Voyager always had better ideas for episodes than they had episodes.  They're the poster child for good concept/bad execution.

I recently finished a DS9 rewatch and had the same problems with it I did the first time.  Too much time spent on mundane topics.  O'Brien infiltrating the mob, Bajoran religion, Vic Fontaine, trying to fix the Ferengi, AAAAH.  Can I have some science fiction in my science fiction, please?

Roddenberry's "vision" changed quite a bit between TOS and TNG.  Look at Ensign Martine weeping in the Enterprise chapel for her dead fiance during BALANCE OF TERROR and try to reconcile that with the notion that Federation people have evolved beyond grieving.  Compare Kirk's handwaving of the Prime Directive in FOR THE WORLD IS HOLLOW AND I HAVE TOUCHED THE SKY and RETURN OF THE ARCHONS to Picard and Janeway sentencing whole worlds to destruction through slavish devotion to it.

Of course a lot of Gene's "vision" for TNG came from fans of TOS rather than the other way around.  He thought he was giving people what they wanted with TNG, much like he did when he created TOS as "Wagon Train to the Stars".

Going back to the question of whether the Sliders are superheroes, I recently started reading The Evolution of the Costumed Avenger: The 4,000-Year History of the Superhero by Jess Nevins.  It's a fascinating look into the history and antecedents of the modern comic book hero.  Nevins claims the defining characteristic of a hero to be a selfless mission.  I don't think that describes the Sliders, whose primary mission was always to get home.

The languages and the translator thing were very inconsistent.  Picard would sometimes throw in a French phrase or even Qapla' when speaking to a Klingon and it somehow knew he didn't want it translated.  It was also advanced enough to translate figures of speech without turning them into "The wine is good but the meat is spoiled" or some such.  Luckily none of the aliens we ran into had sayings that got mangled in a literal translation.

pilight, I didn't mean to ignore the links you posted. They didn't show up as links when I first read the post for some reason.

The thing to note is that the article keeps referring to violent crimes, which require a criminal to threaten a victim. This would not include a lot of border crimes, including (but not limited to) illegally crossing. It wouldn't include burglaries, trespassing, shoplifting, or any number of crimes. Not to split hairs, but if we are looking at crime statistics, you can't discount most types of crime.

Also, I doubt that illegals stay in border towns once they cross over. That'd be a bit like breaking into someone's house and then unpacking in the guest room.

You can't seriously be suggesting we need a gazillion dollar wall to keep out shoplifters and trespassers.  There must be a more cost effective way to deal with such things.

Ocampa only live to age nine.  Very little about that race makes sense, however.

As covered before, if terrorists are the concern then the wall needs to be on the other border.

As for crime, the data doesn't support your conclusion.  Crime rates are lower along the border.  The wall isn't going to stop trafficking in drugs or humans as long as the CBP is working with the cartels.

Punishing people for coming here illegally because we won't allow them to come legally based on an arbitrary quota is an exercise in circular logic.  It's like limiting the number of people who can use a crosswalk then arresting people who jaywalk.

Throwing open the doors didn't work?  Nonsense.  We had no immigration quotas on Mexico at all until the 1960's.  Nobody had a problem with it.  Closing the doors is what hasn't worked.

What countries have built a wall to separate themselves from a close, historical ally?

They were equally ineffective, however, as spending, debt, and taxes have all increased since the start of the tea party movement.  Also, the tea party was quickly taken over by social conservatives, muddling the original message of less government interference in people's lives.

Sometimes it's tough.  Alien and Aliens are movies in different genres.  How can you compare them?

And then there's those times when you disagree with the crowd...

I'll take Star Wars over Empire any day
Temple of Doom is the worst Indiana Jones film
Harold & Kumar's 3D Christmas is the best of that series

Perhaps, but we have viable alternatives to cable. But the people who are trying to keep it from being used aren't the oil companies (who, again, aren't nearly as powerful as people make them seem), they're the environmentalists and politicians who create regulations.

Politicians create regulation largely at the request of their contributors, like oil companies.  That's why they contribute, after all.

Create a writers bible for them, so that everyone knows who they are, what they do, and why.  All we know about them from Seasons 2 & 3 are what they told the Sliders in Invasion, which may not be true, and what alt-Quinn said in The Other Side of Darkness, which may not be accurate since he's lost his mind.
