Absolutely. I don't know why Jessica Jones wasn't more procedural. I think it was Alan Sepinwall who said that Killgrave should've developed more slowly. She handles a handful of cases throughout the first half of the season that all point toward Killgrave. Then the second half of the season revolves around trying to find and capture/kill him. Then there would've been less ridiculous moments of them catching him and him constantly getting away.

Yeah, it was odd. When they were separated in time, I thought "oh, this is kinda a cool way of dealing with the season. They'll be separated in time, doing their own thing, and then each week will be a mission to put the team back together before they fight Thawne and Darhk."
Then, five minutes later, it's all back to normal. I thought they were going to have Sara reference how badass it would've been for Ray to survive with dinosaurs for as long as he did, but they didn't. I also wondered why they couldn't have just gone back to find him before he was ever in any danger.
The show is lazy. But I do think it's watchable. Easily the worst of the Arrowverse shows. Or do you think Supergirl is still worse, Info?

The British Men of Letters idea is still pretty cool to me. The idea of a network of wards and sigils allowing them to track monsters before they do any damage is pretty sweet, but it sorta reminds me of how Europeans talk about (insert issue) working in their country and how the US could install their system to work better.
The problem is that England is the size of Alabama. Warding "Every thoroughfare, every bridge, every dock, every airport" in England would've taken years. It'd take decades in the US, even if they had an army of people doing it. The British way is unquestionably the better way, but it's not exactly practical.
I do really like the idea of a high-tech system tracking monsters before they do damage, though. I'm curious to see how this is going to play out. I'd love to see what the British MoL plan is.

I haven't started it yet and probably won't for a while. I've liked the Netflix series so far, but they need to cut back from 13 episodes. Daredevil (both seasons) and Jessica Jones have struggled with pacing for that many episodes. I've read Luke Cage suffers from the same issues.

Okay, we need an official timeline for this whole universe because when did Oliver have time to run off to New York with some "time historian" to dig up a submarine? These crossovers are cool, and I love that the actors are willing to do them. I thought the Felicity guest appearance on Flash was really genuine and cool, and I thought Oliver's part made sense from a character perspective. But he's mayor and full-time solo vigilante on Arrow. Taking a random trip would be harmful to both, and they don't really explain it. He kept saying he was busy but apparently not too busy.
I didn't hate the premiere, but the show just doesn't do much for me. I think I'm more excited to see Darhk and Thawne work together than anything else. I still think Legends needed to be an anthology show. They could be doing cool stories that the rest of the Arrowverse can't do.
Arrow, I think, was pretty good. I'm liking these flashbacks more than previous ones, and I like the way the team is coming together. I like Oliver's character a lot more this year, and Felicity has been more fun now that she's not carrying so much emotional baggage. Considering the mess the Flash has been so far, I think Arrow might be the best of the shows right now.

I don't think that Kasich could beat her. Hillary was never going to play fair or be nice, and he couldn't take her on. He would look weak and forgettable. Ryan, I have to doubt as well. He's seen as a sellout by a lot of people in the party. Many don't even want him to have the job he has at this point.
As long as it wasn't someone with a laundry list of controversies, they would've won. The problem with Cruz is that he turns people off. It's a similar situation to Hillary, actually. Hillary was unlikable before we even know anything about her. She just turns people off. It's the opposite of "it"
The way to beat Hillary is to let the attention be on her. The only reason she's winning is that 100% of the attention is on Trump. A boring Republican would beat her in a landslide because she can't divert attention anywhere.
And let's not pretend that Bill is any better than Trump. They run in the same circles, and they both spent a ton of time with Jeffrey Epstein. If Bill ran today, it'd be a ton of the same stuff. But, again, I don't think he ever really wanted to be president. I'm sure he loved the fame that came with it, though.

I think Cruz would've been close. I think Kasich or Ryan would've destroyed her. I'm not sure Pence wouldn't have won pretty handily if they'd dug him out of mothballs to run.
Jeb or Rubio, I don't know.
But I think all of them could've beaten her. She has nothing to say positively about herself. And I think if she were running against anyone else, the "most qualified candidate ever" would have been researched and debunked. The media was too busy with all of Trump's BS to even look into it. Or, honestly, even recognize who she's running against.

Even if they did find other world with Kromaggs, that doesn't mean they would automatically join the Dynasty. Think about what the reaction would be on our Earth if humans claiming to be from another dimension suddenly appeared in highly advanced ships. How many people would support becoming part of their empire?
You're watching this election, right?

Re: DC Superheroes on TV & Streaming (1966 - 2024) (1,683 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
I think that fact could be the biggest influence on changes in history. There would no longer be a reason for Eobard to kill Earth 1 Harrison Wells - Eobard wouldn't even be there to do it. The events of season one would have played out very differently; but I guess not enough to be screamingly obvious on first glance. Supporting this - season one Barry also disappeared from Nora's death scene meaning that Barry never traveled back in time at the end of season one. Eobard wasn't there to get him to do it.
Yeah but that opens up a huge can of worms that I don't think the show can really handle. And there's already cracks in the wall of that. Jay referred to his Wells as "Harry." Which is correct - that's what they called him based on Season One.
But if Thawne didn't become Wells and go evil, there wouldn't have been any reason to call Earth-2 Wells "Harry". The only reason they did is because it creeped them out to call him Dr. Wells when he ended up being evil. It could be a coincidence (it isn't a clever nickname - Earth-2 Wells might've gone by Harry anyway), but it's one of those little things that they might not pick up on.

My only thought is that speedsters work outside of normal physics. So maybe they can't detect changes in time created by speedsters? Only "traditional" time machines?

Re: The Kromagg Dynasty makes no sense (25 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
But, statistically, that's sorta ridiculous. It's like walking out your front door and basing your entire opinion on the universe based on what you see. There are infinite worlds. The Kromaggs could've sent a million people through a million wormholes once a day for a hundred years, and they'd barely scrape the surface on the number of worlds there are.
I prefer to think of the multiverse in terms of the Earth itself, and worlds that you can slide to are all pretty similar to the ones around it. The Sliders go to a ton of worlds, but there's not a ton of key differences. Almost all evolved life. Almost all evolved (identically evolved) humans. Almost all evolved pretty similarly in terms of language and culture. Statistically, you should be able to slide a lifetime and not see more than one world where the United States exists in the form we know it (considering how insignificant the US is in the grand scheme of the universe).
So in my example, the Sliders spend their entire time sliding in one part of one city. Humans evolved. Everything is generally pretty similar to the worlds around them. Some minor political differences but generally the same. The sliders' timer is the equivalent of walking.
The Kromaggs are in a different part of the city. Still mammals. Still bipedal. Still primate-evolved. But not humans...so it's a different part of the same city. To get to the other part of town, you'd need something else. A car. A train. A taxi. Something Quinn never developed. Maybe (some) Kromaggs did.
In other parts of the world, there are other cities. Dominant life that evolved from fish. Or dinosaurs. Or something completely different. This would definitely take a train or a car or a plane.
Then there's other parts of the world where life either doesn't exist or doesn't exist in a form we'd recognize or understand. You'd need something really strong (plane, ship, spacecraft) to get to that part of the world.
In my example, Kromagg prime would actually be in the human part of town which is why humans could slide there and Kromaggs could only slide to "human" worlds.
So the way I understand branching would lead me to believe that there are just as many human worlds as Kromagg worlds and mermaid worlds and dinosaur worlds. The Sliders didn't interact with them because their technology limited them to the area they could "walk" to. And it would only require the creation of better tech to see what else the multiverse could show.

SPECULATION ON THE MAN IN BLACK
*
*
*
*
*
*
There's a rumor that he's actually the same guy as William. If you look at some hints, there's some indication some of the action takes place at a different time period:
- The head security officer said that an incident happened in the park 30 years ago. The Man in Black says he's been coming to the park for 30 years.
- In the first episode, they show a run-down part of the building with escalators and a giant Delos corporation globe. It looks like a lobby....suspiciously like the same lobby that William enters when he arrives at Westworld (shown at a different angle but similar).
- When William goes up the escalator, a promo for Westworld is shown with a retro-70s looking logo. In the background of the lead writer's presentation this week, a different sleeker logo for Westworld is shown. It could've easily been updated in 30 years.
- William is attracted to Dolores at first and the MiB indicates that they've had a history together that she never remembers. The only other Host we've seen him with that has existed in the MiB storyline is Clementine (the Host at the brothel), and when they talked about getting rid of Maeve (the madam), they mentioned that Clementine would be promoted to the madam because she's been there before.
- As they are walking into town in the first episode, the Sheriff is recruiting people to help hunt down the killer from the first episode. When William walks into town, it's a Union soldier recruiting people. It could simply be that the Sheriff was malfunctioning and/or the killer storyline ended, but it could also be an earlier storyline that they did.
As far as I know, there's no evidence that directly disproves it. The hardest evidence to argue about is the idea that the Hosts used to be pretty noticeable when they first started, but we don't really know how long the park has been in service. There's a chance that the park has been around for 50 years, and the robots were perfected 20 years later. That would leave the robots to be indistinguishable from humans in both time periods. I've also seen people argue that the crazy prospector from episode 2 is proof that the robots *aren't* perfect in William's time.

WikiLeaks and Assange are doing their hacks the same way. If they have an October surprise that anyone would care about (and I think anything short of concrete evidence of a murder doesn't stop her from winning), they're holding onto it as late as possible. Re: American Politics: Discuss and Debate (3,508 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Yeah, that's the crazy stuff to me. Almost all this stuff is at least a decade old. How did none of it come out during the primaries?
I don't believe most conspiracy theories, but the whole election (from start to finish) being orchestrated by the Clintons is one that makes sense to me.
- Trump and the Clintons are friends and have been for a long time.
- Bill Clinton, according to several noted sources, is the one who convinced Trump to run.
- Many democrats reportedly voted Trump to help him win the republican primary
- The media holds on to all Trump-related negative stories until after the primary is over and it's too late for the Republicans to course-correct.
- Many of Trump's more-awful moments happened right after (or the same day) as Clinton's worst moments (he praised Saddam the same day as the Comey announcement, the Trump tapes came out the same day as the Clinton speeches)
- Trump hasn't released his taxes. If Trump was paid any amount of money to run, that payment would show up in his taxes. It's a point to make Hillary look strong and Donald look weak.
- Trump gets money, fame, notoriety. Hillary gets to beat the only candidate that she could easily beat.

Re: American Politics: Discuss and Debate (3,508 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Okay, this might come out as garbled, but hopefully my point comes across.
I think this election is doing irreparable harm to the country. Because these two candidates are so hated (and don't get me wrong, they are hated), people are becoming more polarized than ever. No matter how bad your candidate is, the only way to "elevate" your candidate is to attack the other. Hillary supporters are exclusively talking about Trump, and Trump supporters are exclusively talking about Hillary.
I saw a post today from a casual acquaintance telling his friends to unfriend him if they support Trump and the idea of repealing the 19th amendment. And while I agree that it's a dumb idea, I didn't like the sentiment. The media reported that a poll says people are losing friends because of this election. We're willing to disrupt connections we've made because people are making a choice. That bothers me.
And I think it's because we have so many ways of filtering the way we get media. On social media, we can choose to follow only people who think like us. If you follow only Trump people, you could get the idea that Trump is going to easily win the election. If you follow only Hillary people, you could get the idea that Trump is actually much worse than Hitler. And when you only get one side of the argument, you can start to de-humanize the other side. They aren't people anymore, and that's how these friendships are dissolving.
The media isn't helping. Fox News has routinely been accused of leaning right, but I'm seeing a ton of the other networks leaning way further left than usual. CNN has been accused of being the Clinton News Network, but as a former journalist, I'm seeing a lot more editorializing than I'm comfortable with. During the Republican convention, CNN usually put together a huge panel (10-12 people) that was usually pretty even. During the Democratic convention, it was usually 80% Democrats with one or two Trump people. The other night, I saw a panel that was 5 Hillary supporters and one Trump supporter. A lot of times, CNN will throw Ana Navarro on a panel as a Republican, but she's anti-Trump. So CNN is quickly becoming Fox News.
(Fox News isn't even trying anymore. They'll do panels of just Trump supporters or bring on a Hillary person and simply antagonize them for the entire segment)
People are going to disagree. Your friends are going to disagree. But that used to be something we wanted. We wanted people around us who thought differently so we could learn a different perspective. That's how compromises are made. But when we completely close out one person's idea, there's no longer room for compromise. I surround myself with people who think like me, and you do the same. Instead of trying to understand how the other side thinks, we do the opposite. Trump is Hitler so Hillary is Antichrist. Before we know it, both are the Devil. And so their supporters must be devil worshipers.
At least we have this place still.

The problem with the Wikileaks stuff is that people don't care anymore. People are so disgusted by Trump that they'll basically accept whatever Hillary does. I think a tape could come out of Hillary dropping a half-dozen N-bombs, and she'd still win in a landslide. There could be proof that Hillary manipulated the process, and I don't think enough people would be upset.

Re: DC Superheroes on TV & Streaming (1966 - 2024) (1,683 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Well, what's weird is that we're now in a third timeline. There's the timeline where Barry became the Flash when he was older (not seen), the Season 1-2 Flash timeline where Thawne messed with everything, and now this new Flashpoint timeline. And while they did a lot to show that things *mostly* happened the way that they were supposed to (they still took down Zoom, Reverse Flash, etc), there are still quite a few differences too.
We're now in Fringe season 4 territory (which doesn't make me feel better) where we aren't really watching the same characters we've been watching this whole time. Which does bother me. I get making Barry pay for his mistakes, and hopefully this convinces him to stop time traveling. But I thought this was a lesson Barry had learned already. It's what makes Flashpoint so frustrating....Barry has *just* come to terms with his mother's death before he went back and saved her.

There is no decency here. There is no good option. right now, I'm thinking in terms of cutting off limbs in order to save the patient's life.
That's sorta where I land.
I was watching CNN and they were talking about Trump abusing presidential power to go after his enemies. How he's talked about going after certain republicans, going after Hillary, going after other people.
And while that's silly and embarrassing, it's not dangerous. Trump wasting time working on a wall that will never (in a million years) get built is stupid but not dangerous. Trump threatening to deport people that the government has no ability to find (let alone deport) is stupid but not dangerous.
Starting a new Cold War is dangerous. Prodding Putin until he starts World War III is dangerous. Putting more troops in the Middle East to fight a war in Syria is just going to stir up the ISIS hornet's nest further. That's dangerous. Bringing in tons of Syrian refugees when a) ISIS has said they'll sneak their guys in with them and b) we have absolutely no way of vetting them is dangerous.
I don't see Trump as dangerous. I see him as an idiot who will spend the next four years accomplishing nothing and enjoying the fame part of being president. I've yet to see anyone with any actual reasons to fear Trump because the guy doesn't have any real positions of anything. I know that Hillary will invade Syria because there's tons of evidence to point to that. In my opinion, there's no reason to fear Trump because he's all talk.

Re: American Politics: Discuss and Debate (3,508 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
As I've said from the start, as bad as Hillary is, she will not be a daily embarrassment to the United States. Trump would be.
Okay, but embarrassment is one thing. Would you rather send troops to Syria to fight Hillary's version of the Iraq War? Do you want to restart the Cold War because Hillary wants to kill Putin's friend? I'd rather be embarrassed than dead, and Hillary's more likely to get me killed.
People always use the nukes thing with Trump, but they seem to think we live in a world where the President has a big button on his desk with "NUKES" written on it. To fire off a nuclear weapon, the president's command has to go through a handful of really smart people who are really good at their jobs. Even if Trump wanted to nuke Paraguay because they made fun of him, there's a better chance Trump would end up impeached due to massive overuse of power than any missile would ever leave the ground.
Now restart the Cold War? That's how nuclear devastation happens.

Re: The Kromagg Dynasty makes no sense (25 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Well, I think it depends on a couple factors, and season 4 isn't a great resource for answering either question:
- (An old standard) - How does branching work?
- What kind of technology do the Kromaggs have?
- (Secret third question) - what is the definition of "conquer?"
Let's start with technology. You're right in the sense that technology and surprise would make an invasion pretty easy. The Kromaggs could send in human slaves (or even their own scouts, if properly disguised) to scout the world - find the military powers, and strike. They could slide wherever they want and wipe out military bases with very little damage. Imagine a Pearl Harbor-like attack from a Japan we didn't even know existed on a global scale. The US, China, Europe, Russia, the Middle East, India/Pakistan wiped out simultaneously. It'd take a coordinated attack, but I'm not even sure it'd take that many troops.
So invasion is easy.
Now let's talk about what "conquer" means. Does conquering mean that they held the area indefinitely? Or would it count as conquering if they simply took control for a long-enough time to take what they wanted (slaves/resources) and get out? When they say they've conquered 150 worlds, are they still maintaining a presence in all 150?
And if they maintain an indefinite presence, does that necessarily mean that all soldiers on the conquered Earths are Kromaggs? Look at the world in the USA show Colony. Aliens (allegedly) invaded and conquered the Earth. Then they set up a provisional government led by human traitors. Not a single alien boot on the ground, and the Earth is still conquered. If the Kromaggs used mind control or simply the threat of additional force, would that be enough? Would Kromagg weapons in human traitor hands be enough to hold the worlds?
And if it was, could a skeleton crew of Kromaggs (skeleton being as few as possible - a million? less?) hold the Earth with advanced-enough technology? In Colony, there are drones all over the place. Could that work to keep an Earth "conquered?"
Now let's talk about one of my favorite topics - branching. As far as I'm aware, branching happens all the time with each decision. Whether it's only big decisions (George Washington is shot or not) or minor decisions too (do I get a chicken or steak in my burrito) is up for debate, but either way, it's decision-based.
And the human/Kromagg decision was a looooong time ago. Enough time for millions of human-led worlds to be created. Presumably, that would also mean that there would be enough branching from Kromagg-led worlds to create millions of Kromagg-led worlds. I always assumed that the Kromagg dynasty was made up of thousands of Kromagg worlds that united. If that's the case, there's a nearly-unlimited source of additional troops to hold (way more than) 150 worlds.
"Kromagg Prime" implies that it's the main homeworld of the Kromaggs, but our sliders call our world "Earth Prime" arbitrarily. To Logan, her Earth would be "Earth Prime" and ours would be "that weird Earth where the trains suck." So I always thought it was just that type of naming.
(Please note that there's a chance that almost all my arguments are invalidated by season 4, which I haven't seen in a really long time).

Well, to address some of your concerns:
- I don't know why we'd expect a guest star on a CW to show a great depth of character in one episode. To compare Man of Steel's Henry Cavill to Superman in Supergirl is insulting to both mediums. Of course Clark in MoS is a deeper, more structured character. He'd absolutely have to be. And while I agree that he's a bit cartoonish, I think that's absolutely what they were going for. He's a fun Superman. He's got things figured out, and he's content with it. He's a "perfect" character that our heroine is supposed to be achieving to be. And since he's not going to be a regular on the show (at least, not that I'm aware of), I think his role in the show is fine.
(Side note: I don't want this to turn into another psychoanalysis of Superman, but I still say Superman in this showed more personality with his one wink than he did in both movies of the DCCU. Compare the wink to the crestfallen look he gives the people at the fire. In both cases, Superman has saved the day - why not have some fun with it? It's like Supergirl's Superman gets an (what I would think is a realistic) adrenaline boost from flying around, and Snyder's Superman gets a boost of painkillers. Again, they probably went too far in this one, but there's a happy medium where a character can be layered and still be allowed to have fun).
I hated the James/Kara relationship, and I'm glad they're moving away from it. I don't like this version of Jimmy - I think he's miscast (and not because he's black - because he's a freakin' male model. Can they do a body-swap of James and Curtis? I think Curtis' actor would play a better Jimmy Olsen).
The kryptonite thing is weird because it's been established in many versions of Superman that he *wants* people to have kryptonite in case he goes crazy. It's possible that this version of Superman has never been affected by magic or red Kryptonite so maybe he's never lost control. And I get that there's a difference between giving Batman a sliver of kryptonite and the DEO having a cache of weapons. So while I think J'onn could've been a little bit more proactive about ensuring Superman that the weapons are safe, I think Clark was flipping out just a bit too much.
Oh and was that the first official use of "Gotham" in the Arrowverse? I know they've mentioned Bludhaven a few times, but I wasn't sure if Gotham was ever actually referenced.

Supergirl -
The move from LA to Vancouver was noticeable, but I didn't feel like there was really any drop in quality from a CBS to CW show. I thought it was fun with a lot of potentially cool stuff set up. I thought Superman was fun but not overpowering in the episode.
And Superman....smiled.

Question, re: Clark/Kara. When there's a major space launch or event that they might have to immediately get called to rescue....why aren't they more prepared? Kara was super excited to watch the launch of the Venture, and it doesn't seem like Clark was even paying attention to it. You'd think either of them (or both) would've been suited up and ready to go...just in case.

Re: 1997 Tracy Torme DragonCon Panel on DVD (34 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
We're still limiting this to the idea that Sliders was only going to go 5 seasons. What if it was a smash hit, of the level of X-Files? Are we really confident that all four actors would've been happy to devote a decade of their lives to the show? If Chris Carter had his way, we'd be entering season 23 of the X-Files with Duchovny and Anderson continuing the roles. And while I'm sure they loved the show and the work, eventually both Duchovny and Anderson decided to move on, and there was nothing Carter could do. He had to create Doggett and Reyes to keep the show on the air.
(I acknowledge this is a dangerous argument I'm making since you know a ton about the behind the scenes on the X Files and I'm speculating).
If Torme is to Sliders what Carter was to X-Files, then Torme would've stayed on board all ten seasons of Sliders and would've had to deal with different actors and new characters. Or maybe he wouldn't have, and he would've decided to end the show (or walk way) instead of breaking up the band, as it were. All I'm saying is that if Torme was going to come up with new characters, Maggie and Mallory aren't awful on paper and can be worked with. Even Colin is an intriguing character on paper - a true fish out of water who could've brought back some of the wonder of sliding if done correctly.

Re: 1997 Tracy Torme DragonCon Panel on DVD (34 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
No, I get that. But stuff happens in TV. One of the regulars could've died. I'm sure the writers of 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter didn't expect John Ritter to die, but he did. And they had to adjust. And maybe John had to be fired to leave, but what if they'd run into a situation like ST:TNG faced with Denise Crosby? I'm sure they had great plans for Tasha Yar, but they had to adjust.
(I know none of the actors are dead, even now, but it was possible).
Not to mention the fact that the show's longevity could've changed things. Jared and Jensen on Supernatural, staying for over a decade, is the exception...not the rule. Mulder and Scully both left X-Files. Everyone but Tom Welling left Smallville.
Maybe Jerry's movie career (which started/continued while he was still doing Sliders) could've taken off earlier. Maybe Mission to Mars could've been a bigger success, and he'd want to get out of his contract then. Maybe Sabrina still could've wanted to leave Sliders to go get a job working with Aaron Sorkin. Maybe nostalgia could've forced JRD to leave and create a number of Sallah-based Indiana Jones spinoff movies.
If he hates the characters because they weren't his vision, that's fine. But if he was in the same situation, for whatever reason, he would've had to have adjusted accordingly. If it were me, I'd be more upset at what they did with *his* characters than what they did with creations of their own.
But that's just me.

Re: 1997 Tracy Torme DragonCon Panel on DVD (34 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
I think that what Tracy says goes is meaningful on two levels. The first is that SLIDERS as aired exists in stark contradiction to his wishes. He thought Quinn being from Kromagg Prime was absurd. He thought the Season 4 Space Nazis were ridiculous. He was disgusted with John and Sabrina's exits and he despised Maggie and Mallory.
I think that's one of Tracy's flaws. In execution, the S4 Kromaggs, Mallory, and Maggie are all concepts that were flawed. On paper, I think they're ideas with a great deal of merit.
- Just like there are many varieties of human, there'd almost certainly be many varieties of Kromagg. Some might be cold and calculated like the ones in Invasion, and some would almost certainly be aggressive and want to establish a multidimensional empire. After all, sliding technology and Kromagg military tech would allow many worlds to be taken over relatively easily. I imagine if the show had continued, there would've certainly been a human equivalent to the Kromagg Dynasty - it makes logical sense that a militaristic society with access to sliding would use it to enslave lesser worlds.
- Maggie is another character that works on paper. Imagine if, say, Zoe McLellan were hired as Maggie. She's a tough captain from a dying world. She'd bring fascinating perspective to the group, having grown up on a parallel Earth, and she'd provide skills and knowledge that the Sliders didn't otherwise have. The character works on paper. And, for at least some of her time on the show, the character worked on screen.
- Mallory is another example, and I almost think it's the type of character that Tracy himself would've come up with if he had to replace Quinn at any point. Fraternal double make too much sense to never have appeared on Sliders. And to be able to just keep Quinn going with a different actor is basically a writer's best case scenario, right?
Tracy didn't like anything that didn't fit in with his vision for the show, but I think his vision for the show could be rather myopic. Which is fine....most fanfic writers fall into the same creative hole and end up with the four original sliders in a story.

Re: DC Superheroes on TV & Streaming (1966 - 2024) (1,683 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Well, I think your part about Gordon is the problem. Take the kidnapper, for example. These shows don't show it, but there's going to have to be an investigation into that guy's death. In the official report, it'd have to say that he was killed by the Green Arrow. The kill could be justified - officers are forced to kill suspects all the time (*not* looking to get political on this issue ) but the difference is that those officers have to give detailed explanations for how that person died. There, presumably, needs to be some sort of evidence to prove that the killing was justified.
For deaths that Oliver is responsible for, there's no follow-up. Oliver isn't giving a detailed statement. So the police, most of the time, I'd assume, won't be able to tell the difference between a guy Oliver shot to save Thea and a guy Oliver just walked in and murdered. I think that's the primary reason for Oliver's "no kill" policy. He went from a guy the police were always looking to catch to a guy that the police were willing to work alongside.
The reason why I give the example of the kidnappers is that he's a guy who was no match for Oliver. Oliver had already beaten him when Oliver killed him. The fight was over. His justification for the murder wasn't the fact that he was a dangerous man - it was that he knew that Oliver could defend himself (and I'm not even sure that was enough for anyone to put two and two together that he was the Green Arrow).
It's the issue I see with any hero killing. Batman killing the Joker is justified to me because he's a psychopath who will end up doing much worse if he's allowed to live. Killer Croc is an even match for Batman, and if Batman needs to put him down to win a fight, then it's fine. It's why I was okay with Superman killing Zod in Man of Steel.
But a low-level thug should be taken care of and incapacitated if no one else is in danger. Otherwise, I think it goes from necessary to excessive. I know that thug could grow up to be a Joker or a Captain Cold or a Lex Luthor, but I don't think that's a decision that Oliver (or Felicity's form) can make in the moment.

Okay, I finally watched Arrow.
I think "not killing" should always be an issue for Oliver, and I don't think he should ever have a policy on it. Should he go around executing criminals like he did in Season One? No. Because I don't think Oliver should be the Punisher - he needs to at least try to be better than the people he's fighting.
But he also shouldn't have a "no killing" rule because it's impractical. Sometimes, he's going to need to use lethal force to save someone. Sometimes, the choice is going to be between taking a life and losing a friend. In battle, those choices are made all the time. I think they went a little too far in the wrong direction (where Oliver is just killing people), but this might end up finally leading to Oliver in the right balance. Because Oliver shouldn't be killing low-level thugs who are no match for him (like the guy who was interrogating him while he was in the chair). But Oliver also shouldn't hesitate to kill people like Darhk who are incredibly dangerous.
We'll see.
I liked his character too. He wants to save the city as mayor, but it's not really practical. Being the Green Arrow is where he can make the most difference. And I liked that he wanted to keep people from getting hurt, but I thought his stubbornness was odd. He had a line where he said he didn't want to use a team unless it was with people like Thea and Laurel....but neither of them were fighters until they were trained. Wild Dog and the other vigilantes are probably more prepared for training than Thea and Laurel ever were.
I did like that he beat up a couple of the thugs/policemen trying kidnap him until he realized the cameras were on him. I also loved seeing some of the more noticeable parts of Vancouver. It's been fun watching shows like that since I visited there last year. I'm still kicking myself for not watching a Flash scene getting filmed when it was right down the street for me (on a night where I had nothing planned.)

Re: American Politics: Discuss and Debate (3,508 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Well, after things were looking pretty good for him for a while, there's virtually no way he wins now. Hillary Clinton will be president. Now I know a lot of people were anti-Trump, and I get that. I don't like him, and I think he'd be a terrible president. But I saw this example on Twitter, and I think it fits. This election is like the end of The Graduate - we as a country have shown up en masse to rush out to the church and tell this woman we love her because the alternative is so terrible. So we do it, we tell her, she comes with us, and we escape on this bus. And, like the characters in the movie, our smiles fade as we realize the decision we just made.
Hillary Clinton will be president.
During this whole campaign, it's all been about Trump. Hillary is supposed to be this policy expert, but I've seen about five different campaign ads for Hillary (I'm in Texas so I bet she has more), and only one was about her at all. When she answers questions, she doesn't answer how she'll do it....she answers how he'll do it worse. When Hillary supporters talk about the election, it's always about him and how horrible he is.
And he is. But that's not the point.
Hillary Clinton will be president.
People talk about Hillary using Obama's words. "The most qualified person to ever run." And that's always bothered me. For all the research that's been done into both candidate's pasts, I don't think any major news source really looked into the quote. People are just accepting it. I looked into it, and it's basically laughable when you dig into it. John Quincy Adams was also a senator just as long as Hillary, was secretary of state for longer, and was also foreign minister several times under different presidents, and was a member of the House. If you want to give Hillary extra years of experience for being the wife to the president, then you have to also give credit to Adams for being the son of one of the creators of the nation.
Martin Van Buren has the same resume as Hillary (minus being Bill Clinton's wife), but he was also Vice President, Governor of New York, Attorney General of New York, and foreign minister to the UK.
Is she more qualified than, say, Obama was? Yes. But she's also about 20 years older than he was. I'd hope she has more experience. In fact, as the second-oldest person to ever be inaugurated, there's almost no reason why she shouldn't have more than 12 years of experience in public office.
What's crazy is that this woman is going to be president, but she really hasn't had to sell herself. All she's had to sell is how bad Trump is. And she's done a good job. But I'll repeat again:
Hillary Clinton will be president.
The same day the Trump tape came out, Hillary's Goldman Sachs speeches were leaked. In some of the speeches, she admitted that she has a "public and private" position on certain issues. She talked about how she's out of touch with the middle class because she's so wealthy. So if you're looking to her to fix any issues related to Wall Street, she won't. In fact, professionally, I'd suggest buying stock in Goldman Sachs if you can afford it. She's going to make them a lot of money.
What about Bill helping fix the economy? While it's true that the economy was great from 1992 to 2000, it has almost nothing to do with anything Bill did. In 1992-2000, something you're using right now rose to public prominence. An entire industry was literally created out of thin air overnight, and the economy boomed because of it. If you want to look at Bill's policies, they actually led to the subprime crisis. So if you're looking for 90s prosperity out of a Clinton White House again, you're not going to get it unless she's able to invent a new internet.
But she's great on foreign policy, right? Well, that's also not quite true. While Trump is an idiot for saying she founded ISIS, a lot of her work as secretary of state certainly didn't make the ISIS situation better. Her key policy weapon in the Middle East seems to be assassination. And that might well work in Syria under a Hillary presidency, but I don't think it fixes the problem there. And the Russians won't like that....but we'll come back to Russia again.
Hillary Clinton is a war hawk. Plain and simple. More than the Bushes, if you listen to certain prominent people. Under Hillary, war will be a weapon she uses quickly and often. She's promised that she won't put any more troops in the middle east, but based on her record, that's almost certainly her "public" position and not her private one. There will be troops in Syria. She wanted to go there while she was secretary of state, and Obama is the one who kept us out. Hillary Clinton will be president, and it'll be her call. We're going.
If you don't believe she's a hawk, read this article. Written by a paper that has been extremely polite to her for a really long time.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/24/magaz … -hawk.html
On ISIS, all she talks about is more of the same. But is more of the same even working? Is Obama making progress in defeating ISIS, and if he's not, how could she possibly make progress with the same strategy?
So what about Russia? We can't elect Trump because he's a friend of Putin. Or a puppet for Putin. Trump will dismantle NATO because that's what Putin wants. We can't elect Trump because Putin wants him.
Here's the bad news. He wants Trump because he hates Hillary. I've read that he's *afraid* of Hillary. Now I've thought about this a lot because it scares me. A scared Putin scares me. Because Putin will be in charge in Russia until he dies. Even if he's removed from power, he'll still be in charge because he's working to make sure one of his lieutenants is in charge.
Hillary wants to remove/kill Assad. Putin is friends with Assad.
If you go to Hillary's website, there's sections on her policies on dozens of issues. If you read them, they're vague one-sentence bullet points that sound great. She's got one on gay rights, on minority rights, on the economy, on ISIS, and a ton of others.
Nothing on Russia.
She's talked a lot about Russian/American relations if Trump is president. Nothing about it if she is. People talk about World War 3 if Trump is president, but they don't want to talk about the very-real Cold War 2 when Hillary is president.
Everyone's thrilled that Trump's finally getting wounded. But when the smoke clears and Hillary is in office, we're all going to be a little like this:

Well, it's like we said a few months ago - we put more thought into it than they did. It's just stupid that they have this shared universe, and they aren't even taking advantage of it.
- Why Joe was an alcoholic - I was thinking maybe Thawne was going to escape and kill Joe's wife. I don't know why he'd do that, but it'd make more sense than the *whatever* reason they gave.
- I thought maybe they were going to go the LOST route where people are "awoken" when Barry interacted with them. If that's the way they did it, it was very unclear.
- Why would Barry still be a forensic scientist in the Flashpoint universe? He studied science to try and clear his dad. And depending on how time travel works, why does he still have his powers? Wouldn't his powers fade, not his memories?
- Doesn't Barry *love* being the Flash?? He seems happy not to have to be the Flash, but why would he want to give that up???
A lot stayed the same (Wally getting powers, Barry keeping his powers, Barry staying at the police force) that shouldn't, and some stuff changed that I don't think should've.
- Was Caitlin recruited by Wells/Thawne? Has she ever mentioned an interest in being a pediatric eye doctor?
- If Cisco had the ability to be a tech billionaire, why wasn't he in the main universe? Did Wells/Thawne hold him back?
- What happened to Harrison Wells?
At the end of the day, they could've had *so much* fun with this. Heck, maybe you start the year with a 3-way crossover, even if you don't want this to be the reason Supergirl joins. Legends is affected because Stein can't be Firestorm with no particle accelerator explosion. Oliver would have to be different. We could've seen Robert Queen as a dark Arrow. Maybe Wally works openly as the Flash for the government or something. They needed to give us something, but they gave us a watered down version of Earth 2. Very watered down.

Well, I thought it was an interesting episode, but I feel like they held back. With four shows on at the same time, I think they really could've had fun with Flashpoint. I think they would've had to have been creative with it, but it could've been cool to have an entire episode of Arrow that took place in the Flashpoint universe (like the entire episodes that took place in the Other Side universe on Fringe or the episodes that took place in the Mirror Universe on DS9/ENT.
I get why they didn't - it's not fair to viewers of Arrow to force them to understand a plotline from Flash. But I think they could've done it a different way. Maybe the last two minutes of Arrow's season finale are used to set it up. Maybe show a bit from the Flash finale and then show Oliver changing into a darker version of himself. I don't think it'd take much explanation.
Maybe they even incorporate the Legends premiere into it. They fix stuff like that, after all. Flashpoint is what sets up the Legion of Doom.
Kara is insulated from the changes, but they could've used Flashpoint to bring her into the universe. Instead, there might be some minor ripples but it's basically already fixed. And even then, I don't think they did that many changes. They even had most of them working as a team by the end of the episode. I don't even feel like the Joe stuff was justified or his "redemption" earned. It felt rushed so that it didn't have to impact the other shows.
I understood why they tried to keep it contained, but I feel like they really missed their chance to do something cool.

Yeah, that's actually the way I saw it. It was easier to say that "action hero Quinn" isn't necessarily the Quinn of Reborn. So it would be unfair to characterize him that way.
However, I feel like my point still stands. I agree with you that Quinn would very-much be interested in repairing his mistake (or doing his best to make it right) as depicted in Reborn. But I also sorta agree with RC_LF that Quinn isn't all altruistic since he's shown to have given up on multiple occasions (World Killer being one of the more notable examples but not the only one by any means).

Re: Personal Status Updates! (759 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Maybe World Killer is the best example to look at.
World Killer Quinn, like Sliders Reborn Quinn, made a massive error and worked tirelessly to fix it. But, at some point, WK Quinn got discouraged and quit. Season 4 (Canon in Sliders, not canon in Sliders Reborn) abandoned the correction of some of his mistakes (saving Earth Prime, rescuing Wade, etc) when he viewed those things to be out of his control.
I think we can say that Quinn is willing to do whatever it takes to fix a problem....presuming that it's a problem he thinks he can fix. If it's a problem that becomes too frustrating, too difficult, or seemingly impossible, I think Quinn does have the capacity in him to quit.
I don't think that analysis helps either of your cases.

If the Pilot takes place seven months before the date it actually aired, is the timeline screwed up with "Into the Mystic?" I don't know if there's ever any mention on how long they were sliding, but the Raiders decided to move to Oakland in June 1995 and the Indians made the world series in October 1995. And, of course, Nicole Brown was murdered June 12, 1994 (months before the slid) so they should've known that anyway.

Re: Personal Status Updates! (759 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
I actually have had this conversation recently with ireactions, but my only issue with monsters is the show's tendency to only feature worlds that seemingly branched off pretty recently. For the most part, almost every world they featured had humans that evolved the same way as on Earth Prime. Language evolved the same way as Earth Prime. People tended to build buildings in the same place looking the same way, and an extraordinary amount of people had sex at the exact same time with the exact same sperm reaching the egg each time.
And it makes sense from a production standpoint. People are easier to film as....people. Sets are more easily redressed than rebuilt.
But when you take a step passed that (and you can when filming restraints no longer apply - like in a book/fanfic/comic), you understand that in a multiverse of infinite worlds, *most* of the worlds the Sliders would land on would feature "monsters." Super-intelligent dinosaurs that evolved freely with no mass extinction would be monsters, but that's almost what happened. Same with dolphins, rats, and any of the other primates.
An astronomer friend of mine told me about theories that alien worlds could have life that derives from thermosynthesis instead of photosynthesis. So, yeah, a world with people who die if exposed to sunlight (vampires) is easily possible if you unhinge the show from the constraints of a show.

Re: Personal Status Updates! (759 replies, posted in Sliders Bboard)
Maybe most of the worlds they encounter aren't violent like that. It could be a subtle point of the reboot, that violence isn't a necessary part of civilization and thus the Sliders don't develop those skills.
I don't have a problem with them handwaving the money stuff. Sliders isn't the kind of show that demands hyper-realism.
Well, I've always wondered why the Sliders didn't bring things with them. They could each carry a backpack (which wouldn't be too heavy or too cumbersome) full of food/supplies/clothes/toiletries/etc. There would be times when they'd have to abandon their supplies because they'd need to escape, but it'd make things so much easier. If they had a few cans of food, some bottled water, some clothes, and some medical supplies (among 4 backpacks), they'd be ready for just about any situation they land on.
Money would be an issue, but it might be easier to slide in the 2000s (with credit cards) than in the 90s (with paper money).
As far as the violence goes, I agree that they wouldn't run into it on most worlds, but it would happen. If they're homeless criminals 24/7 (and let's face it, they would be), they're going to get into issues with law enforcement and people they're trying to scam. And if they did land on a world at war, they'd have to participate just to survive.
Real-life sliding would almost have to be drastically different than the way it was shown on the show, but even in a 90s sci-fi series, I think they'd be hardened by the experience. Maybe not elite soldiers, but they'd acquire military-like skills for sure.

The Sliders shouldn't be "charging into battle" at all. They're not soldiers. They need to find ways to defeat their enemies indirectly. Use their scientific knowledge to undermine the monsters' power or protect people from them. That's what Quinn and company did in the first two seasons. They didn't confront the California Health Commission in "Fever", they found a way to diminish its power. In "The Good, the Bad, and the Wealthy" Quinn did everything he could to avoid direct confrontation. That's the Sliders ethos for the first two seasons.
I don't disagree with anything in this, but wouldn't an extended amount of time sliding eventually "soldierize" anyone? Not only would they end up getting involved in actual conflicts (which happened as early as the Pilot), but they'd be acquiring soldier-like skills on a daily basis. They're effectively homeless hobos traveling from "town" to "town" having to scrape enough of a living, but their journey could also be that of a squadron of soldiers who have to get from point A to point B in enemy territory. Quinn could be anti-conflict, but he'd be eventually forced to at some point. He'd probably eventually have to use a weapon. He'd probably eventually have to kill someone. And then again.
Because it was a 90s show, not much really carried on from week to week, but a sliders reboot now would have to show the physical and mental toll that sliding would take. They'd have no money and no permanent shelter, and they'd have to be very quick on their feet to get by. They'd either have to be criminals (Rembrandt stealing from his double) or con men (falsifying or stealing an identity) just to make ends meet.
I don't particularly like any version of sliders where they end up as Navy SEALs, able to take out an army of mercenaries with ease (see The Walking Dead), but they'd definitely become more like an Army the longer they slid.

Even if they're leaving Kara in her own Earth, I don't know why they don't move her to a different city. National City doesn't provide them anything interesting, and it'd explain why certain people (like Cat) aren't always there. They could move Kara to, say, Coast City and keep her there if anything ever happens to move her to the Arrowverse.

In this limited scope, there's not a huge difference in the look of season 2 vs season 1.

I think we could get a kickstarter going and then hire a production studio to make it. I don't know if people would be willing to pay for it, but it'd definitely be an interesting documentary, and I bet you could get most of the key players (except for RIP Peckinpah) to participate.
