Mark Snow was 78 years old and had a wide-spanning career and effectively became an industry standard from his name and his name only for orchestral-based music. He lived a full life. Musically, he accomplished everything and more that any scoring artist in TV and film could hope for. The name Mark Snow is synonymous with excellent music for TV and film.

Compare that to, say, David Peckinpah and Bill Dial, who are industry cautionary tales who set no meaningful standard of anything and died relatively young, with Peckinpah's disease of affection leading to his end.

I don't love THE X-FILES... but it's an interesting show! I am more a student of the show than a fan. It's interesting to see where TV was back in the 90s and how THE X-FILES was the standardmaker at the cutting edge of the medium for a time. And we wouldn't have FRINGE and SUPERNATURAL without THE X-FILES.

I think Coogler could make anything work.

I think conspiracies are a whole lot less fun post-MAGA because they're completely mainstream instead of being funny and fringey.  But I think you could do a show and instead of aliens maybe you do something with Artificial Intelligence.  Maybe Mulder believes that some kind of AI has started taking over the world, and he has to get to the bottom of things.

Or do aliens.  Aliens are still in the culture and are relevant.

It's quite an interview.  Chris mentioned he will be meeting David and Gillian Dec. 1 (guess this was recorded a month ago).  Lots of other interesting stuff too.

As Chris Carter told the X-Cast in his last interview that they should do more of them, somehow, I doubt this will be the last of the X-Cast.

One thing that heartens me about SLIDERS: Still many podcasts going on about it.  Probably 6-8 right now.  That's incredible.

That's too bad he keeps getting delayed. I hope it comes out.

I'm on season 7 of my rewatch, the last full season before David Duchovny leaves. I think this time I'll have a greater appreciation for Doggett. I think David Duchovny could have carried the X-Files on his own. He's that good in my opinion. Maybe I'll finish everything before the reboot.

I do wish the reboot/revival or whatever the Ryan Coogler project well, but I guess I'm trying not to get my hopes up because, after the BUFFY reboot was not ordered to series, I am reminded that a pilot is not a series.

I would think if Jerry had been more aggressive/willing, him-cleavant-john would be able to do panels fairly regularly and it might actually make the small "hardcore" fanbase slightly larger.

That is eerie and beautiful and ridiculous.

I hope the new X-FILES pilot is good and leads to a series.

My understanding is that it is set in the same continuity as the original show, but features new characters taking over the X-Files.

I should note: while my understanding is that the new series is a revival and set some time after Mulder and Scully moved on from the bureau, my understanding could be a misunderstanding. I don't know for a fact that Coogler isn't executing a day one continuity reboot. I assumed, from his talks with Gillian Anderson, that it was continuing from the original series and with a time gap and some distance from the Syndicate and Colonization, especially when the logline specifies that the new series is about two highly decorated FBI agents assigned to the "long-shuttered" division that is the X-Files.

However, it could easily be revealed that in this continuity, the X-Files has existed since 1776 at the dawn of America as a secret investigative operation that saw its prestige and influence erode over centuries until it fell into the hands of federal storage where it was technically a division because a federal agent signed off on burying it in the basement, and that's what "long-shuttered" means.

Yea, I don't think Ryan Coogler would destory a universe he loved but like Rocky/Creed, continue it.  Not many people have the pull he does in hollywood to do a contiuation and get it greenlit but he's so respected.

It was just announced that X Files: I Want to Believe (2008) is having its newly edited, more horror-oriented director's cut come to hulu in August.  Chris talked about this in one of the podcast interviews.

Gillian Anderson reopens the X-Files

I have no doubl it could be more horror oriented with edits (which is what he claimed in the podcast interview he was prevented from being able to do the first time around).  Tone isn't the hardest thing to adjust even if words stay the same.  I always liked the movies but as a "casual-hardcore" X-Files fan who was into the characters and didnt pay close attention to the mythology / cannon, I am easier to please.

I'd see that movie!

Okay, so I just watched Vrach Frankenshteyn and Chris Carter and his editor have taken a movie that was incredibly slow, boring, devoid of threat or danger, and culminating in Mulder spending the climax crawling on a floor while Scully defeats the villain with one blow to the face and Skinner intimidates the rest at gunpoint and the situation is declared resolved without risk, struggle or sacrifice, and in their re-edits, they have produced... pretty much the same movie as before, but with a faster pace to the editing, shots that are sped up via frame removal, scenes that are hastened by omitting the long pauses and nearly every moment of Mulder/Scully romance, and trimming out nearly any and all characterization.

The movie still seems to be missing some key points of characterization like a final and on-camera farewell to Father Joe (his last scene was scripted and shot but cut from the theatrical version and still absent in this one). The new edit has has even less characterization for the already personality-starved Dakota Whitney, and it still ends with Mulder and Scully discussing an administrative matter of whether Father Joe should be exonerated of one of the 38 crimes of which he is accused.

It's interesting: while the leaden pace of the original film is removed, removing flaws doesn't seem to make the movie better, just less tedious. "Not as boring as the original" is, I suppose, high praise for Chris Carter these days.

Anyway. I myself have been writing a director's cut of an X-Files story I conceived in 2016.

The X-Files: Reborn

Instead of "My Struggle," we start in 2016 with "Reborn." We have Mulder and Scully just as they were in the Revival: Mulder living alone, Scully a doctor, both of them amicably broken up. Earth doesn't seem to have been Colonized. In my version, Mulder and Scully meet up once a month for lunch. We join them for their latest meetup and they have a weird conversation where Scully talks about how she's so distant from the world of investigating aliens now that she forgets that she believes in them.

Mulder says that believing or disbelieving in them makes no difference anymore. We hint that SOMETHING happened on December 22, 2012 -- and this uninvaded Earth is the outcome.

Skinner calls. He needs help. There's been a series of brutal murders. The killer painted on the walls in the victims' blood, writing ALIEN CONSPIRATOR, HUMAN COLLABORATOR and TRAITOR. Mulder, an 'expert' in alien conspiracies, is rehired by the FBI to look into it and Mulder makes it a condition that Scully's rehired too. They begin investigating.

The victims are FEMA employees, bureaucrats at the Mount Weather military complex, people who worked in the Strughold Mining Company, the Galpex Corporation -- and Mulder realizes: all these people were part of the Syndicate's plan to pave the way for Colonization in 2012. The killer is targeting conspirators whom he hates for selling out the human race.

The killer takes a Strughold Mining office hostage and threatens to blow himself and the employees up unless the conspirators show themselves. Mulder is sent in to negotiate. He tells the killer: the lead conspirators are all dead now. The killer's been pointlessly targeting their support staff. The killer insists that Colonization must have started in 2012, covertly and secretly.

Mulder says the aliens are not coming. The killer asks why. Mulder says its' because of the X-Files.

Flashback to 2012. Mulder and Scully are running around the woods, hunted by Billy Miles and Knowle Rohrer. Confronted by the Smoking Man (probably a supersoldier with his face) declaring the end has come, it could not have ended any other way. A light in the sky is descending upon them. The CSM says it is the first to herald the rest and Mulder will accept his place now as nothing and Scully can watch as the human race dies.

The light descends to ground level behind some trees and then someone emerges from the woods. 

It is Bill Nighy in a business suit.

Mulder, Scully, the supersoldiers and the CSM gape. 

"Errrm. Hello, all," says Bill. "So sorry to disappoint, I know you expected a bigger to-do, but it's just me. Yes, yes. Ah, if the ground staff would disperse, there's no need for any of this, thanks." 

The CSM looks on in dismay as the supersoldiers walk off without a word.

"And Agents Mulder and Scully," says Bill. "Thank you for your diligence and care in assembling these records, these summaries, these 'X-Files.'" Bill holds up a thick file folder. "I apologize that... well, Purity is a very busy operation, we don't get around to reading every transmission beamed into space, but this has certainly been in the queue, yes."

Scully looks at Mulder and Mulder awkwardly explains that, for posterity, he transmits the X-Files digital records into space.

"Yes, good work, both of you. Very detailed, very thorough, and upon reviewing everything you've documented, we've decided, well, this Colonization business -- it's just not our business after all."

"What!?" the CSM sputters. "You can't call it off!"

"Look here!" Bill snaps. "We didn't resurrect you as a supersoldier just to take your guff! And let me tell you: this entire planet seems to us to be a veritable bill of goods! We're a biotechnology focused species. We do genetic colonization on a cellular level and we operate on procedures and protocols that adapt to meet biological challenges. We do not engage with the brand of peculiarity we're seeing on your planet in these casefiles. What even is a Tooms or a Flukeman? What is El Chubacabra and why would we colonize that? What is this Cops TV show? The demon Azazel? What would Ronnie Strickland do to our biology? We're scientists and engineers! We don't play around with super intelligent water or Bermuda Triangles or the anthropomorphic representation of death or anything involving this absurdity you call 'God.' We don't even have a coherent sense of how your species resurrects across eight separate cases and two of those are ours! Thanks but no thanks. This soul eater of yours? You can keep it. No, so sorry. This was all a mistake. We'll find another planet that doesn't operate on bizarre metaphorical 'rules' that seem to shift or be replaced with each casefile, all of which defy any system of information management. We apologize for the quality of this translation. We had difficulty finding the appropriate avatar for a message of this nature. We've also sent this same message to the other world manipulating conspiracy group, the Millennium people, we get you two confused. Agent Mulder, fondest regards for warning us off. Be well."

Bill walks into the woods. A light flies out of the trees and into the sky and is gone.

We cut back to the present. The killer doesn't believe Mulder and triggers the countdown on his bomb vest; Mulder successfully overpowers him and pulls him away from the hostages and locks the killer in a steel vault filled with Syndicate artifacts. Mulder dives out of the vault and lets the door shut as the explosion consumes the killer and all that is left of Colonization on Earth, sparing Mulder and the hostages.

Mulder and Scully prepare to leave the FBI and return to their post-X-Files lives only to discover that in the 14 years since they left, there've been a sizable number of new cases with potential monsters of the week.

They realize that even without aliens, the X-Files still remain with many cases left to investigate...

funny.  so this is a way to revive and reboot.
