Renova Group is big in the news this week.  Lots of money coming from them.  Again, not a shock, given that Trump was schooled by mobsters, partnered with them for decades in NY, and now worldwide.

BTW: somewhat OT but I finally watched Roseanne S10, and beyond the joke-line of the first episode, this series has absolutely NOTHING to do with Trump or politics.  It was a stroke of genius for the writers and the network to hype it up that way, but the show is just good clean family corny-ness, with issues that we all face.  I've really enjoyed it.

Terrible news.  Hope she recovers.

I've really enjoyed it.  Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) is fantastic.  The showrunner has said that once Fox gives the word on the show ending, he would write a 6 episode arc to close with David as Batman/proto-Batman.  Obviously they didn't have that chance this season, and it was too soon.  Camren (Selina) shaved her head last month (whatever), which immediately had a lot of fans worried about cancellation.

Here's the scoop.  Warners fired Clayne Crawford from Lethal Weapon, and if they can't recast his Riggs part by I assume Monday, that show is toast, and Gotham is renewed.  Unfortunately I don't think Fox will take both.  Fox has already canned a ton of shows, partly to make room for Thursday NFL.

Well, as you probably have seen in the past, I go to a ton of conventions, film sets, stage doors, etc, etc.  That being said, I do love meeting actors who have appeared on Sliders, and if time permits, asking them about it.  Of course my big want is to meet Tracy Torme.

Main Cast:

Met Jerry like half dozen times now 2011+, always very friendly.  Met John a few times at conventions 2014/2015, another super kind, friendly man.  Cleavant I finally tracked down at a play house in Hartford, CT, in 2016.  He was in a hurry, but a barrel of laughs.  Finally Kari I met at the Chiller Theatre in NJ back in 2014, and she even gave me a big smooch on the cheek!  Sabrina I probably won't even track down, Robert Floyd is out of the biz, and Tembi Locke is acting in NCIS I believe, and has a book coming out.

Well I asked both questions.  He said he's not asked hardly about Sliders, but did commend Tracy Torme, and said he was bummed at the time about not being asked to stay on.  A bit heartbroken.  As for hanging together, he didn't recall but that most of the film industry would hit up the Sutton Hotel and a few other spots Friday/Saturday night all the time.  Very nice guy, I'll post a pic later on.

What I would say in general is that most guest stars on the show remember it fondly, and that they're often still intrigued by the concept.  Nick, same as even Jeffrey Dean Morgan, is surprised it hasn't been rebooted yet.

Nicolas Lea is finally doing conventions regularly, and will be appearing at the Chiller Expo in NJ this weekend.  I'm 100% gonna stop by his table tomorrow night.  Anybody have a "Missing Slider Ryan" question you'd like asked of him?

Chuck McCann has died, he of course played the hilarious Captain Jack Brim in Season One's The King is Back.  He was 83.

I met Chuck about 5 years ago at the Chiller Convention, and he was terrific.  He really was a good sport and quite jovial.

I'm not complaining about a slant this way or that.  Everyone exaggerates these days, one way or the other.  What you should not be doing is flat out lying about facts.  Trump routinely lies, often out of thin air on the spot.  The media (beyond Fox) calls him out on it, and he brandishes this fake news.  These are not policies issues, these pertain to his disaster of a White House, and the various lawsuits and investigations it's embroiled in.  That remains my concern with him, the media has often acted as a check on his power, while Congress has laid down in front of the train tracks.

849

(3,504 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

The scandal is that they are forced to "inform" viewers that stories being covered by the rest of the media are "fake" when they are NOT.  It's the Trump admin and friends decrying negative press as fake, even though the facts continue to prove otherwise.

Maybe it's something a streaming service like Netflix could pick-up? I believe the satire and political commentary of early Sliders could work really well in today's television landscape.

Certainly possible, although the trend is to take successful older movies (with much more name recognition), and reboot those.  As for linking in the old cast, should they go down that route, it's absurdly easy!  I mean, you could go the Pilot route where Quinn shows up to school/brag to his double, or basically have the new group "stumble" on a world with one or more of the original characters.  Since there's barely any reason to adhere to previous "continuity," their back story could be mentioned just in general terms.  It's incredibly easy and fitting.  One possibility would be to use the old 29.7 year trapped on a world concern!  Granted we're not at that point yet, but for these characters, it's really been almost 20 since we've seen them, so it would make sense.

A reboot I think would work.  Alternate histories, it's just rarely done.  Star Trek, Counterpart, Man in the High Castle, Fringe, The Leftovers, heck even Xena did it.  But they rarely went beyond 2 worlds.  Sliders involved well over 100, with a few dozen that were quite memorable.  The concept remains unique.

Technically the show was already "renewed" for 14 like a year ago, as the boys signed two year deals.  Scoobynatural was incredible.  I laughed nonstop.

No one has really tried a reboot to our knowledge.  Weiss tried to do a movie, Tracy has tried, even Jerry was seriously talking to people following the Funny or Die spoof he did.  It's a terrific concept, no question, and still bizarre that Universal hasn't redone it.  That being said, Universal doesn't have a good track record.

Sinclair Broadcast Group, owner or operator of nearly 200 television stations in the U.S., would be forcing its news anchors to record a promo about “the troubling trend of irresponsible, one sided news stories plaguing our country.” The script, which parrots Donald Trump’s oft-declarations of developments negative to his presidency as “fake news,” brought upheaval to newsrooms already dismayed with Sinclair’s consistent interference to bring right-wing propaganda to local television broadcasts.

This thing was basically a copy of Scientology, that's what drew in the actors, like it does there.  Clearly Allison maintained relationships with people.  I mean when I saw her she had a group of people with her, as well as Glover.  I don't think anybody suspected the master/slave stuff, and apparently that's where she is most culpable.

As for Scientology, I would skip Leah's show and just watch "Going Clear," the doc is far more damning.  Again, I can't understand how they aren't challenged, but they have a ton of money and power and probably dirt on a lot of people.

My GF (bigger fan of orig than I) watched Roseanne, and gave me a quick synopsis.  Said political persuasion was not important; however, way too many OLD story lines that they tried to recap, left her head spinning.  She was more annoyed by how the characters "wound up" all these years later!  I myself was not a big fan.  I thought Aunt Jackie, and the friends were far funnier than the actual family.   For me, the show is out of date, I prefer something like Shameless.

Her ex-BF remained though.  Wow, I didn't realize both women joined this thing back in 2005, and Kristin only left in 2012.  Here's the rub though, this thing was largely like Scientology for many years.  It's only recently that the whole master/slave DOS thing really started up, and Allison is potentially culpable for creating that.  They nicknamed her "Pimp Mack!"  She is in serious, serious trouble.  What a shame.

****I will add, after reading the full criminal complaint against Raniere, Allison is accused mainly of recruiting women.  Towards the end there is evidence submitted that she, like many others, gave "collateral" to the group, so that in the event she leaves, they screw her.  Crazy stuff.  Custody of children, money, dirt on her parents, etc.

859

(135 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Hmmm, you're right, sounds like she's still in it, and likely to be charged by the FBI.  Damn.  From what I've read, this scheme is really not much different than Scientology.  It seems to focus on sex, but in reality it's the same thing.  They recruit you, make you spill the beans, and then blackmail you with those secrets from leaving.  They take your money, and force you to do labor for free.  Seems it was bankrolled by a few older women with lots of money.  No she didn't mention it to me!  But one of the rules of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club!

Frankly I don't see how Scientology continues unimpeded, but unlike this group, they are older with far more money and power.  Tom Cruise has probably done some bad stuff, but I still watch his films without a second thought.  Same with Travolta, Will Smith, anyone else in it.

FAKE NEWS!!!!!  Damn I've been waiting to say that!

Firstly, that article is click bait, and the only reference to her "arrest" is on the freaking  SUN website, a British tabloid rag.

Secondly, if she were hiding out in Mexico OR on the run from the law, would she have agreed to appear in ATLANTIC CITY, NJ, in April???

https://www.gardenstatecomicfest.com/ac … uests.html

OR agreed to pose for a photo with ME last month in New York??!!!  Yes, I went to one of John Glover's off broadway plays, and to my great surprise, she did as well!

https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4766/40252923441_206fd9c3a1.jpg

Thirdly, her involvement in this "cult" was way overblown.  Kristen Kreuk was actually in it first, through her BF at the time.  Then Allison was semi-recruited, and she dated that guy.  However, both she and Kristin came to their senses shortly thereafter and left.

I'm not sure what all the hubbub is about?  They sort of killed a bunch of characters off, revealed a whole lot of anti-climatic stuff, and whatnot.  Basically exactly what the show did 15 years ago.

I am surprised they didn't go forward with other actors like Ambrose and Amell from last year.  I hope they return, maybe this time it's just 6-8 shows, and they can wrap the thing up once and for all.

I too don't see the mental illness thing ever being reliably checked, not to mention challenged in court.  They scream mental illness, but it's given a pittance in terms of funding.  Mentally ill are cast off as dregs of society, at least in terms of budgets.  To deny someone's rights is a VERY difficult thing, and really only the Patriot Act even came close to that.  Age restrictions I think would certainly make a difference.  NRA is opposed of course.  Guns in classrooms totally nuts.  Again, can't trust students won't get at it.

Military-style weapons have been literally involved in nearly every mass shooting over the last 20 years.  They're also the biggest selling weapons of that same time period.  The NRA have been completely unhelpful here.  It's really bizarre, as even the tobacco industry has relented to regulation and taxes and whatnot.  Heck even the fossil-fuel industry isn't this hard set.  In any case, the AR-15 and copycats are going to inflict more damage on people than a 9mm would.  Ban them, that's my view.  As I said, gun fetishists won't like it, but there's simply not enough responsibility or accountability out there these days.  I wouldn't trust 90% of the buffoons who live in my neighborhood to own a be-be gun let alone an AR-15.

867

(3,504 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

Well, the NRA have not advertised "guns" in years.  Their commercials are about patriotism, and blah blah blah.  It's smoke and mirrors.

Here is the greatest joke of all. The conservatives, who rail against "activist" interpretations of the Constitution, have perhaps done so for far longer on the 2nd amendment. If one is to read and follow the act literally, as they say judges should, then the 2nd actually EXPIRED in 1904! That is when the National Guard was created, and for the first time, an actual, full time, well regulated militia was setup, by state. Up until this point, able-bodied WHITE men were expected to be ready to serve in state militias. Mainly these were for slave revolts, Indians, and things like the Whiskey Rebellion.  So that meant they needed to be armed and trained. Thus, the 2nd amendment. That all went out the window when the Guard was created though, eliminating the need for militias, and thus, the right to bear arms to keep said militias prepared. Now, I personally don't believe ppl should have their weapons taken, despite the law being outdated, but just certain ones and for certain dangerous people, all of them.

868

(3,504 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

NRA voter is grossly overhyped; the lobby is NOT.  One of the biggest pieces of this mess is simply the state of Florida.  The NRA lobby has bought so many pols down there, that they have created a scenario where, yes, even the police, have little control over the arsenals of threatening individuals.  The Trayvon/Stand your Ground nonsense was just the beginning.  There is almost nothing that can prevent you from buying every gun known to man down there, and in many actual cases, killing someone with even a shaddy excuse.  The police received DOZENS of complaints on Cruz (the shooter) and his brother.  Couldn't take away his arsenal.  His brief foster parents, both Army, yet both equally naive about him and his arsenal.

Again, maybe this is just be being the "city fellow" here, but I simply never understood the gun fetish.  That's really what it is.  It's not a hobby, it's not like restoring a '68 Chevelle.  It's not sporting like hunting.  It's not for personal protection.  It's a fetish.  Call it what it is.  Rational people do not need more than (at most), a couple hand guns or shot guns for protection.
I could see a variety if hunting, but honestly, not really needed.  That really should be the end of it.

And so what we are faced with is an industry that is making millions of dollars off gun fetishists, while the rest of us lose.  We lose.  The 2nd amendment does not protect your rights to hoard weapons.  It does not protect your right to own a military style weapon.  A weapon that trauma doctors have repeatedly testified that victims suffer immensely worse injuries and likely fatalities than "lighter" arms.  These weapons are designed to kill effectively, quickly, and en masse.  That's why the military buys them!  They serve ZERO purpose to civilians, other than to the fetishists.

Blaming mental health is a red herring.  Like opioids, there won't be money or a cultural shift to actually treat that.  These kids are not properly educated/cared for, but we're slashing those budgets too.  Arming teachers is laughable.  Hell, even the armed deputy was useless in Florida.  Background checks are not good enough with young people who may not have a record.  Or the teens could just take them from the dumb parents, like in this case, who saw nothing wrong with a juvenile delinquent owning a small arsenal.

The facts are clear.  "Responsible gun owners" simply don't make a large enough percentage of even legal gun owners.  Children accidentally shoot themselves or others constantly as it is.  The only real deterrent is to eliminate military weapons, and the modifications (bump stocks for instance) that make them even more lethal.  Nothing else will ever work.  Will it stop shootings?  No.  But it will certainly decrease the fatalities.

I was NOT a big deal, it was in fact pretty run of the mill stuff that happens all the time.  All the memo showed was that the government applied for FISA warrants due to being suspicious about Carter Page, and that the Austalians warned about Papadopoulos.  There was nothing inappropriate about any of that.  Nobody's rights were violated.  In fact, FISA warrants were granted before the infamous Christopher Steele report even came about.  Steele, btw, is not some quack, he's a highly respected intelligence officer of the British government.  You know, our former allies, not the Russians.  His investigation on Trump's Russian ties was not simply partisan, it was a warning to the US intelligence apparatus that Donald Trump could very much be manipulated by Russia.  Furthermore, they have tried to argue that the FBI investigator with the love texts was biased.  Well, that didn't work either because he's the same guy that wrote the report that reopened the Hillary email mess in 2016.

The Trump backers will believe anything he tells them, they will see conspiracies 24/7.  They are completely off their rockers.  I'm sorry, but this guy is nothing more than a Mafia-backed money launderer with a big mouth.  That's it.  He's been involved in criminal enterprises for 40+ years.  To have roughly 35% of Americans simply ignore that, and his constant lying, is really sad, but these people really would rather vote for Charles Manson than someone who doesn't jive with their politics, so I'm not surprised.

Very confusing, I will agree.  The fact that the finale of the previous season is NOW a flashforward is incredibly head spinning.  That being said, I will say that most people I know seemed to enjoy the premiere FWIW....

Again Kevin Smith made a big deal about this, and I think while not good or bad, a lot of fans felt it was ill-advised to just scrap so many TFA talking points.  That said, Rian has said he started righting the script before TFA was released, so he probably read the script at that point only.  For instance, he supposedly didn't anticipate such a cult interest in the identity of Snoke.  That said, scrapping so many plot points, or revealing highly lame answers to them, really annoyed many people.  Look, this is the job of the producers to reign something like this in.  It's bizarre, because Lucas Film seem to micromanage everything about these new films, yet went along with all of this.

Today marks 25 years since the premiere of Deep Space Nine...

The bill does provide tax savings for EVERYONE.  That is not the primary argument.  The issue is that corporations get permanent massive tax slashing, while individuals do not.  Simply cutting taxes just doesn't trickle down very much, and got news for you, most people don't work in jobs that give bonuses.  Companies are simply going to keep these savings away from employees and customers.  What's worse, the bill does nothing to tackle student loan debt, health care costs, 21st century jobs, and more.  Instead, it will add well over a trillion to the deficit.  The wealthy/corporations did not need this tax cut, and that's what most folks pretty much agree on.  They didn't need it, and they won't pass much of it down to the rest of us.  This was a huge giveaway to the financial donors of the GOP, that's it.

I've had a week to process.  It's a fun movie as I said, probably moreso than TFA, but it was lacking.  Something about the plot and the script, I don't know, it just seemed very hackneyed.  Edited badly?  Simply too much going on.  If anything, I think it was just too damn Disney.

880

(267 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)

I'm probably a week behind, but it's been a good season so far.

Enjoyable movie, but absolutely terrible writing.  Too many tedious scenes that should have been cut.  Too many parts that in the moment were very cool, but on evaluation come off ridiculous.  Plot points that you try to follow, and then get dropped or take a 180 that make your head spin.  As if this is a bad pro wrestling angle.  Tried several times to play off Rogue One.  If there was one bright spot, it was Daisy Ridley, she was fantastic.  Beyond that, far too messy a script.  This is what you get when the studio essentially writes the script and controls the editing.

Meanwhile Tarantino said to be working on a Star Trek film.  Wow.

In the meantime....

By the way, slip of the tongue or not, we have ol' Chuck Grassley who, like Orrin Hatch, both drank some truth serum and admitted that if you're not inheriting millions, you're basically a lazy, perverted, drunk.  And Hatch, who claims the country can't afford to provide healthcare for children since the children are "can't lift a finger to help themselves."  Yes, ladies and gentles, the Republican Party.

My view on Trump is simple.  Theres's zero reason to compare him, or examine his ideology, or any of that.  He has NO ideology.  He's not a Republican.  He's not truly conservative.  He's certainly an atheist.  He's fat.  He's unhealthy.  He's selfish.  He's a compulsive liar.  He has no use for the Constitution.  He has no loyalty to anyone beyond his family, and probably none there either.  He's wreckless, and on most subjects, incredibly uneducated, ignorant, and flat out stupid.  He has no loyalty to the office or to the people of the United States.

He's only concerned by his own ego.  Unfortunately, he has followers, and those followers would eat shit from a toilet if he told them to.  They immediately call any criticism of him to be politically biased, even if it comes from the right, which in and of itself makes no sense.  He's their messiah.  Too bad he's far more Joseph Smith than J.H.C.

I would hope he resigns, or is impeached, or has a heart attack from 6 Big Mac's a day, but I suppose I won't be that lucky.  His presence has done ZERO good for the country or the world.  At this point I'd take just about any politician instead, for one simple reason.....The Cult of Trump needs to end and it needs to end NOW.  Politics driven by hate, fear, and worst of all, LIES simply has to end.  It was bad before Trump, it's just not feasible now.  We cannot exist as a civilization if the truth means absolutely nothing.

Very sad to hear.  I was actually looking forward to meet his daughter at the Chiller con a few weeks ago.  Karen cancelled however, as one might expect.

Roddenberry was very, very anal about writing things into continuity that made no sense or conflicted with what was done before in major ways.  At the end of the day, it had a lot of plot holes if you will, but it was and still is a fun movie.

As for Wil, he just appeared at a convention where he prohibited fans from touching him during the photo ops.

Don't be coy - you were in town to film Ib's fan fiction extravaganza "SLIDERMAN"

NEVER!  Only in Vancouver!

That's cool. He films in North Bay, Ontario (for a new series Carter), and I think he commutes back home every weekend, so he's probably in the airport quite a bit.  Did he remember your encounter with him at all for the broadway show? (Once Upon a Sandwich or something?)

Ohhhh, I didn't know he was on a new show.  Didn't remember me, he meets thousands of people I'm sure.

I think the bottom line, regardless of what side you are on or whatnot, was that Trump was CLEARLY unwilling to come down hard against white nationalism.  Also, Antifa is called far left.  Wouldn't anyone who defies facism by definition be middle of the road?

I'd assume Trump would be one of two things to The X-Files lore....some kind of alien masquerading as a President, aka an X-File himself.  OR someone who is rabidly interested in the program, I mean, he's basically the editor of the National Enquirer.

The show has unfortunately devolved into a soap.  Out of ideas.  Season was pretty bad arc-wise.  Now they're saying there's NO end in sight, and old characters will return, I guess from the dark universe, IDK.

Meanwhile Trump and co. are just racking up the potential obstruction of justice complaints.  I also give props to the Boy Scouts of America for publicly disassociating themselves from Trump, who gave a profanity filled, stump speech that had no place there.  I wouldn't care if this guy had the politics of Bernie Sanders, he's a habitual liar, he has zero interest in governing or the American people.  It's all about him and his dumb family.  And no Donald, the White House is not a big dump!!!!!!!  It's not about lavish, it's about service.  You sir are simply pathetic.

Rogue One was a terrific film for Star Wars fans, but with a Mission Impossible or James Bond feel for most of the film.  I think it's finally on Netflix so I may give it another watch tonight!

PS: Most of those CG people were in fact not CG!  ha ha.

Well, remember, my taste when it comes to Marvel is unorthodox.  I prefer the individual stories, rather than the conglomerated mess called Avengers.  I also need buy in.  Give me a reason to watch your stupid series from start to finish.  Iron Fist did that.  Cage and Jones did the opposite.  Heck, Legion did it even moreso.

Or - and here's a shocking idea! - give every American the same health care plan members of Congress have.

I've been for that for years.

Finished Iron Fist on Netflix. Hands down the best series they've done in MCU so far. Great story, action, stunts, as well as acting. Episode flow was terrific, something MCU/Netflix is abysmal at.

Wheaton could be making a steady paycheck at conventions, but he doesn't do many.  In fact, I've read/heard many stories about him being less than friendly, if not plain rude with fans.
