I think the option of hosting those movies on their site is a good idea... except, they're already working on a streaming project that would interfere with that.

Didn't Paramount allow a sort of unofficial-yet-official fanfic a while back, realeasing them through their book publishers? I vaguely remember that.
Star Trek always had a unique relationship with fans. Their open submission policy for their tv shows was unlike anything I've seen before or since. I loved that, and they got some good writers from it.
Sadly, fans took advantage of this relationship. Because of those groups, Paramount had to pull way back, and in a loud way. These rules may he loosened in the future, I think, but Paramount needed to make it clear who the owner of the property was. It will be a few years at least before they loosen up.

It'd be helpful if they would start giving us some idea of what this is looking like. At the very least, tell us which timeline it takes place in. I know that mystery is usually good for these projects, but that only works when you haven't kinda burned your bridges with a lot of people (not necessarily just blaming the Abramsverse. Enterprise was a mess that retconned a lot of stuff that it shouldn't have)
In other news, Paramount released some fan film guidelines and will not sue fan film makers who follow these rules:
http://www.startrek.com/fan-films
A lot of fans are pissed off, because it severely limits what they can do and puts a lot of productions in jeopardy. However, I totally see why Paramount did it. If someone took one of my books and wrote fanfic based on it to post on the internet, I would probably think that it was cool. If that person turned around and started selling that story and making a profit off of that material, I would have a problem. That's my money that they're taking at that point.
Fans are upset because Paramount doesn't seem to respect their fan films. However, it was those "fans" who violated the trust of the company in the first place. They raised millions of dollars for these productions, created entire studios to make them and earned a salary off of them. The only people who weren't gaining from the use of Paramount's intellectual property was Paramount. Once those fan films started getting out of control, I don't see how Paramount could ignore them. Paramount is making their own movies which are (let's face it) authorized fan films at this point. If the official productions are competing with people who aren't even licensing the material, Paramount has to push back.
If the fan films were small, innocent productions, this wouldn't have blown up. But the makers kept pushing the limits of what they were allowed to do, and that's not cool.
On another note, we should totally create a Sliders fan-made series! I'm sure we could get some of the old actors. At the very least, we should be able to get some of the old Star Trek actors who are out of work now!

Re: Personal Status Updates! (759 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
I get that stress. During my run with Buffy season 8, I had people writing in to tell me that I had inspired them to become a writer. I had college professors bringing my work into their lessons. I had fanfic based on my fanfic. People were copying my style (because back then, script format wasn't nearly as common as it is today). It felt like a beast, and there were times when I was trying to maintain that TV-like schedule and polishing scripts right up to the last second. It was pretty intense, but fun at the same time.
I guess both have different benefits and downsides. Obviously, your own work with your own characters is exciting. It's like watching your kids grow up and become people that you never expected them to be. They surprise you, disappoint you and make you proud in ways that fanfic can't really do. They're yours. And there aren't a lot of people who can say "she would never do that!" when you write something for a character. You have instant feedback with fanfic, which can be good or bad, I suppose.
But the challenges of original work are still there. You can't rely on a pre-built world. You have to make people feel like they're in this place that they've never seen. You have to make these characters come to life without actor voices behind them. You have to control every element. There's no wikipedia page for you to use for continuity. And no matter how much work you put into it, you probably won't get much of a response, at least at first.
It's give and take, whatever you're writing.

Re: Personal Status Updates! (759 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Original work can be more depressing. There is nothing to build upon, so you have to gain a following of your own, which is hard. People who read your work could love it, but getting it in front of them in the first place is frustrating.
I wish you luck though. If I can be of any help, let me know.
And for what it's worth, I still consider my Buffy season 8 to be canon, while the official comic books aren't . They just suck and I refuse to accept them.

Season 9...
I've only watched the two-part premiere so far, but it was pretty weak. The super soldier concept is fine. But the mystery surrounding Mulder and Scully and their baby is just weirdly off. Mulder is gone because... he is. There are scenes where people are being very dramatic and mysterious about nothing in particular. Oddly, Mulder and Scully became the weakest part of the show. If they'd just been cut loose, the show would have been better off.
I'm curious to see where Doggett is today. Honestly, I don't see him staying with the FBI or putting up with the BS. I would say that he would have become part of the war on terrorism, but I don't know that he would work for the government at all after all of this. Maybe private security, or a private investigator? Unless he just went back to the NYPD. I feel bad for the guy. He genuinely wants to help, but everyone just treats him like crap and then wonders why he doesn't know as much as they do.

Anton had a career that I admire. He did the big fun movies, like Star Trek, but he spent most of his time on smaller movies and living a normal life. I look at people like Clooney or Pitt or most of the people on that level, and they're so unrelatable that they don't even bother acting anymore. They just read lines. I can't see any real actor wanting that sort of life where most of their work is in the tabloids.
When I picture an acting career for myself (which I really don't have enough time for these days), it's more along the lines of Anton Yelchin. He was incredibly well respected and liked by those around him. Steadily working. Produced quality work. Yet, he wasn't one of those actors who was so famous that their movies didn't matter anymore. I like the actors who aren't Hollywood elite d-bags.

Anyway, I think I'm going to hold out for the blu-ray set for BvS. The digital version will be out sooner, but I don't see why I'd pay about as much for the digital version as I would for the blu-ray, dvd, digital combo pack. So I might be a bit behind in viewing the movie again.

Re: DC Superheroes in Film (1943 - 2024) (1,098 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
The thing about the DC movies is that they're embracing different styles of telling stories. Wonder Woman won't necessarily look or feel like Man of Steel. Aquaman won't look like Suicide Squad. Whereas the Marvel movies mostly have an overall look and feel, these movies are unique movies of their own.
What this means is that when the next movie comes along and it's not as moody as Batman v Superman, people are going to go on about how the studio freaked out and made changes. We've already seen that happen. Basically, there is no way for the DC movies to win, because the media covering them has been so Marvel-focused (and depending on who you ask, possibly Disney-funded) that they're going to look for any way to jab DC that they can get. The possible exception will be Wonder Woman, which is why it was smart for them to come out with it so quickly. Wonder Woman might defy the media spin, because the feminism overrules all.
Then again, I've already seen some people complaining that Gal Gadot is Israeli, so there is also that to take into consideration.

1. Don't cheap out on editing. You need to have your novel professionally edited. This is NOT optional.
I agree that editing is important. Making your book readable is absolutely essential. However, I disagree that you have no choice but to spend a ton of money getting that done.
How you get there isn't as important as where you end up. Saying that an author can't make great books without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on editors is like saying that musicians can't make great music without paying someone to polish their recordings. Yes, that help can be useful. But plenty of people are perfectly capable of producing great work using their own methods.

I think they may actually want to do it forever. Both seem to know what they have and appreciate it. The set seems to be a happy one. The network is willing to keep it forever. I think that they will do it until they really feel like it's going down... but we may see more characters added or less episodes per season at some point.
The show started on Tuesday, if I recall correctly. Then it moved to Thursday, with Smallville. Then Friday. Then maybe Tuesday again? Then Wednesday. Now back to Thursday. But it holds up well when moved.

Re: Supernatural (267 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
I think it is because Supernatural does well wherever they put it, and anchors whatever night it is on. Pairing ot with Arrow worked well, but Arrow is at a point where it shouldn't need anyone holding it up anymore. The CW kinda had two anchor shows on the same night.
Of course, I tend to disagree with the "anchor show" theory. I think that you should build a strong night and keep it in place, making the night a part of the show experience. For example, Buffy was a Tuesday show. Deep Space Nine was a Wednesday show. The Pretender was a Saturday show (when that was a thing).

Re: Personal Status Updates! (759 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Buffy Season 8. Many moons ago for me, but it was my biggest fanfic accomplishment. In some ways, it was my biggest writing accomplishment. Not just because it was an insane idea (to release 22 full episode scripts according to a TV show's airing schedule), but because I got a lot of amazing feedback on it. People were inspired to write because of it. People told me that they were using it as teaching tools. One person stole some of it and claimed it as their own when making a fan film... which is still not cool, but it's part of the wacky adventure.
So I know the crazy fanfic mentality. I know it well. The whole season was about taking the incoherent, poorly crafted monstrosity of season 7 and turning into something better, because I loved the show and hated how they ended it. (this is on top of the writer challenge side of it)
When it was all said and done, I had the wacky idea of binding the whole thing together really nicely in an overly elaborate book that looked like some ancient text, and handing it over to Joss Whedon at a convention. Not because I thought he'd keep it, love it, or even open it. But just because it would be a cool element to add to the story of that project for me.
These things are done out of passion for these projects. We're like geeky characters in a sort of road trip movie, learning something about ourselves on the way to some McGuffin destination.
Ultimately, I didn't give it to Joss. I didn't go to the convention with the book in hand, and hand it over. Not because it wouldn't have been cool, but because in the end, I didn't need to. I was disillusioned by Joss by some point and while I think the Joss of 1998 would have gotten the point of the whole thing, I don't think that the Joss of 2003-Present would have. In the end, what I learned about myself through that project, and the amazing feedback that I got from it turned out to be the end of my road trip movie. There was even an exciting chase in the end, as I took down the person who stole my work and a ton of people around the internet stood behind me.
For you, giving Rob that script was the end of the road trip movie. You're visiting the obscure destination that not many people know about and you're leaving your mark. You're showing respect to someone who influenced you by sharing your work with them. Rob does deserve to get some of the weird fan art that scifi people get all the time. He's a part of this adventure and whether he read it or not, I'm sure that he felt good, knowing that whatever fans think of the show while he was on it, his work was still appreciated.
I once sent a copy of my Christmas novella to a few people, because I think that it's cool to share your work with people whose work you appreciate. I never expected anything from it. But a while later, Dean Koontz replied with a lovely letter, a signed book, and a subscription to his newsletter. I don't know if he ever read the book, but he got it. He appreciated it. And yes, he might have thought that I was a ten year old or something (because in my mind, nobody can take me seriously or think of me as an adult... Youngest child syndrome) but it was cool to have an exchange like that with someone whose name has been on bookshelves around me since I was a little kid.
So no. I don't think it's weird or wrong. I think that a creative exchange and expression of appreciation is cool.
And while I haven't read as much of your work as I'd like (my life has been off the rails crazy lately), I did enjoy what I've read. Not only is it good work, but it's obvious that it comes from a love of the show.
I did have a similar issue of wanting to use characters in season 8 that I shouldn't have been able to use, just because I liked them and wanted to honor that. First, Anya. She was dead and I didn't want to ruin it by bringing her back in some half-assed way. So I put in a quiet moment where Xander is looking through his high school yearbook and discovers that Anya had taped a picture of herself in there. It was a bittersweet moment.
And then Cordelia. I hated what they'd done to her on Angel. I always thought she worked better on Buffy. I wanted to send her out properly. So I had this episode where she came into town and interacted with the group in different ways, for different reasons. In the end, it was revealed that she was a ghost, coming to say goodbye to her friends before she moved on.
Imagine how surprised I was when a while after I put the script online (a longer while after I wrote it), Angel's 100th episode aired. Cordelia came out of her coma to interact with friends, only to have it be revealed that she was a ghost, coming back to say her goodbyes before she moved on.

So, Supergirl has cast their Superman. Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf, The Road to Perdition) will play Supes on the show.
He's 28. Which doesn't really work for me. Kara has been on Earth for something like 12 years, right? And Superman was already active when she was found. I know that he doesn't age like everyone else, but still... 28 is a bit young to be playing someone who should be more like 35 or 40. I like the actor just fine, but it seems like a case of casting an actor, rather than casting a character.

Re: The X-Files (423 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Season 8 of The X-Files is a strange thing. It's strange because the show sets itself up to go on for a while, strongly, despite Mulder going missing. Doggett and Reyes are great characters, and the fact that Reyes is more of an occult person than an alien person even sets the show up with a new mythology direction, so it can continue without Mulder or Scully, and not feel like a complete rehash of a tired arc.
All of this is great, but the writers refused to lean into those possibilities. For starters, Doggett and Scully are constantly split up during investigations. This may have been because Gillian Anderson wanted more free time, but it feels like the writers don't want them to develop a real partnership, because it might threaten the Mulder/Scully dynamic. It feels like they're clinging to what worked before, even if what worked is not possible at that point, since Duchovny wanted out.
Then Mulder comes back and rather than allow all of these strong characters to live and work together, there is always this false hostility toward Doggett (and to a lesser degree, Reyes). It doesn't work though, because I find myself siding with Doggett and thinking that Mulder is being a d-bag... Scully is still largely absent from the action, so it's hard to get a feel for her at this point. Is she back to being the skeptic around Mulder? Does she remain the believer? Is she somewhere in the middle? I don't know. She just keeps telling Mulder that Doggett is a good guy and totally worth the effort of getting to know him, but it feels weird, since she has spent so little time in the same room with him.
There is a legitimately good setup for the series moving forward here, but as usual, the X-Files clings to what's safe and familiar and refuses to move on from the past.

Re: Publishing a Book (NSR) (5 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Of course I think it is worth doing. Why have a mostly finished story and not do anything with it?
There is no one way to get it done though. Traditional publishers use editors to shape the story into something that is not only well written, but which hits all of the company's targets for whatever specific reasons. With independent publishing, you aren't beholden to them.
Do you need an "editor"? I've seen it go both ways. Professionals are great at finding issues, spelling errors, etc. But they cost a lot of money, and different types of editing can cost more (story critique and spelling/grammar aren't always covered by the same fee).
If you don't have a lot of money to put into it, finding some really good beta readers can be a great help. Friends and family can be good at pointing out spelling/grammar problems and giving overall feedback. But you have to be careful with who you're asking. Too many friends or family members will want to be nice and not hurt your feelings. Their help can be useful too, but you really need some people who will tell you flat out when they don't like something or when a sentence is worded in a weird way. With the right people helping you, you don't necessarily need to pay an editor and you can save your money for promoting the work or getting nice cover art.
But be careful becuse those who work for free have other things to do. You need to give them a lot of time to get things done.
Also, make sure that they review your book! Reviews, both good and bad, make a huge difference. You want as many as possible, but they are hard to get. Once you have ten or more reviews, a whole new level of promoting options opens up. But those first reviews are the hardest to get.

Re: Girl Meets World (4 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Ha! For a second there, I thought this was going to go a whole different direction.
I do get that it is a kid show, and you can't really dig into politics. But there is a strong lesson to be learned about responsibility and consequences. Money doesn't grow on trees. If you give here, you take from there. I don't think that is too complicated for this aidience. And a lot of kids around the world would be thrilled to "just" have basic education.
The same lessons could be applied to the senatorial campaign. The kids were saying that if they could vote, they would feed everyone, clothe everyone and shelter everyone. They get to believe that because they are kids. They don't get that sometimes, adults have to make hard choices, not because they want to, but because they don't have a choice. Sometimes war is needed, but only the insane would want it to happen. Sometimes we can't provide for everyone. We just can't.
Which goes perfectly with the episode where Shawn buys Maya the new clothes, because they made a point of saying that her mother couldn't always do the fun stuff, because she had to keep the lights on. That same lesson could be applied to the other episodes... but it wasn't. Instead, they went in the opposite direction. Want, take, have (as Faith the vampire slayer would say).
Putting aside political beliefs, I think these are just basic facts of life. If Cory had run through a mock election, letting the kids vote and then explained how those votes could have dire consequences, it would have been a stronger lesson about the responsibility that we have as citizens.

Topic: Girl Meets World (4 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Since I don't want to take over another thread with talk of this show, I started a new topic.
Okay, I watched the show for the sake of nostalgia. I watched Boy Meets World growing up, so I wanted to see where Cory and Topanga were now. Then... I got addicted to this silly little kid show. It is sappy, optimistic and joyful, so it is a nice show to turn on after a long day of being dark, gloomy old me (still don't know where I got that reputation).
That said, some of the lessons on the show are pretty horrible. Explaining elections is fine, but arguing for lowering the voting age without teaching kids why voting is for adults is just sloppy.
Then I just watched an episode where arts programs are being cut and the kids face off against the evil adults who want to cut them. They win in the end, but I still don't like the lesson. In the real world, money has to come from somewhere. Hard decisions have to be made, whether we like them or not. Keeping arts programs might mean taking money from books, school suppies or even food for less privileged kids.
I know it is a kid show, but why tell these stories dishonestly? It is a bad lesson at that point.
On another note, Will Friedle is still funny as heck. This is hard to accomplish with such an over the top character.

I think Uncle Eric would agree.
I prefer Batman Beyond too. TDKR was an okay read, using known characters in a completely unrelated story and context. But in terms of the characters we know and follow regularly, it isn't great. But The Watchmen would probably not be a good book for seventh graders.
I do think that there are many graphic novels that are as valid as any novel. There is a weird idea that novels are all smart, and comic books, movies and tv shows can't be. It is a weird notion to me.

I was watching Girl Meets World today (give me a break, okay? I like the nostalgia and the show is kinda funny) and came up to an episode in season 2 where a new teacher comes in and teaches the kids Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns as an introduction to good vs evil and the complexities of the concept.
At first, I chuckled because it is a Disney show, going to Batman vs Superman to tell their story. But it was actually an interesting question, for a kid show. Is it valid to teach graphic novels as literature and to use comic book characters to explore the spectrum of good vs evil?
The episode reminded me of the debate over the movie, though the episode aired last July.
The episode before it was horrible though. It was all about politics and getting kids involved, but it is a kid show so they never explained why their big political ideas (like "provide everything for everyone!") would actually destroy our way of life. But that is a different discussion.

I see a lot of people saying that Lena sounds like Tess Mercer. Nobody seems to remember that Tess was Lena in the end (Lutessa Lena Luthor).
They really want Calista back, but she will probably not be in every episode. One of thw regulars is probably going to pick up the slack from her character. I would expect Chyler to take a smaller role too, since she has a family.
The other three are recurring, so I don't think they're filling any holes necessarily.

Was he? I like Routh, but I thought he was the wrong choice for that role. But then, it was a thankless job since everything else about that movie was so horrible.

I just think that it would be more fun to see him play something different. Tom is a great Clark/Superman, but I think he is more likely to appear on the show as something else. He has played that character already, and on a better show. I would love to see his Clark show up in the multiverse, but I don't think it would be as fulfilling to see him play the same character, but not. I want to see Tom, Erica and Allison together again, but not just playing vaguely similar versions of the characters that I spent a decade with. And by the end he owned that character in ways that he wouldn't here.
For Supergirl, why not let Tom flex his muscles and play something new? He could play a different type of hero, or even a villain. Maybe a love interest for Alex? A fun loving pilot with a sarcastic personality.

Having Tom play Superman would be weird. Kara doesn't just look different. His Kara looks like Indigo. His Lara looks like Eliza Danvers. His Curtis Knox (who was pretty much Vandal Savage) looks like Jeremiah Danvers. Jimmy Olsen is suddenly black. Cat Grant, Lucy Lane and the General have new faces.
Having Tom play the role would force them to explain that he is Clark, but not Smallville's Clark... or they would need a huge exposition scene to try to make it work somehow. Plus, we would then be wondering when Erica would show up, or Allison. It would be easier to just give him another character to play. Maybe someone who could cross over to the other shows if he were interested.
I was thinking that it might be cool to go with an older Clark, but that wouldn't line up with the ages of Lucy or Jimmy. I really don't know who would he a good choice. I would have to think about that.
It would be cool to see Chloe Sullivan pop up. Not played by Allison Mack, but someone new. To solidify her place in the Superman universe. Maybe Winn could date her.

Superman is apparently going to make a full appearance on Supergirl, in the first two episodes of season 2. People are already calling for Tom Welling, but I think that is the wrong role for him.
I wonder if they really are shipping Kara off to Earth 1, and getting this out of tye way while they can.

That's funny, about the script length. My brother recently asked me if I intentionally made most of my book's chapters ten pages long. And I don't, really. I have no problem with chapters being way more or way less than ten pages, but somehow, having set a goal of ten pages per day, my mind paces scenes that way.
For these books anyway. In other books, chapters can be upwards of fifty pages.

The beginning of the movie wasn't too bad. I was wondering why it was as hated as it was. But after the time jump, it was like the ongoing story was dropped and the climax of some other movie was tacked onto the end. It quickly became a confused, sloppy jumble of a movie that had no purpose to it.

Exactly. If the movie is good, people won't care if it's a half hour longer. I could see holding off on the 4 hour version, but a three hour movie isn't horribly long.

That's kinda funny.
Maybe you were recreating that scene on a subconscious level before you realized what you were doing. Somewhere in your brain, that situation was linked to that reaction.

This cut should have been in theaters. The studio was stupid for trying to get the PG-13 rating and limit the minutes instead of telling the story properly. I hate when they do that.

I really do hope that you guys can like the movie more and see what I see in it. I'm just not getting my hopes up.
Though I do think that a second viewing will help, even without new footage. It is becoming a mythical beast in the retellings

I am looking forward to its return too, even though I thought the revival was very weak (at least half of it was, if not more). I like having it around, they just really need Chris Carter gone.

I think the Watchmen extended cut developed a following of its own. And Blade Runner had a well known director's cut, didn't it?
I wouldn't expect the deleted scenes to make it a new movie though. It will expand on the ideas that are already present, but if you didn't like the movie before, I doubt you will now.

Jena Malone looks like Cat Grant in the trailer, but with Cat on Supergirl, I doubt it's her.

I have reached the Doggett era in my rewatch. I had always remembered liking the character, but thought that I would see weaknesses in the show after Mulder left that perhaps I didn't see before.
Oddly enough, I don't. I find Doggett to be refreshing. He is a skeptic, but with an open mind. He isn't a blind follower of his bosses, but he also isn't as quick as Mulder to throw aside his duty. It is a nice change of pace. He should get a lot more credit as a character than he does. Too bad that we haven't seen more of him. I imagine him going back to police work in his home city, after getting sick of all of this federal conspiracy crap.
Still haven't seen Reyes' episodes yet. Something to look forward to, despite the fact that I didn't like what the revival did to her.

That is interesting. What I always found funny was that in emergency situations, everything could be done by voice command. The helm, weapons, environmental systems and all of it could be controlled by voice when they needed to. So most of the crew is just for show.

Okay, let's say that (just for the fun of imagining) the Arrow writers used the Flash finale to fix their show. They come back and the past two seasons are replaced with a new history that we get in dialog and flashbacks.
Do we rejoice and go with it, or would that be more bad writing?

All true. However, Captain America only recently achieved a level of pop culture status, outside of the comic book fan community. It's still a relatively new relationship that he has with those people who came on board with the movies.
The story may be valid. We all know that it will eventually be undone (though some out there may not be aware of such things). But it is a risky move, to violate the character's core purpose in such a way. It has made for some bad press already.
I did know about Connor... which could lead me on a rant about the Arrow writers once again showing their lack of appreciation for the source material. But I won't do that.
At any rate, there is something that we might both finally agree on when it comes to comic book movies. X-Men Apocalypse.
Looks horrible. Didn't perform too well. I am not a fan of the X-Men movies in general, unless you count Deadpool.

Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe by Slider_Quinn21 (929 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
I just mean, Captain America has always been used as a symbol. That is how they have always wanted him to be seen, from the moment he punched Hitler in the face. He was the embodiment of what every American wished they could be. That's why people use him as the image they post on Memorial Day.
For that reason, I think it was bad timing. By this time next year, I'm sure everything will be fine. But right now, it sparked a lot of comments and I think it added to the negative feeling toward the story.
You know I'm not someone who thinks that every story should be safe an happy, or that every story should even make the audience feel good in the end (you've read my work!). I just think that the character needs to live up to their purpose. Cap's purpose for being is to be a symbol. I think that's why there has been so many negative reactions to this.

But how far do you take that? Right now, we have integrated our "communicators" with our "PADDs". Should they do that on the show? Should they do away with big computer interfaces on their desks?

Re: Supernatural (267 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
I finally got around to watching the finale this past weekend and I think it did some things really well, but it wasn't 100% great.
For starters, Amara was a problem this season. I don't think that she was a 22 episode villain. A lot of what was done with her seemed like stalling, and in doing that, they kinda repeated the Lilith storyline a bit. She was also a vague villain, so it was hard to grasp onto what she was, what she wanted, what she felt, etc. The show thrives in urban legends and using established myths to fuel their show. This was an attempt to retcon the Bible, and while they have succeeded with that a bit in the past, this one was a little too big and a little too scattered. I'm not sure that Amara worked as what she was supposed to be.
The same character could have been some completely different force that was designed to destroy creation. A fail safe or whatever. The "God's sister" thing... I don't know.
I liked a lot of about the last four episodes, but I feel like they could have accomplished all of that good stuff in one or two episodes, rather than four. There was a lot of sitting and talking and shaking of fists. Last week felt epic, until everyone who went up against Amara survived for no good reason. Crowley and Rowena should have died, along with Lucifer. They should have cleaned house and made this a big deal. But it wasn't. In the finale, most of the characters were sitting in a bar, doing nothing at all.
And I think that Chuck would have been better served as a character by keeping him limited to two episodes, rather than four. As it is, I'm left wondering if it was worth the reveal. Was it worth having them go as far as they could go, and removing the biggest mystery in the universe to the guys? They're drinking buddies with God, so where do they go now? The push and pull on that subject, with Sam believing and Dean's anger fueled disbelief, was an interesting element.
As it was, I guess the storyline resolved the best way it could have. It just wasn't something that could have been resolved very well.
Meanwhile, I'm kinda wondering why the cage in Hell shouldn't be opened and tossed out now. Should Michael and Adam remain in Lucifer's prison cell forever?
The parts that set up next season were interesting. While the "upper class" element rarely works for Supernatural (big business Leviathans, for example), it is a contrast to the hunter world that the guys have always lived in. It's interesting to have a human element as the main threat, and a very personal danger, rather than a global danger. I like that they're cutting way back in that regard. And the Men of Letters have a legitimate issue with the Winchesters. We can't say that the MoL are really "bad guys" when they're trying to take out the dudes who have nearly caused the end of the world several times over by now. I like that they don't have a mustache-twirling villain. This could be cool.
Mary coming back is interesting. Do we know for sure that it's *just* Mary, or was she just the first person that Dean saw? Did Amara just want to give him back what had been taken from him as a child, or did she want to give back what had been taken from him all along the road? Are other characters fair game here? Do we want that much death to be undone? I'm honestly torn. On the one hand, I like consequences and for death to stick. On the other hand, it could be fun to see Sam, Dean, John, Mary, Bobby, Ellen and Jo facing off against a bunch of Men of Letters. Mary was a hunter, after all.
So I liked it. Overall, I think it was a strong season. However, the main arc of the season had issues. And I still don't like that Crowley, Rowena and even Castiel are sticking around.

So if it is set in the original timeline and in various periods, do you think that they will try to modernize the look and feel of the show? Or will they attempt to recreate the look and feel of what came before? Do we want them to go for the 1991 hair if they're telling a TNG-era story?
Part of me says no and that would just be like fanfic... but part of me says yes. We know that the tech isn't as futuristic as it once seemed and the overall look was really dated, but we like it anyway. It's familiar and comfortable.
On the other hand, we want the Trek universe to be taken seriously. So, how should it be handled?

I will post about Supernatural in a bit (typing with my thumbs now) but I wanted to point out an example of the bad publicity surrounding the Cap/Hydra decision.
Today is Memorial Day. People are honoring those who gave their lives for our country and our freedom . I saw a post from Dallas Comic Con using an image of Captain America at a grave, to serve as their way of remembering... and the replies were "Hail Hydra".
We all know that it will be reset and the story may end up being great, but they needed to weigh it against the image that they want to put out there. Especially around Memorial Day, because so many people use him as their way for geeks to honor those who have fallen.
At the very least, it's release was timed poorly.

Back off, Mallory. I'm not in the mood for your crap.
Stuff like that.
I've had similar issues, just in terms of having stories that revolve around lies and deception. Different characters contradicting each other can be hard to follow at times, if you're not paying attention.
