Supergirl movie?

https://deadline.com/2018/08/supergirl- … 202440687/

Looks like WB is back grasping at what they already have instead of moving forward.  If they’re looking for a back door Superman reboot, they should take us to the 30th century Legion of Super-Heroes and look back at a new history.  Marvel is owning cosmic at the moment, but Legion gives the opportunity to play with new ground in time travel - especially if the Time Trapper is involved.

It would also serve to beat Marvel to the punch for once instead of chasing behind them.  Now that Disney has Fox, they’ve got the rights back to Fantastic Four and Kang the Conqueror.  You can bet time travel is about to be a big component in Marvel movies.

Glad to see Trek lore moving forward again, but I really wonder what this Picard series could even be about.  Maybe in retirement he focuses on archeology and finds something?  Kind of like his mentor did in that episode?  Of course, if they go with the tie-in comic to the Abrams reboot, then Picard is now the earth ambassador to Vulcan (probably a lingerng aspect of the Sarek meld leading him there).

Going down the channel guide and stopped on Universal Kids for a second.  A commercial was playing for their various shows, and suddenly they showed a quick image of a guy in normal clothes jumping into a blue, Sliders type vortex.  The name of the show was not given, but I believe it’s going to be an Australian series called Nowhere Boys:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowhere_Boys

The series is about four boys who are transported to a parallel world just like their world except  they have no doubles (they never existed).  Apparently from there it goes into some kind of magic / fantasy type show which I’m not interested in.

I continue to be amazed to see that little blue vortex popping up out there; and once again with four travelers lost from home.

If I was looking down the channel guide and saw “Shooting the Shit with Jerry O’Connell” - well hell, I’ve got to see what *that* show is like.

Obviously there’s more than one Robert Weiss in the world; and this is most probably some other Robert Weiss (I notice the Weiss law firm is noted at the end of the filing).  But could this be our Robert K Weiss (co-creator of Sliders)?  There would be an interesting dynamic at play if it was.

Comcast Universal is competing with Disney to buy the Fox assets; and word around the industry has been that Comcast Universal wants to up their bid, but they could need some more time.  This lawsuit is tailor-made to delay the Disney / Fox vote that would approve the merger.  It would buy Comcast Universal time.

Why would Weiss get involved?  Maybe a bit of quid pro quo. Comcast Universal has an interest in Sliders; maybe they would agree to help Weiss if he helped them.

It’s surely just a big coincidence that the guy’s name is Robert Weiss, but I found it an amusing thought.

https://deadline.com/2018/07/bravo-andy … 202422984/

Each episode will feature O’Connell, alongside a panel of male celebrities, comics and tastemakers, discussing the buzziest Bravo moments and a variety of topics steeped in pop culture.

The description per Bravo: O’Connell “From offering advice to The Real Housewives from every franchise to taking sides on some of the most controversial Bravo feuds, Jerry is truly a walking encyclopedia of Bravo history. Real Men Watch Bravo will offer unprecedented access to the male point of view pertaining to all things Bravo and entertainment. Whether realizing they were a die-hard Vanderpump Rules fan after being introduced to the sizzling series by their girlfriends or learning how to cook the perfect filet from binging Top Chef episodes for hours, these men are unapologetic Bravoholics and hope to encourage others to step out of the shadows and admit what some have known all along…Real Men Watch Bravo.”

I think I first became aware of the Torme story from an old forumite named AlternityOrange; and subsequently saw it mentioned in several other places.  Just on a glance today, I see it mentioned on this questionable site:

http://www.jamescamerononline.com/Ellison.htm

To be honest, the story didn’t cross my mind often except as an occasional trivia to some other conversation (such as how it came to mind today); I’m just not a big Terminator fan.  So, I never asked Torme about it; it wasn’t something on my mind the times I talked with him.  I would definitely defer to your Torme conversations.

As mentioned in the article, we would probably not have The Terminator without Harlan Ellison; and the reason we know that is because of our own Tracy Torme.

The story goes that Torme was visiting the set of the first Terminator when it was filming, and he asked James Cameron where he got the idea.   Cameron allegedly responded with a flippant brag along the lines of “Oh, I just ripped off a couple of Harlan Ellison stories”.  The stories in question were Harlan’s Outer Limits episodes “Soldier” and “Demon with a Glass Hand”.

After hearing of the exchange, Harlan pursued it and was given an acknowledgement in the credits of subsequent Terminator releases as part of a settlement.

Harlan Ellison had a big impact on science fiction, but I do wish he got more recognition for the pop icon that probably wouldn’t exist without him.  In any case, Harlan was a fighter to the end; a big voice was lost with his passing.

If the series make it six more years, we’re likely to have a merger of realities down to just one earth.  The “Red Skies” headline from the 2024 newspaper in Flash season one is a reference to Crisis on Intinite Earths where Flash sacrificed his life to save earth (the red skies being “the bleed” - normally the space between parallel earths that was seen in Crisis because the barriers between realities were breaking down).

Of course, the CW shows could choose to ignore all of that and do whatever.

Enh.  I feel they are retreading a bit of ground there.  With Earth X, we just had oppressive government Supergirl; I don’t see where this will be different enough (even though there are differences).

There are just so many more Supergirl / Superman stories to visit.  For instance, a Supergirl version of the sand Superman story:

http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Sand_Superman_(Earth-One)

It is interesting in that the villain naturally becomes Superman the more it absorbs until you can’t tell the difference between the two both physically and mentally.  In a 1990’s re-telling, they even created a Wrong Arturo situation where a cataclysmic fight at the Fortress left you not sure which Superman survived (something that seemed designed as an escape hatch for the Superman marriage - maybe Lois married the sand creature and not the real Superman).

There would definitely be a season worth to mine out of that, and it would be an interesting look at self sacrifice.

Back in 2011, I went to a convention where most of the TNG cast was there.  During the big panel, Michael Dorn (Worf) began talking about Trek technology.  Dorn mentioned how one day, not long before that panel, he was at his home reading something on his iPad, and he had a sudden realization.  He was now holding in his hand a real version of the fake pads they used to pass around on the Enterprise.  The future happened.

Trek just used to be more thoughtful about things; it gave people something to aspire to (which directly or indirectly led to innovation in the real world).  I think that’s one of the big things missing.  It takes visionaries to pull that off, though; and I don’t think we’ve had many of those connected with Trek in a long time.  Creators have been following technology instead of blazing ahead of it.

I do have to say, though - watch this video and tell me if you think she’s acting or not:

I say that because it’s not even good acting.  It’s like in Superman 2 when Superman is pleading for people’s lives, but it looks like Christopher Reeve is about to break out laughing.

There’s probably a few minor revisions I’ll make first.  I’ll send you that when I can.

Patrick Stewart is getting a bit long in the tooth, but could still be great.   I would just like to see something move the overall narrative forward instead of more prequels.

When thinking in terms of a proposal, I put focus on something we often overlook - how do you sell it?  And the more I thought on that, I came to realize the best way to sell it is by appreciating why I bought into it in the first place.  So I stopped looking at how to fix Sliders; I just looked at why I liked it.

While the comics proposals were a collection of ideas with some sample art, I took it further in 2008 when SL4ever proposed on this forum the idea of a fan film.  It would be bare bones budget with likely no access to the actors (at best the possibility of one); and I was inspired to write a full script for it.  It was new characters; new situations; and served as a continuation but in more of a Next Generation context.  It was again a creation of something I would like to watch; something I would buy.  And in the end, I really love it.

With no fan film materializing, I had considered making a bare bones online comic adaptation of the script (like the pencils only “The Ten Doctors”), but it just never came together.  The last few years have been especially difficult since my father’s stroke that left him unable to take care of himself; my time just seems to evaporate.

I think I’ll go ahead and just put the script out there for any interested.  It will take some time to get it into a presentable format on PDF, but maybe it will bring back something of what you loved about the series.  It’s called “Sliders: Declassified”.

Looks like some bottle episodes in the future!   Don’t look out the window this week; we can’t even afford the black curtain and Christmas lights!

The point at which a film makes a profit is mysterious, and most studios manipulate the numbers enough to claim publically that no film ever made profit.  The modern rule of thumb seems to be that a film must make three times the production budget to just break even.

Once again, TF was way ahead of the curve.  Not exactly right but close enough.

They threw a curve on this one because Nora is a brand new character that’s never appeared anywhere.  In the comics, Barry and Iris had a boy and a girl set of twins, Don and Dawn.  Once their speed powers developed, they were called the Tornado Twins.  Dawn would end up having a daughter (Jenni pictured above), and Don would have a son (Bart Allen).

The interesting thing about Don is his wife - he married Meloni Thawne.  Bart is a descendant of both Flash and Reverse Flash.  The CW show has made it complicated to play with that idea, but they may still find a way.

So why different?  The show has done this before by starting out different (such as the red chest insignia), but finding their way back to the original comics ideas in the end.  Maybe Nora is designed as a throw away.  We’ll get to know her and like her, and then she’ll have to be erased from history to make things right.  Later we meet Barry’s grand daughter Jenni who looks just like Nora (the genes are still there), and it’s a somewhat happy ending because a piece of Nora still lives on.

Hi all,

Just wondering if you know of a site or know where Sliders was filmed when it was in Los Angeles ? I am going to LA in june to attend E3 Expo and I wanted if I could visit some of those sites....

Just wondering...

You would burn most of a day doing it and it probably costs more than most would like to spend (especially with the small amount of time you spend on the backlot); but the main source of locations is available through the VIP walking tour of the Universal Studios back lot.

https://m.universalstudioshollywood.com … -overview/

I went a few years ago, and I really enjoyed it even though over half your time will be spent also getting front line access to the theme park rides and attractions.  Walking those streets where the Chandler facade used to be gave a lot of perspective, though.  That facade (rebuilt after the back lot fire) does not look like the Chandler any longer, but it’s located on a street beside the Back to the Future clock tower building.

During the tour, you walk in front of the clock tower building into a small alley (where several of the season four promo photos were taken), and the old Chandler was located directly in front of you on the right corner as you walk out of the alley.  Strangely enough, they built a new facade that looks like an updated version of the Chandler, but it’s on the corner to your left as you walk out that alley.  It’s almost like someone got the blueprints backwards.

The other thing I found interesting was the tour guide information on other projects that have filmed on that street since Sliders wrapped for the last time.  In Captain America: The First Avenger, Chris Evans is running down the Chandler street when chasing the Hydra agent that disrupted the procedure that transformed Steve Rogers into a super soldier.  The Chandler street was used in the Amazing Spider-man when Andrew Garfield found Uncle Ben shot.  Also at the end of the street starts a cobble stone section that was used in the first Pirates of the Carribean film where Sparrow has his sword fight with Will Turner (some of the same areas used in Sliders episodes like season five’s “Heavy Metal”).

Another aspect of the Universal tour was that they took you onto a soundstage and let you walk through a standing set.  At that time, it was the house from the NBC series “Parenthood”.  Not sure what it would be now, but the Chandler Hotel interior was a standing set during Sliders filming and would have likely been used in the tour had the walking tour been available back then.  It was still a nice perspective on what a standing set would be like on their sound stages.

I also took the walking tour of the Warner Brothers backlot while I was in Hollywood. It wasn’t quite as good as the Universal tour (even though I did get to see the set of The Big Bang Theory), but I still got to see the area where they filmed Sliders season three’s “State of the Art”.  And of course the old Daily Planet facade used in the Dean Cain Superman series.  Overall, the Warner tour was more focused on their complete history in film (from the James Cagney gangster movies to the areas used on the Waltons all the way to areas used in Dukes of Hazard and Gilmore Girls).

I wanted to take the Paramount back lot tour as well (which was the home of Star Trek), but time didn’t allow.

Flash finale was okay but not great.  I wish that Harrison Wells could get away from the “being stupid” thing, but looks like we’re stuck with it.

The only interesting thing was Nora’s comment when she first walked in the house - “This house is bitchin’!”  Back at the start of the season, Cisco thought he had cracked the code of the symbols Barry was writing after he got back from the speed force, but Cisco gave up on it when the translation was “this house is bitchin”.  So we’ve got a connection now; Barry was trying to tell them about the future.

Harry was writing more of those symbols on the board during the blackout.  What was Harry trying to tell them?

I’m also curious - did Ralph keep all those extra powers?  They were in his body after all.

Well, I think the difference is that the Obama backlash wasn’t given as much of a voice.  The majority of the media talks about the horror of Trump 24/7; I think Twitter is moderating comments differently than they do with other topics (they probably consider it balance for allowing Trump to say whatever on his Twitter account); etc.

There was just as much vilification of Obama and Hillary; that’s part of the reason Trump got elected.  We just weren’t hearing those people’s voices until they spoke out at the ballot box.

It’s also worth noting that one of Batwoman’s most notable storylines in modern comics concerns the Crime Bible:

What’s notable there is its connection to Bruno Mannheim, Apokolips and Darkseid.

The Question also has a history with Batwoman; well, the Renee Montoya Question.

Thinking in terms of Supergirl, Batman could make an appearance without stealing the show. I think the easiest way to do this would be to use Batman’s anti-social aspect - it’s not that the CW is trying to keep Batman in the background but instead that Batman *wants* to be in the background.

I think the bigger thing here is the potential access to more prominent Batman villains. With Supergirl fighting Metallo, could Arrow face off with Clayface?  Using the Supergirl model, Joker would likely be off the table like Lex seemingly is; but what about Penguin?  Bane?  Scarecrow?  There’s a lot of options.

From the little I’ve seen, it’s kind of vague.  They are name dropping heroes like Vixen, but the way they talk it could be a reference to a person or a reference to a story they read (like a comic book).  Not sure how likely a true crossover is, though.  Black Lightning films in Atlanta with everyone else in Vancouver.  Same problem with Titans and Doom Patrol as they film in Toronto.

Looks like the Berlanti Titans series is getting something to crossover with - Doom Patrol:

The classic Doom Patrol Line-up with the addition of Crazy Jane (who is basically the X-men character Legion - each of her multiple personalities has a different power).  Of course, I guess it balances out in the end given that X-men was kind of a rip off of Doom Patrol (with the Patrol debuting in June 1963 and X-men in September 1963).

If it were me, I would take a page from what they’re doing with the rest of the movies this year.  Ant-man is set in the lead up before Infinity War; and Captain Marvel is set even further in the past.  Next season of SHIELD could be set in the lead up to Infinity War; and the final episodes of the season next May could serve as an advertisement for Avengers 4 and direct lead-in as we’re reminded of where Infinity War left things.

With Skrulls, the story “Secret Invasion” comes to mind (where several dead heroes show up claiming they’re the real deal who has been held captive for years - it was the impostor who died); but I don’t really see that fitting or being a spoiler.

I suppose they could use “Annihilation” (the mini that introduced the modern Guardians of the Galaxy); and while it could be a spoiler about the end of Infinity War, it would really have zero to do with any potential story in the next Avengers movie.

Incidentally, I went back and looked at the various The End books, and I forgot about “Marvel: The End”.  It was a Thanos story too in which he discovered a flaw had been created in the universe and ultimately the only way to fix it was for Thanos to sacrifice his own life.  Some possible ideas there about where the next movie might go.

I’ve been trying to think of what the title on next year’s Avengers movie could be; they said they withheld it because it’s a spoiler.  They’ve liked to use titles of existing Marvel Comics stories even if they don’t exactly match the story in the movie; so I’ve been mulling over what title could possibly fit and be a spoiler of some kind.

One idea that pops to mind is based on a series of specials and minis focusing on the final story of a Marvel character.  The first and most well known was “Wolverine: The End” which gave us Old Man Logan (and the concept on which the movie Logan was very loosely based).  Could the next Avengers movie be titled “Avengers: The End”?  I can see where it would work in many ways.

I don’t think Strange told any of them what the real plan was; I think it goes back to the old idea of keeping changes to a bare minimum when you’re tampering with time.  Also, Strange couldn’t risk Thanos figuring things out; so the less people who could spill the strategy the better.

With Tony, we’re dealing with a genius engineer; and I’m reminded of that old Phillip K Dick story they used as the basis for that Ben Affleck movie “Paycheck”.  Can Tony reverse engineer the solution based on what Strange gave him?  Strange made Thanos promise not to kill Tony in exchange for the stone; and Thanos complied.  Thanos in fact complied completely - Tony was part of the half who lived after the finger snap.  Nebula is part of the half who lived (someone Thanos had a “family” connection to).  All of the original Avengers lived - possibly because Thanos had his respect for them on his mind when he saved Tony.   The clue is there that the subconscious of Thanos worked through the Gauntlet.   What can Tony reverse engineer from that to find a weakness Thanos left to exploit?

And the ending - I’m glad they had the guts for it.  I was in a packed theater, and that’s the first time in my memory that it was dead silent when the film faded to black. Everyone seemed to be in shock.

But how to resolve this?  Thanos alone on the farm is how Infinity Gauntlet ended, but Thanos got there after losing everything and faking his death to escape.  He went to the farm for introspection; to try to come to terms with why he always loses.  Eventually he does find peace with it and becomes a kind of anti-hero for a time.

But this could play into the movie storyline resolution. In the comics, Thanos loses because deep down he thinks he’s supposed to lose - he expects it.  We saw glimmers of this in the movie with his relationship with Gamora and even Titan. But when you wield the power to make anything you wish come true, and some part of you believes you will lose - the Gauntlet will realize that.  I would think there is some trap door the Gauntlet has left in place to beat Thanos; something that Thanos created subconsciously. The heroes just need to find it; and given Doctor Strange’s actions to save Tony (directly contradicting his earlier statement), it would seem that Tony Stark staying alive is part of the key to finding the way to defeat Thanos.

And the stinger at the end of the credits of course is summoning Captain Marvel.  The original Mar-vell was the first arch-enemy of Thanos - well before Adam Warlock.  When Infinity Gauntlet was written, Mar-vell was dead and played no part; but it could be that the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel has some kind of history with Thanos.  That may be the key psychologically.  We’ll see.

So how does the Mueller investigation affect your personal world?

Well, for years I’ve played an MMO called DC Universe Online (allowing you to create your own original DC Comics hero to go on adventures with Superman, etc).  Originally owned by Sony (licensing DC properties), the Sony Online Entertainmrnt division was sold in 2015 to a New York investment group called Columbus Nova who subsequently created Daybreak Games to house all of the SOE business.

Well, this was reported on April 4:

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 … -to-trump/

It was found as part of Mueller’s investigation that Andrew Intrater, CEO of Columbus Nova, gave $250,000 to the Trump inaugural fund; he had never donated this amount of money to any other politician.  Why this mattered to Mueller is that Intrater is a cousin of Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg who runs Renova Group (the parent company of Columbus Nova).  On April 6, Vekselberg and Renova were added to the list of Russia sanctions freezing their assets and ordering their businesses to shut down by June 5.

Currently, Daybreak Games is trying to erase history by editing their Wiki page and deleting articles they can control, but it was very clear in 2015 that they are a Columbus Nova company.  Now suddenly...they want you to believe they never were.

The bottom line is that the U.S. government doesn’t even have to shut down Daybreak to kill DC Online.  DC is owned by Warner Brothers who also owns CNN (a network at war with Trump).  Trump has also had a hand in hindering the Warner / AT&T merger.  All it will take is Warner getting wind of the Daybreak / Russia connections in the Mueller investigation, and they’ll likely pull the plug on DC Online.  Disney did the same thing by pulling the licensing plug on Marvel Heroes last year, and the death of that game was over sexual harassment allegations within the company that developed Marvel Heroes.

So if it comes to pass and Daybreak / DC Online is shuttered - for me, Robert Mueller will have killed the DC Universe.

One of the biggest boons of getting the Fantastic Four license back is access to Kang the Conqueror.  Kang is their ticket to actually one-up themselves on Infinity War if they attempted to adapt Avengers Forever.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avengers_Forever

It would need some re-tooling given how heavy the story was steeped in old Marvel continuity, but it could be done.

Knew this was coming, but now some solid word that development of Marvel movies at Fox has been halted pending the Disney merger (something currently set to be finalized sometime before next summer).  This means that Deadpool 2 and X-men Dark Phoenix will be the last of the Fox-verse.  The New Mutants movie is still hanging out there (set for release in February), but it didn’t appear to be very connected to the other X-men movies.

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2018/04/19 … men-movie/

Personally, I think Fox got X-men right more often than not; but Fantastic Four needed to go to better hands.  Done correctly, FF will be a seamless blend into the Marvel Studios movies.  X-men is going to be different; and I’m envisioning it as becoming something more like the old animated series in the 1990’s.

Incidentally, the lead up to Infinity Gauntlet in the Silver Surfer monthly, the Thanos Quest and the Infinity Gauntlet mini-series is one my all time favorite storylines in comics.  The art of Ron Lim in Surfer coupled with Jim Starlin’s writing (the creator of Thanos) was really the pinnacle of the material they produced in their careers.

Bonus trivia if you didn’t know - Thanos is based on DC Comics Darkseid.  Starlin went to DC first wanting to write his stories for Darkseid and the New Gods, but DC said no.  So Statlin went to Marvel, created Thanos and told his Darkseid stories anyway.

And really, the limited leading roles is how the comics story was handled too.  The Infinity Guantlet mini-series focused on only a few characters (Thanos, Adam Warlock, Silver Surfer, Death, Mephisto and ultimately Nebula).  While every hero in Marvel at the time also appeared, they were just supporting players with maybe their own moment here or there.  Honestly, half of the major Marvel characters died in issue one when Thanos snapped his fingers.

Of course, the Infinity War movie will also include what was the lead-up to Infinity Gauntlet, and that happened completely in the Silver Surfer monthly series along with a two issue mini called Thanos Quest with Thanos as the lead collecting the gems.

There is already evidence they’re following the Infinity Gauntlet Comic - the scene with Hulk falling through the skylight window at Doctor Strange’s Sanctum is a direct reproduction of a scene from Infinity Gauntlet #1 (the only difference being in the comic it was Silver Surfer who crashed through the window after a fight on the moon with a doppleganger Surfer that Thanos created).  So I expect we’ll see the comic formula followed. From what 21 is saying, I suspect Thor is sliding into the Adam Warlock role.

Well, the question is “Does Sliders have a brand?”   We often have a bit of tunnel vision as invested fans, but the facts are that a great many more people watched the good years of Sliders  than did the bad.  The pilot movie premiere had an estimated 14 million people watch it.

http://www.slidecage.com/wp-content/upl … atings.pdf

To put that in today’s perspective, the recent return of Roseanne initially had an estimated 18 million viewers and was considered a blockbuster smash by today’s terms.

In my experience in the greater world, Sliders is not something on people’s minds; but if I mention the name even now, I’ve been surprised how many say “Oh yeah!  Loved that show!”  That’s all it takes - mentioning the name.  That’s a brand, and I believe it has more value than you may expect.

So if I’m reading that right, the DC shows may all be renewed, but it looks like some will have smaller episode orders.  The obvious candidate for a cut is Supergirl; a smaller order meaning that they can continue the Supergirl / Legends wheel format they just tried out.

For me, the stand out of the animated films is Gods and Monsters.  By all appearances, they were just letting Bruce Timm be Bruce Timm.  There was no “adapt this” or “help us sell a comics reboot” or “make it rated R”.  Instead it seemed like someone finally said, “Hey Bruce!  You got any cool ideas?”

DC didn’t need to change the tv formula for their cartoons; it was working fine.  The only change was format to DVD.  Maybe the new, upcoming change of format (to a streaming app) will get them back on track since it feels more like tv.  They have a good start at it with a Young Justice revival by the original people.

Sunstones do store and emit energy, but I’ve always believed it’s name comes more from the Kryptonians history as sun worshippers.  Rao is the name of Krypton’s red sun, but it’s also the name of their god.  Sunstones have unique and wondrous properties which could lead one to think they were the stuff of the gods.

As for Brainiac, I do not believe he is the time traveler trying to alter history.  Brainiac was always destined to come to Krypton and steal Kandor; but in the original history, the Kryptonians were prepared enough to beat back Brainiac and prevent him from destroying the entire planet (Brainiac’s M.O. being to take a sample and then destroy the whole - his collection of rarities is because he made them rare).

But history has been changed.  Seg-el’s grandfather was silenced.  Krypton has not prepared.  And Brainiac is now going to succeed in destroying Krypton.  Jor-el will never be born.

There is a mastermind at work here moving chess pieces, but I don’t think it’s the future incarnation of Brainiac.

Missed the premiere on SyFy this past Wednesday, but caught a rerun last night.

I was really impressed.  For me, this is what the DC movies should be.  The episode covered many serious and depressing situations, but it has the hook of a genuine character at its center - a surprising Han Solo type rogue that turns out to be Superman’s grandfather.  Despite the drama in his orbit, Seg-el keeps a sense of fun and wonder to it.

The Man of Steel movie had a lot of this too (though I believed it failed with characters like Pa Kent), but Batman v Superman and Justice League (with the exception of Aquaman) lost their way.  You need to have genuine, relatable characters at the core - a collection of one liners and some brooding won’t cut it.

The other thing that surprises me about Krypton is the blend of the Christopher Reeve movie history and the Man of Steel history.  Looking at the cape - that’s the Reeve cape with the yellow shield on the back.  Reeve is the original history likely from a timeline where Seg-el’s grandfather was not disgraced and executed.  The new history will be the Man of Steel version.  This series could be the actual bridge of the reboot explaining why things are different.  That’s something I didn’t expect to see.

And one last bit as I often do - I already see where part of the plot is going.  Who is the mystery villain trying to alter history?  Not sure who it is yet, but I think we’ve seen that person already.  Though silent, the person in the golden mask (“The Voice of Rao”) is the one pulling the strings; and the characters noted he was popping up in places he wasn’t expected to be.  I’m confident he’s our time traveler, but who’s under the mask?

The only fact I can offer so far is that I believe it would have to be someone well versed in Kryptonian history.  An interesting choice would be the Legion of Super-Heroes villain The Time Trapper - a character whose motivation has often been to erase Superman from history.

Far fetched?  Maybe not.  The series has already introduced a Legion character with Dev-em.

He’ll be playing the adult version of Sheldon’s brother Georgie:

Wouldn’t be surprised to see a Sliders reference or two get slipped in.

The difference being with guns one person's bad choice mostly leads to other people suffering

The same could be said of cars.  Distracted driving (cell phone use) kills innocent people.  Road rage / aggressive driving kills innocent people.  Speeding kills innocent people.   Falling asleep while driving kills innocent people.  Intoxicated driving kills innocent people.

The above is just looking at people’s bad choices leading one machine to cause death and other people suffering.  It does not include people who intentionally drive on the sidewalk to run over people.

Let’s ban cars.

I see it’s listed for 2020.  I made a post on the old board laying out several examples, but Universal tends to put out a reboot 20 to 25 years after the original series debut.  2020 would be right on time.

An exception is Quantum Leap, but I believe creator Bellisario has a veto power that prevents a new series.  Bellisario has worked for Universal for a long time (dating back to the first Battlestar Galactica), so be probably knew he needed some kind of clause in the contact to protect his creator rights.

What if the leader of a country banned use of the letter N?

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/c … 77686.html

Take that off the possible list and add it to the probable list.

Could make for an interesting story, though - especially a written one.  And think of how language might change in English speaking countries if you broke the law by using the letter N in the words you spoke.

The concern I have is the focus on “mentally ill”.  If enhanced background checks are going through doctor’s records to see who’s mentally fit, then you will have many refusing to seek treatment for their mental problem because they are afraid of having a black mark on their record that follows them through life.  Without treatment, this creates a more dangerous situation instead of solving problems.

Also, what if the guy just took the gun from his parents’ gun safe?  Does that mean background checks will need to extend to family and known associates of a buyer?

Where all this eventually leads is just one place - nobody being allowed to sell, own or possess guns.

We have a common sense system in place already - if people see someone acting unbalanced, they report it so the person can be checked out.  In this Florida case, the shooter was reported many times to various agencies - and nothing was done.  This is the issue that needs to be looked at and addressed.

I remember back...I guess 20 years ago at this point, the big push against smoking began.  Smoking was bad for you.  It ruined kids lives.  It killed people.  Commercials began to appear on tv.  Fictional characters across all medium had smoking habits toned down or eliminated.

Now we’re at today.  Guns are bad for you.  They ruin people’s lives.  They kill people.  But yet we’re still inundated with fictional characters shooting them off like rock stars.

Don’t get me wrong - I don’t blame the gun or even the cigarette; people make their own  choices and people must be held accountable for them.  But I do find it interesting that theses stars preach against guns when they spend all day making them look cool.

I was there for a midnight premiere of Captain America; not an empty seat in the house.  It’s one of the few movies I’ve been to where at the end the audience stood up and cheered clapping; and I felt the same way.  The movie had alot of heart; and it really left me pumped up.

I attribute that more to director Joe Johnson than anything else.  That man really gets the idealized version of World War II filled with that innocent patriotism and a propaganda feel.  That’s really what Captain America is; it was a perfect fit.

The easiest path through a “Green Arrow prison” story would be some story time in prison followed by a draft into the Suicide Squad.  Activities in the squad then lead to redemption and/or methods of getting Oliver back in the hero life (time travel being an obvious one).

Of course, I think DC has barred the use of the squad outside of the feature film version.

Black Panther has never been a character I was interested in, so I’m not too excited about it.  I felt the same way about Thor.

A new parallel universe series in the mix.  Looks like the first episode already aired on Dec 10; but episode two is set to premiere this Sunday, Jan 28:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counterpart_(TV_series)

An espionage thriller with a metaphysical twist, Counterpart tells the story of Howard Silk (Simmons), a lowly cog in a bureaucratic U.N. agency who is turning the last corner of a life filled with regret, when he discovers the agency he works for is guarding a secret: a crossing to a parallel dimension. Through Howard and his “counterpart” on the other side, the show will navigate themes of identity, idealism, what ifs, and lost love.

Starring J.K. Simmons, it’s probably got more in common with Fringe than Sliders, but still a parallel universe show.

It would take some planning, but a wheel of four shows is doable.  However, I think it could actually give the actors *more* time off than they have now. Four shows filming 13 episodes each is your 52 weeks a year.  That would be an episode cut for Flash, Supergirl and Arrow with the actors only making up part of it in guest appearances on other shows - so they could be looking at a pay cut too.

But, 13 straight weeks of filming for an actor on their series and coming back for another month later in the year to film the big crossover; that’s less work than most of them are doing now and still potentially clocking in 17 episodes on their pay check.

I loved the first Andrew Garfield movie; the second was a mess that reminded me of Joel Schumacher Batman.  Even with that, I wish they had continued on with Garfield’s version.  However, I don’t think that was happening regardless. The leaked Sony e-mails seem to indicate that Garfield got himself fired from the role:

http://www.showbiz411.com/2015/05/01/sp … sony-chief

The Spider-Man series have so far been adaptations of eras in spirit if not fact.  The Toby Maguire years were the original Stan Lee stuff from the 60’s.  Garfield’s version was more the feel of the late 70’s through 80’s Spider-Man from Len Wein, Roger Stern and even Tom Defalco.  And Homecoming is very much an adaptation of the Brian Michael Bendis Ultimate Spider-Man from the 2000s.

Ultimate Spider-man is where Young Aunt May comes from (she was presented as in her 50’s); this is where “chair guy” comes from; it’s really where the overall tone comes from.  And while Tony Stark has changed moods over the years like Batman (going from a happy guy to a grouch who alienated all of his friends), the Ultimate Tony Stark was a true a-hole. This was partly because they turned him into a genetic experiment where his whole body was his brain (which would be why he’s an ultra genius, of course); but also partly because he had cancer and was dying.

Homecoming has some problems.  I didn’t like the high tech suit.  I didn’t like the Stark mentor angle.  That stuff wasn’t in Ultimate Spider-Man either.  I did like the high school stuff.  I liked Spidey bumbling around a little.  I loved what they did with Vulture (making that character “cool” for the first time in my memory).

Overall, I enjoyed it; but it’s faults (namely Stark) kept me from being amazed.  Hopefully the next solo outing for Spidey will give him the full spotlight; but that movie is also slated to be the direct follow up to the Infinity War aftermath, so they’ll probably again be preoccupied with the greater Marvel universe instead of focusing on a true character piece.  This is where Marvel is starting to stumble a bit; they’re forgetting that their success began with individual solo movies that only connected subtly.  That approach gave characters a chance to shine without someone else stealing their spotlight.
