supergirl aren't about smiles and winks. Above all, they're about heart. And that is where this show fails, and Cavill succeeds.

It's the same old problem that I've always had with the character. He is potentially a great, rich character. But too many writers are hung up on Christopher Reeve, which was a bad take on the character. We have moved past that in so many ways, both on Smallville and in the movies, and yet certain writers keep going back to that low point.

Basically, they're writing him like a MCU character. smile

So yeah, it turned into a psychoanalysis. But I don't think this is about Superman or Supergirl so much as examining the writers of the show. They're just being lazy and not doing the work.

Yeah, I think this was the first time that we got a Gotham reference. Though technically, I don't know if this is the Arrowverse. It's a different universe!

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like any of the show's real problems were dealt with. The move from LA to Vancouver is fine. The show looks fine. But the whole thing is still under-cooked.

First of all, Clark. Yes, he smiled. Not surprising since this is just a rehash of the same thing we've been watching the character do for the past 80 years or whatever. He's "aw gosh" and fun and light, which would be fine if it were in context of making him a real character. Smallville's Clark Kent was a Kansas boy, with down-home values, whose favorite hangout was a barn. Yet, they (mostly Tom Welling) managed to make him relatable. He had layers. He was too good to be a real person most of the time, but he wasn't a cardboard cutout of a cartoon character either.
The Supergirl version is, much like the rest of the show, flat. Bland. Goofy. Cartoonish. And I still have to say, horribly miscast. It's like they waned to hire someone who wouldn't make Supergirl look tiny, but in doing so, they cast someone who makes Superman look like Superboy.

People make fun of Cavill's Superman, but the thing I love about that interpretation is that the writers broke down the character and developed him as though he were any other character in a film. Who he is can be traced back to where he comes from and how he was raised. The flaw in so many Superman incarnations is that the writers base their whole approach on old lunchboxes. When I look at these versions, I don't see me. I don't see the best of humanity.

But Clark is just a guest star. This is Kara's show. So, if they want to make him the cartoon version of Superman, fine. But they should at least invest in the real development of her character. And they don't. They don't even base her on Supergirl lunchboxes, they base her on old, rusted, smelly Superman lunchboxes. Kara/Supergirl is nothing. There is nobody there, except a shadow of Superman. And every time they have a chance to make her more than that, they ignore it. At times, she is way, way too childlike. This chick watched her entire plant blow up. She lost everything she ever knew or loved. She had to rebuild her life on an alien world from scratch, learning the language and learning how to blend in, all while mourning for her entire civilization.

Barry Allen lost *one* person.

For me, everything comes down to character. And I'm fine with making her an optimist. She watches her world blow up, but she survived. She can ride high on that. But none of her history is apparent, so why bother having it there in the first place? Why give her a backstory that even Clark can't wrap his mind around? I hate it when writers ignore the story, just so they can force their will on the characters. And there is a difference between having characters who are fun and optimistic, and having characters who act like their work day should include recess and nap time.

Plot...

There wasn't much to talk about. Kara's sudden shift away from Jimmy didn't make sense, but they never really made sense in the first place. The James character feels really unnecessary at this point. And with Cat going away, I'm not sure that I see the point in keeping the Catco element at all.

Winn working with Alex makes sense (though I don't like the military setting for Supergirl, but whatever). But if they're going to have Luthor Corp as a recurring element on the show, they need to teach Jeremy Jordan the difference between the words "Corp" and "Corps". Luthor has a corporation, not a military branch.

It seems like they're really digging in deep with the show's flaws. And as time goes on, they're just becoming more pronounced. I was hoping that at least the production side would seem more organized, but it doesn't. We have Kara changing outfits three times in ten seconds, and then the editing made it seem like she took five minutes to get into her Supergirl costume.

I really don't think that the L Corp building would be cleared for normal business. I mean, it didn't fall down, which is a victory, but I wouldn't really call that the end of the story.

The drama between J'onn and Clark was so weird and stupid. Clark is pissy about the DEO having a weapon that could kill a kryptonian? So? A few hours earlier, Supergirl was battling an army of bad kryptonians! Not to mention the fact that every person in the DEO (including Clark) had the means to kill any human in the place. Why is it offensive to have a weapon against an alien threat, but just good common sense to have a weapon that would work on any normal person?

The whole thing was just frustrating. I hope they don't cross over too much.

On a lighter note, Brenda Strong is on the show now. She seems to be popping up everywhere now. Good for her! I actually met her... it was awkward.

The process has to change. The establishment Republicans didn't want someone who would challenge their corruption, so they did their best to destroy viable candidates. The people don't want the establishment, so they ran to the guy who will burn down the house and figure out the details later.

The media wants Hillary, so they are doing whatever they can to excuse her sins while blowing up Trump's.

And the internet has become a place where conversation doesn't even happen. Remember those big long political debates we used to have in our Sliders fandom? That can't happen anymore. Now, you agree or you're blocked. You fall in line, or you're a racist, or a sexist, or a homophobe. There is no exchange of ideas. And this is encouraged by the politicians in charge who want us attacking each other, because it keeps everyone in separate groups that are easily herded. We are on the verge of a race war, and people think that it is because of racism and killing innocent people. It isn't. It is about manipulation.

We don't know how to have an election in a world of social media. Where every thought and belief must fit into a tweet.

In closing, I propose that we destroy the internet. It was fun while it lasted, but it is ultimately a weapon of mass destruction that we can't control, because controlling it would be wrong.

I'm either being really deep, or really tired right now. I think I'm just tired.

Exactly. And this is what is so f---ing frustrating to me. Do you watch Fox 4 news (this is the benefit of us living close together!). Every night, they have a report on Trump where they play up how crazy he is. If there is a single protester at a rally of his, it will get its own segment. Then they go to a story about a speech Hillary gave, and discuss her position in said speech... They don't mention her crazy outbursts, or her old recordings. They talk about her pneumonia, but not the fact that people were discussing her issues with falling over long before this diagnosis. They demand nothing of her. They question nothing of her. Basically, they are just campaigning for her.

There is a lot for her to answer for. While people talk about Trump being a pig and saying vile things (he did. It is disgusting. I hate him, so I am not defending him), and equate his *words* to rape, they ignore Hillary's history of victimizing the women that her husband had already victimized. He raped them, and she made them keep their mouths shut, threatening them and their families. Some of them did back down or bow out. Others didn't. Those who are screaming to be heard are not being shown on the news. The media is helping Hillary sweep them under the carpet. Hillary claims to be a champion of women, but she aids the destruction of rape victims. She should be made to answer for that, but she never will.

Hillary Clinton ton is on tape in 2008, discussing the fact that she doesn't want to use email because it will leave her exposed during investigations. This is HUGE, in respect to her email scandal (where she destroyed tens of thousands of emails) but how often have you seen that lost video on the nightly news? Fox 4 cut into programming to report on this video of Trump being a pig, yet they didn't even report Hillary's lost video.

The election is a mess because the media made it that way. They, along with the establishment Republicans, (and Democrats for that matter) destroyed our chances of getting legitimate candidates. They chose who they wanted in office and now Hillary could sacrifice a newborn baby to Satan live on Facebook, and it would get zero news coverage.

I feel like there are a lot of things that I want to say right now, but I have no idea how to approach the subject of this Trump video, so I can't form a proper post.

This whole election cycle has been insane. These past few days have just... I think my brain is broken.

I just watched the pilot. I wanted to like it, since I have liked the work of the show's creators in the past... But it kinda sucked.

The history element was lazy. They kept this running gag about the bad guy wearing pajamas, despite the fact that he wasn't dressed too differently than several of the 1930's extras. Coveralls aren't new.

They kept acting as though the 1930's were mind-bogglingly different, but they over sold it. It wasn't the 1730's. Things weren't all that different in a lot of ways.

I also thought that they went for a lot of the time travel clichés. It just felt flat and lifeless. Like it was copied from history depicted in other TV shows, and wasn't written as real people living in a real place.

Time travel shows can't avoid paradoxes. This show was no different. If A goes back in time and alters it, how does B even remember the original timeline? The trick is to sell us on the story, so we don't care about the logic. In this case, they failed to do that.

My concern now is that whatever they do next will damage what has been built up over the first two seasons. The show's strength was great character relationships. If they alter that, it could make things awkward and alienate the audience.

They shouldn't have jumped ahead three months. They could have done a few episodes that spanned those three months. In doing this, they could have lined up with the other shows in time for the crossovers, but explored their idea more fully.

I read one of the Supergirl's in an interview the other day, and they suggested that the Arrow and Supergirl universes haven't merged. Kara will be crossing over, but her universe will remain as it is. Which is okay with me, because Supergirl just doesn't fit this universe that they've created.

The Flash:

It was an interesting episode. Obviously, if they didn't have to worry about Arrow premiering the next day, or Legends coming on next week, maybe they could have spent two or three episodes on that storyline. As it was, it was rushed. Why was Joe an alcoholic? Why was Caitlin an eye doctor? Where was Ronnie? Why was this universe "wrong" and tearing apart the timeline when it is actually the timeline that was supposed to exist in the first place (had Eobard not gone back in time to change things)?

It would have been fun to see Barry look for Oliver or Felicity for help. Maybe without Barry around, Oliver's identity was discovered by the public years ago (no mask). There are fun little things to think about there. But oh well.

As it was... It was fun. It was okay. It wasn't great. And I'm curious to see how much of what we know has changed, and how many of those changes are worth it. Fringe took a big, big risk when they altered the timeline and too Peter out of it. Some people never liked the way things turned out (though I was fine with it, because it was done well).

I guess we'll see.

Arrow:

First of all, why was everyone calling Diggle "John"? It was weird. For two seasons, he was "Diggle" or "Digg" and now we time jump two years and he's suddenly "John"? Are they trying to set up the Green Lantern thing? I don't get it.

There were problems with the episode. The way certain scenes were staged didn't sell the point of what they were trying to do (new bad guy taking out the dirty cops, for example). It wasn't perfect, for sure.

That said, it was a pretty nice step up from the sloppy fan films that we've been putting up with since the show went on hiatus two years ago. Oliver killing people makes sense. It just does. And when he wasn't doing everything in his power to stop murderers, he looked like a fool. As I was watching Thea get upset, I made the comment that Laurel would still be alive if Oliver had taken out Damien earlier (and also if he hadn't super-glued the totem back together). Then Oliver said the same thing. For the first time in years, we were on the same page. When you're fighting a war, you can't hold back.

Having less people in the hideout was kinda refreshing. It allowed Oliver to shine when he was fighting bad guys, because they didn't have to allow ten other characters to look good. I hope the Potential Slayers coming onto the scene don't ruin that. I really liked Oliver this week. His witty remarks were cool.

I liked having Felicity back as a sidekick, without emotional drama (as we've seen in those fan film that I mentioned before). I liked Thea as supportive, but outside of the fighting (for the most part). I liked the human bad guys.

I hated Felicity staying in Oliver's apartment (which he kinda stole from Thea). What's with that? In all of those fan films, she walked out on him. Why does she get to stay in the place that he lived in before they got together?!

Laurel's final words were interesting. It's weird, because I know that the new girl will be Artemis, not a Canary... and Laurel knew that White Canary was still out there somewhere. So it was a little bit of an awkward line. Unless they're planning to make Curtis, like... Blacker Canary. I never got why they named him Curtis Holt and not Michael Holt, who was Mr. Terrific in the comics. Are we going to get yet another sibling rising from the grave?

I'm curious to see how/if Flashpoint changed anything. Could Huntress come back? Could Tommy be out there? (probably not, since Oliver only took killing off of the table because of him and that's still a thing)

I guess we'll find out. I just hope that they don't retcon Diggle's family out of the picture or anything like that.

Dude... You have to watch the Ultimate Edition. It is a complete movie now.

While I did like the theatrical cut, I think WB was absolutely wrong to cut the movie the way they did.

Ah. I guess it makes sense, since people have been talking about the deleted stuff. I just hope that they don't add stuff that was taken out for a good reason. We shall see!

I'm excited to see the movie again either way.

Still rewatching Arrow's second season. I reached the point where Moira Queen announces her candidacy to run for mayor. I remember when the episodes first aired, I watched it like "Really?!?! She was just on trial for killing 500 people and now she's up in the polls?!?! REALLY?!?!"

Now I watch the episodes and I'm like "Yup."

If I want social satire, I just turn on the news.

Honestly though, I don't remember the last time I saw really good satire. It seems like everything on TV is PC nonsense disguised as un-PC humor these days.

If you're accepting that everything on the show actually happened, suck it up and make it work. I hated a lot of what happened in the final season of Buffy and corrected it in my season 8. It took some work to explain some of that crap away, but it's what you do. You can't rewrite the past.

You could incorporate Collin in a somewhat vague and mysterious way, like have Remmy pause and think that someone is missing for a moment, and Quinn holding his breath, waiting to see if Remmy will remember... Then Remmy shakes it off and moves on.

The problem here is that you create a mystery that you don't intend to solve. You can keep Collin out of your master work, but it would probably require you to write a short story on the side that explains what happened there.

You really have to just give in and acknowledge Collin in your series. But you do get to decide how you go about doing that.

I thought I did post about it... Didn't I? It's been a pretty hectic summer. My brain is mush.

Anyway, book 2 is out. Book 3 will be out in November! smile

I'm not risking it with the McGyver reboot. But honestly, it doesn't look good, so I probably wouldn't bother anyway.

Whether worlds are incredibly violent or not, I think that the characters would need to be defensive. If they're not like soldiers, they'd be like spies. They would need to develop skills for different situations, from simply reading a culture for the sake of blending in, to fighting for their survival if necessary.

I think violence, to some degree, is a necessary part of civilization. Many people today don't have to face that fact simply because we have other people doing our fighting for us. But where there are humans, there will be conflict. Where there is conflict, there will be violence. The rest is just a matter of degree.

I'd just like to say it's really cool of you to not immediately dismiss the idea that the Season 3 monsters could be used effectively and in a way that's true to the themes and values of SLIDERS in its first two seasons.

You've read my work, right? Naked zombies. Disgruntled former waiters, attacking Hollywood celebrities who have remarkably good fighting skills... there's not a whole lot that I immediately dismiss. smile

Back in the days of movie serials, writers would throw characters off of a cliff and leave audiences hanging until the next installment. Then they'd come back and resolve this impossible situation by rewriting the scene and including an easy out. It was a dishonest cheat because it never really resolved the problem at all. It just made it go away.

My policy is that anything already published is set in stone (story wise. Fixing errors is still okay). If people have already read it, a change is dishonest. Those people probably won't go back and read the previous part, so now they'll just be wondering what's going on.

So... Probably not the answer that you're looking for. Sorry. Plenty of people would revise with no problem. It would just drive me insane.

Why is everyone talking about seasons that never existed? I know there has been a bit of a delay between seasons, and the fanfic machine went a little crazy, but c'mon. Season 3 premieres on October 5!

As for Supergirl... I think people overstated the trouble with matching the look of the show. While Catco has big windows overlooking the city, it is still an indoor set, with fake lighting. Same with the DEO and Kara's apartment. Then we have establishing shots of the city, which can also be used for flying shots, and these are going to be the same. Filming on the street can be helped by using lighting techniques and coloring techniques in post. If The X-Files can make Vancouver look like a desert in New Mexico, I'm sure they can make a cloudy day look sunny.

I rewatched the episode with the Flash last night, because I thought it would be the least offensive way of dipping my toe back in. And yeah, there were some fun moments, but there were some parts of that episode that were just unbecoming of a primetime series on a major network. Really poorly done. I hope the Vancouver crew is better.

I was just watching Chaos on the Bridge, on Netflix. It details the drama of making Star Trek RNG, mostly in the first two seasons, when everyone running the show was nuts. Tracy Torme is featured.

So it got me to thinking about the discussion that we were having about a Sliders con panel the other day, and I decided that a documentary might be easier. Go to each interview subject and have them tell their story... Probably more likely to happen than a convention panel.

If this could get made, I think it could show that there is still interest in Sliders as well. I have no idea how to convince people to make this, but looking at some of the documentaries on Netflix about different fandoms, I think it is at least possible. Maybe. Someday.

Anyway, go watch Chaos on the Bridge.
Then watch Lost Soul, about the making of the 1996 Island of Dr. Moreau movie. That one is such a strange, insane story. Not entirely unlike how I picture Sliders in my head sometimes.

I just took one of those silly online quizzes, to find out which side of the brain I use more. Am I more artistic and imaginative, or rational and analytical?

Turns out, I'm 50/50. I wonder if that's what my problem is here. I can't just sit back and let the story be fun. It also has to make sense to me, or else it isn't fun at all.

I promise, I don't do it consciously. smile
