I saw SUPERGIRL and I thought it was a delightful and charming James Gunn film not made by James Gunn.
The vitriol slung towards it is bizarre to me as, judging from the box office, not many people actually saw it and whatever's caused the movie to fail is not within the movie itself since the financial failure is based on people not actually watching it.
My sense, looking at the bland posters and bland trailers and laughable lip-gloss tie-in is that, like BIRDS OF PREY, the Warner Bros. marketing department has lost the ability to market a movie for women.

It was getting attacked because of something Milly Adcock said about male fans. I haven't seen it yet. The most disappointing thing is that I really like the comic it's loosely based on, and I hear it isn't a super faithful adaptation. Which is sad because it probably could've had the Zach Snyder Watchmen treatment and been pretty great.
But I'm hoping to see it in the next couple of weeks.

I am not really a big fan of Milly Alcock's public persona for a variety of reasons, but they have nothing to do with her performance.
SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW is... Tom King has an extremely stylized approach to dialogue that reads to me as unnatural and strained. I found it really awkward on his BATMAN run as well. ("Cat." "Bat." "The boat." "The street." "The boat." "The street.") He also has a tendency to use time skips that I find incredibly disorienting and difficult to follow.
People really like King's work. It's obvious that it has its merits and has won many fans; I'm just not one of them. I absolutely do not see this style of writing translating effectively to live action films. His dialogue is not designed for an actor to deliver it. Whatever its strengths or flaws, King's comic book writing is an experiencing in reading the words atop the images, and film is not about reading, so much had to change.
I really like the movie. I'm not saying anyone has to like it, but I doubt the level of hatred that exists for it is about anything within it because so few people actually saw it.

I really like Tom King. I enjoyed his run on Batman, which I read recently, and I've enjoyed a lot of his one-off stories (Vision, Human Target, etc, although the one I haven't read is Mister Miracle).
I guess when I say adapt it, I'm referring to the artwork. The art in Woman of Tomorrow is so striking, and it seems like all that color got washed out for the movie. A YouTuber I like quite a bit, Nando v Movies, said the worst thing that could've happened to Supergirl was Project Hail Mary. That movie has a sequence that is so bright and colorful and would've fit in perfectly in a Woman of Tomorrow adaptation. Then the movie comes out and it's all brown and gray. I haven't seen it so maybe that's a function of the story, but the story in Woman of Tomorrow is heavy and sad and depressing a lot, but there's still plenty of color and wonder.
And I agree that the dialogue in the book wouldn't translate, but it's also mostly voiceover. A lot would have to be translated to dialogue, but I think a lot of the feel and look of the story could've been preserved. Maybe it was. I hope to see it next week.

A lot of people enjoy Tom King's work. I don't think he's bad, his style just doesn't work for me personally. As for the art.. well, the colouring in the WOMAN OF TOMORROW trade paperback that I read is indeed very nice and richly saturated. It's a gorgeous looking set of pages. But that's a comic book.
Certainly, live action film can be very rich; RussianCabbieLotteryFan is always talking about how he adores the remaster of BACK TO THE FUTURE where all the colours where ampled up to pop off the screen rather than looking like the desaturated 80s film that it was before. But I would say that SUPERGIRL benefits from a brown, grayed out world, because when Supergirl finally puts on the uniform, it looks vivid and in stark contrast to the dark world around her.
