sliders uses parallel universes to create a new episode of the twilight zone each week.

mcu uses parrallel universes to re-use characters without breaking continuity or to unite disparate characters in one story.  the producers were even calling blade runner an "alternate universe" when the sequel came out in 2017 and los angeles was not quite what the original film was like.  use of the multiverse is kinda inevitible because it's convenient.  but a different use than sliders does it.

If it came back with original cast, especially Sabrina too, and Tracy at the helm, than it imo is every true sliders fan's dream to come true.  Wow how great would that be.  A second shot at what we loved. I won't let myself get overly excited until we hear it actually is going into production but it would be special if it happened.

Well, I would argue that the budget in S4 - 5 was severely mismanaged by:

  • That ridiculous Chandler Hotel set which was lavish, overlarge and devoured the episodic budget with its rental and maintenance fees

  • The constant emphasis on stories that are presented and resolved in terms of gunfights, vehicle chases, fistfights, laser beams, historical reenactment groups playing cowboys and civil war soldiers, motorcycle stunts, etc.

  • Repeatedly stripping episodes of their episodic budget to set aside money for a grand scale series finale (that was never filmed)

  • Leather jackets

I think Torme wouldn't have written scripts that needed an action budget and therefore wouldn't strain against the restrictions the way the Sci-Fi years often did.

The leather jackets pretty much summed up those seasons!

There were some scripts however that could have played better with a bigger budget.  The universal lot looked like a lot, so many of the episodes looked the same.  It def. had an impact on quality imo.  That said, it was also Sci-Fi's no. 2 show... almost no. 1.

Parallels was a pilot shot for fox digital five or so years ago.  They filmed in a foreign location to help drive down cost and did some amazing thing with CGI.  I got the sense it was done for like 500k to 800k.  So there certainly are ways.  If the stars are willing to go to a less than desirable location.

The thing is, whether Sliders comes back on a SyFy or a Peacock, you don't want to set the budget too high to the point where it is unprofitable (even nbc's manifest can't find a new home despite being no. 1 on netflix for example)... but  you also don't want to set it too low where (a) it's not a strong enough (standout enough) final product where it can't attract an audience beyond hardcore fans, and (b) fails to make the network or streamer an irreplaceable part of those viewers' lives.  Because that passion is what drives cable subscription fees to the network or in the case of premium, sign-up or audience retention.

I still think it's more challenging to have a many-worlds show moreso stuck on a lot but you are right that tracy is very clever and might be able to go with more subtle differences in worlds to create interesting situations.

ireactions wrote:

I don't know if SLIDERS needs to be an expensive show. It could be filmed in Toronto with stock footage of San Francisco intercut with studio and outdoor shots. The harbourfront could represent the coastal areas of San Francisco. SLIDERS only has one critical effect: the vortex. Alternate realities on the Torme model are best presented through set dressing, signs, costuming, news articles and segments, dialogue and performances, not computer generated special effects. Crises are addressed through conversation and negotiation. Peacock could probably do a SLIDERS reboot with a new cast, a revival with the original cast, a Disney Channel style version and might still have spent less than they did on SAVED BY THE BELL.

perhaps.  however, we saw some of that on season 4&5.   I think the show benefits from having a lot of locations to utilize, but that drives up the cost.

back in 95, i think s1 was about 1.4m per episode. s2 and 3 about 1.2.  then with syfy it got to be 600-800k.

although I do agree tracy is such a talent, you could probably do something still interesting without many locations.

Grizzlor wrote:

Well Cabbie, this is the time to push for projects on Peacock.  NBC are pushing for new projects to up the subscriber base.  A couple years from now, they'll be like Netflix and not want to spend any money.

I think they spent a billion dollars on programming and made like 100-150m on it last year.  So they are in the hole significantly.  A lot of key execs actually lost their jobs.

Point being, Peacock is gonna be very careful about what they put money into now, but they have seen some success with Girls5Eva and maybe a couple of other things.  Making peacock a success is important to  the future of the company (though there's  been some rumors they may have to throw in the towel and merge with another giant if they can't see a path with it).  Something like Sliders they'd really have to be convinced of to greenlight.  They already have streaming numbers of the library to make some assumptions on consumer interest on.  I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility they could give it a shot because it is so hard to create new shows/brands now.

We just have to also appreciate they don't have a lot of ability to greenlight many originals.  Not many bets they can take so any of these decisions are big for them but they may say we'll give it a shot.  They of course did go for nostalgia with Saved by the Bell and Punky Brewster.  I am not sure how they'd assess the success of those bets.

But in any case, either Peacock or SyFy would be a great home for it.

Who knows, maybe SyFy channel or Peacock would bite.  There was a time a few years ago, when everyone was trying to chase prestige tv and mimick AMC/USA's success.  Sliders was looked down upon, seen as hoaky.  Perhaps development execs will be warmer to the franchise given all their failures in trying to create new ones.  The biggest issue is just how big Sliders is?  Too cult?  Too many years ago?  Maybe, maybe not.

Sliders cost money to do right because it's based on the premise of a different world of the week.  If Tracy has an approach that is interesting enough from a character perspective, and a network/studio thinks programming can be done at a medium range, perhaps lower end of that, budget level then maybe we get to see the gang back together?

One thing is for sure.  Tracy has always been ahead of his time from a creative perspective.  He's never been given full runway as a creator to just go with his gut.  But the man can create something interesting to people, and that's not the case for every creator in hollywood who gets an opportunity.  So I hope he is given a chance to do Sliders again -- because maybe we'll get more storytelling that lasts the test of time, at least to some audience.

i don't look at the episode with any sort of shame but i think people have a right to have a conversation about it and they should be listened to.  but right now, i have yet to hear of anybody having that conversation around that episode that who are within the black community.  it's obviously very old content and i think that sort of conversation would take place  if it were a new show on a platform like netflix.

Not sure what to say about this one. It is very funny, but music is not one of my strengths. Also, I don't know about Torme's writing for black characters. Some have criticized it as a racist caricature; some have seen it as based on Torme's friendships with musicians. All I can say is that Cleavant Derricks is a wonderful actor and I love how he takes Rembrandt's torment and makes it all funny.

There's something I really like about the feel of that episode.  Not sure if it's the directing, production design, wardrobe, cinematography etc but it feels a little..... cinematic?  The way the 80s/90 comedies felt.

The way I framed mine was an alternate season 3. Episode 1 is Slide Effects which is NOT written by me. That is Ireaction's/Torme's story. Anyways, that resets the show back to after season 2. I keep a few season 3 episodes mainly Double Cross, Dead Man Sliding, The Guardian, Season Greedings and Murder Most Foul albeit you would have to assume they would happen slightly differently and have some slight changes to them. I already make it cannon that it's still set in Vancouver's San Francisco and they still have their season 2 haircuts and wardrobe lol.

To add in, I rewrote a few season 4 episodes with the original cast. Those would be Alternateville Horror, Lipschitz Live! and Roads Taken.

I also provided a rewrite of The Exodus which was closer to John Reye's Davies' idea for the story. That means no Rickman, Maggie and no Arturo dying.

I also have three pure original stories. How to Save a Life, Virtual Lucidity and Forgiveness.

I haven't written anything since May but I will continue to post if and when I write anything else. Read of them what you will. Hope you enjoy. Feel free to give any feedback if you like or dislike them.

I admit that it is rather sad to think of Kyle tweeting madly at STAR TREK producers not realizing that his posts have gone from being buried in a sea of comments to being totally invisible. But Kyle has unfortunately crossed a line.

Tracy Torme, as I wrote above, is clearly not on the same end of the political spectrum as I am. But Tracy Torme, regardless of who he votes for or criticizes politically -- he wears a mask and advises that others do the same. Kyle brags that he does not wear a mask and encourages people to get sick and die. Torme, regardless of what alt-right/right-wing podcasts he appears on, knows from his pandemic research for I AM LEGEND that he must get vaccinated. Kyle declares that vaccination is posturing self-poisoning. This is not just a difference of opinion; these are willful falsehoods that could get people killed. For all my faults and failings -- and for all of Torme's -- we would never allow our actions or statements to encourage people to physically hurt themselves or others.

I'm so relieved that Slider_Quinn21 is getting vaccinated and that the vaccine is so readily available in the States. Here in Canada, my mother got her first shot, but we simply don't have the manufacturing capacity to do as well as America in distribution. In addition, my province has started making some terrible, terrible moves. The premier (think a state governor) keeps declaring 'lockdowns' -- but the only lockdowns are for shops, restaurants, hair salons -- and that simply isn't where the cases are coming.

The majority of the infections are in offices, call centres, construction, warehouses, manufacturing plants, food processing. The majority of the infected are people who don't get paid sick days and have no ability to stay at home, so they go to work, get infected, spread the infection and end up in the intensive care units which are filled to bursting. But the premier won't lock down construction and big business because that's where most of his voters and financial supporters exist.

In addition, this rampant spread has caused rampant viral mutation and our vaccine distribution isn't enough to outrun it. At this point, the province will, rather than lock down the industries that have the highest transmission rates, pass laws declaring that doctors will not be liable if they withhold medical resources from deathly ill patients in favour of caring for patients who have a better chance of being saved.

Canada has always defined itself as being not as bad as the United States. But now, the United States has some capacity to manufacture vaccines and Canada has none whatsoever and is relying on imports. Canada also has Justin Trudeau. He is a sweet, pleasant, Quinn Mallory-esque prime minister (think president) who can't seem to go six months without some self-inflicted screwup of his own making (much like Quinn).

In contrast, President Joe Biden seems to have learned not to trip over his own feet (aside from that moment in December 2020 where he broke his foot playing tug of war with his dog).

It's been sad to see Canadians having to deal with a much greater lag than Americans on vaccines.  Obviously our cultures are very intertwined.  But I guess it's the same or less worse with Mexico in terms of lag (and yet i dont ever think that -- shame on me).

America is doing fairly well on vacinnations but I am not sure Americans  appreciate that what happens in other nations, especially bordering countries, is gonna impact America.  All the mutations that are allowed to happen, it will continue to be a problem for America.  So it's in America's best interest to worry about the rate of vaccination in neighboring countries.

In other news, UNIVERSAL SIGNS has apparently been available in a supposedly HD format on Vimeo. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/universalsigns UNIVERSAL SIGNS is a 2008 film starring Sabrina Lloyd. It's particularly funny because when I first started writing SLIDERS screenplays in 2011, I had trouble getting Wade's voice from watching SLIDERS itself. I saw UNIVERSAL SIGNS was for sale on DVD through the film's website, eagerly purchased a copy and anticipated playing it with my eyes shut to concentrate on Sabrina's voice -- only to discover it was a silent movie, performed entirely in sign language and had no spoken dialogue (or at least none you could hear). I eventually had to find DOPAMINE, also featuring Lloyd as a troubled schoolteacher, and that got it to work.

Anyway, it is supposedly in HD on Vimeo, but I bought and downloaded it -- and it's a shockingly poor image. It's 720p, but the bit rate is so painfully low that the video is filled with blocky artifacts and blurriness. It looks like it was filmed digitally but hypercompressed for online download.

However, I was able to run the 720p file through Topaz and deblock it entirely, smoothing out the artifacts and bringing out each strand of Sabrina Lloyd's hair and the marks and pores on her face. I emailed the company to ask if there were an AI option to also add an audio track to the movie with all of Sabrina Lloyd's dialogue made audible and they said they'd get back to me after Easter.

it's really cool sabrina was part of such a quality project like that.  and she looks great too.  i mean that was 13 years after the pilot (or whenever it was shot) but it's a very different look.

Prince of Wales was a fun episode.

Cyberlink PowerDVD has a neat Smart Stretch function. It zooms in slightly on 4:3 video, then stretches the edges of the video, reducing the percentage of the stretch as it gets closer to the center of the frame. This converts 4:3 to 16:9 while only losing at most 5 - 6 per cent of the frame. This appears to be proprietary, however. You yourself attempted a smart stretch on your own software and found that it distorted the frame. This doesn't happen in PowerDVD.

However, I don't use PowerDVD anymore. I used it on a home theatre PC, but I've since then replaced it with an Android TV box in my living room. Alternatively, I watch videos on an Android tablet. Watching anything on a laptop is rather cumbersome now because I have to plug in an external drive. I haven't found any Android TV or mobile apps with smart stretching and I've just accepted that 4:3 video will be pillarboxed. Zach Snyder seems to be into it with his JUSTICE LEAGUE cut.

I think I have PowerDVD so i'll try it if I do.

yes, I did do a smart stretch when I did an upscale and it mostly worked, but ultimately the more the characters moved to the side of the frame, the more they got stretched.  Which really started annoying me at times.   It looks fine when they are toward the center because no much stretching their

What's odd: it was totally unnecessary to shrink the episodes so much for the 8.5 GB discs on which they released the episodes. It makes me wonder if they originally planned to present SLIDERS on 4.7 GB discs. And if the Pilot was a first effort that they decided to keep at a high bitrate while drastically cutting their time and storage on the rest. The result was a fuzzy, blurry image for the Universal DVD release that Mill Creek made about 1/4 even blurrier in reducing the file sizes by another 50 per cent.

What's most maddening is the SVOD downloads at amazon, itunes, cable providers are all of horrible quality.... and that is without restriction to a disc size.

I think the stuff on Comet looks better though than the svod downloads.

One of the things Freaks & Greeks blu-ray did was rescan film and then use the 16:9 frame, even though it was broadcast orignally in 4:3.  I guess no crew were caught in the shots.   So the ultimate would not only be a film scan but the full 16:9.  But you wonder if there might ever be image recognition technology that could "build out" / imagine the rest of the frame to make it 16:9.  This seems quite possible if you apply machine learning from 16:9 frames.  I'm not sure there'd be enough commercial application though for someone to develop this.

And yea I'll never stop believing the colors on the pilot were intended to look like that.  But I could be wrong.

What a tremendous job in restoring all this content to the way it more naturally looked when it first broadcast!  All born out of the love that the original creative team, who cared about the material -- tracy, john, sabrina, cleavant and even jerry -- helped inspire.  Such a gift to fans for us to see this faux-d upconversion.  Technology can be a wonderful thing when the studio won't scan the negatives themselves (although I'll never stop hoping technology one day makes that affordable enough for universal to one day do so).   Nevertheless this looks pretty much close to what we would otherwise get -- especially the close up shots.

Has anyone caught Resident Alien on SyFy?  Finally they have an original show that really works.

Looks good, especially the on-stage stuff with Quinn.

Usually I find charlie's performances distracting.  Yes, Colin has an endearing quality but really it was as if a major league baseball player convinced the team to put his brother on the roster when he had no business being there... and the  results weighed down the team.

Finally had a chance to hook up an old laptop to a tv today with an HDMI cable.   I figured a tv would be the true test.  The samples looked terrific.  Really this is everything I would hope for with a Universal release.  What a terrific job by ireactions.  I hope that something like this eventually is done officially by universal -- fans deserve this level of quality.

What's really interesting in people who did not even want to think about  sliders for most of the last 20-25 years -- john, tracy and even sabrina -- have been recharged around it or are starting to come around.  some of the wounds have healed.

it's obviously a long shot but happy the old gang is engaged.  and that they are looking back at their creation and each other with the fondness and respect it deserves.  even though getting something done would be a longshot, it would be cool if they collaborated creatively to envision something.  i'm sure eventually we'd hear about it.

I didn't plan to upscale these, but Transmodiar asked for "Genesis" and "Common Ground" footage in HD for his fan edit and I accidentally ripped "Prophets and Loss" from the DVD and decided to upscale that too.

The results are actually quite nice (in terms of video quality). (I'm guessing that) Seasons 4 - 5 switched from 35mm film to 16mm film that was transferred to video with a high level of grain that was retained in Mill Creek's overcompressed release. It's grain that the AI can latch onto for a good result.

My God, I can only imagine what poor Linda Henning made of her appearances Seasons 4 and 5.

Genesis looks crisp, with some nice natural grain.   Prophets and Loss as some of my favorite coloring I've seen (I guess for indoor scenes).

this reminds me.  I have to watch the excised Exodus!

I upscaled some select scenes from "California Reich" and "Slidecage." "Slidecage" stands out to me -- it was the first time Temporal Flux and I really talked about SLIDERS and he told me how Quinn was seriously out of character in this scene due to Jerry O'Connell's poor performance. It was the first time I really thought to question the onscreen product and view it as a constructed product rather than an objective TV reality.

Also, thanks to Cez who has recommended a hosting option.

Everything looks superb.

When the Freaks & Geeks blu-ray was done, they actually went from 4:3 to 16:9 because the stuff in the film scan was good enough to use.  Looking at these upscales -- particuarly of the later seasons -- the only thing that's holding them back from looking like something shot in the last 10 years is probably a 16:9 frame.

HD scenes from "Dead Man Sliding" (Wade, Rembrandt and Arturo corner Quinn-2) and "Prince of Slides" (Rembrandt faces off against Rembrandt & Quinn Mallory apparently knows how to swordfight now -- which could be part of Quinn's sports obsession except there was no fencing gear in his room in the Pilot).

ah great to hear!

On the subject of the upscaling endeavor, is there a way to (in essence) rotoscope the foreground images and upscale them apart from the background? I think that might eliminate the waxyness of the background.

I think one of the Star Wars despecialized blu ray editions do something similar.

Very cool TF!

TF posted a screencap of "Prince of Wails" in another thread. Compare it to the upscale and note where the AI struggles: onscreen text that's blurry is unreadable even after upscaling.

There's no rescuing some of that text.  Maybe give it the Star Wars CGI / George Lucas treatment.

Nice to see the big difference in quality between the two images though.
