Topic: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

We have seen sequels, sequels and more sequels nowadays and rarely does the "twos" measure up to the original but there are some that break the trend.
Here's a list of some well knowns and which do we or you prefer:

Frankenstein v Bride of Frankenstein-----Bride of Frankenstein
Alien  v. Aliens                                      Aliens
Terminator v. Terminator 2 JD               Terminator
Casino Royale v. Quantum of Solace       Casino Royale
Rocky 3 v. Rocky 4 ( a break from my trend)  Rocky 3
Fantastic Four v. Rise of Silver Surfer      Silver Surfer
Batman Begins  v. The Dark Knight        Batman Begins  ( I just found DK too dark. I'm in the minority here...)
Star Wars v. Empire Strikes Back            Empire Strikes Back
Wolf man  v. Frankenstein meets Wolf man    Wolf Man
Predator  v. Predator 2                            Predator

Feel free to comment and add your own lists as well.

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

As far as movies where I prefer a sequel-

Hot Shots Part Deux (I like the first but Part Deux is near perfect spoof)

Scary Movie 3 (I like the original better than 2 but 3 is the best)

Back To the Future Part II (most super fans of the IP like part 2 the best due to the most amount of time travel and the "future" act).

Naked Gun 33 1/3 (even better than the first, but 2 1/2 is by far the worst of the 3)

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

And to the original poster- I preferred Dark Knight over Batman Begins

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

Funny, right after I posted a friend posted on Facebook about the Purge movies and I definitely agree with him that Purge: Anarachy (#2) was the best of the 3. I did enjoy all of them though. But 2 should've been the original movie.

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

Hard to say. I really enjoy Batman Begins, but The Dark Knight is a more "pure" Batman movie, since they're not retelling the origin again. But as with most things, I think my preference would depend on my mood.

Star Trek II is definitely better than Star Trek The Motion Picture (and some sequels are even better than that)
Terminator 2 is better than Terminator, I think... and if you want to get real wacky, TSCC is the best of them.

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

Sometimes it's easy to pick the better film: Grease 2, Son of the Mask, Blues Brothers 2000, etc.

Sometimes it's tough.  Alien and Aliens are movies in different genres.  How can you compare them?

And then there's those times when you disagree with the crowd...

I'll take Star Wars over Empire any day
Temple of Doom is the worst Indiana Jones film
Harold & Kumar's 3D Christmas is the best of that series
Rocky Balboa is the best of the Rocky sequels
Superman III isn't that bad

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

Temple of Doom is really bad... Crystal Skull is a hate crime against all of humanity.

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

It really depends on whether the director changes.  Most of the ones cited involve different directors, writers, etc.  In some cases, a film went from lower budget to blockbuster (Terminator).  I actually prefer it when sequels involve different production teams, as a new light can be shown on them.  Sometimes that works out very badly.

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

You are right. Alien and Aliens are two completely different genres (and directors)
T2 has all the flashing lights and bells and whistles but I will always take The Terminator over T2

all Predator entries  after the original Predator are a waste of time

I heard Creed was pretty good, the latest entry into the Rocky franchise.

Attack of the Clones is better than Phantom Menace

Ironically I have only saw Empire Strikes Back one time and that was during its initial release in 1980 (between you and me I always had a soft spot for Return of the Jedi...)

I enjoyed Alien vs Predator quite a bit

Re: Favorites and their Sequels: How do you rank them?

Speaking of Predator, did anyone here read the Archie Vs Predator comic books? As a longtime Archie comics fan, that 4 issue mini series was really good. Even if you're not an Archie fan, I definitely recommend it. Dark Horse published it. I'd love to see that made into a movie.
